    Inverness CT U20s 3 – 1 Motherwell U20s

Motherwell’s Under 20’s couldn’t emulate last week’s comeback and sunk to a 3-1 defeat in Inverness this afternoon.

The young Steelmen were dealt and early blow when midfield terrier Alan Campbell was on the receiving end of a Nat Wedderburn flailing elbow, forcing him off to be replaced by Ross MacLean.

Inverness arguably edged the opening exchanges and had the first chance of the game when Sutherland clipped the ball over the ‘Well defence to Wilson but with Jack McMillan in attendance, could only tamely shoot at Long.

Stephen Craigan’s side were bolstered by the addition of Dom Thomas and he looked lively, creating Motherwell’s two best chances of the half but just couldn’t find the final touch to give his side the vital lead.

It was a game of few chances until Howarth fired in a warning shot from MacRea’s lay-off, but could only find the side-netting from 18 yards.

The drab opening forty minutes at a rain-sodden Grant Street Park then took a turn for the worst when Inverness took the lead.

Howarth curled in an inviting cross to the back post, which was nodded back across goal by Sutherland. It was probably heading in but Wilson took no chances and headed into the empty net with Long beaten.

As the half-time whistle approached Caley struck again. The ‘Well defence was carved open all too easily by MacRea and MacArthur and this allowed Sutherland to pick his spot and place it beyond the despairing dive of Long.

At 2-0 down Motherwell would need to come out in the second half and show the kind of spirit that has helped them comeback in five games this season and within a minute of the restart, they had stated their intentions.

Thomas received the ball from kick-off, drove forward and slid in MacLean whose shot beat MacKay but was superbly read by Horner and put out for a corner.

From that corner MacKay was again called into action, this time from a Dylan Mackin header which he took no chances with and palmed over the bar.

After being in complete control of the opening ten minutes of the second half, you could sense a goal coming and sure enough it arrived, through unfortunate circumstances from Inverness’ point of view.

Cadden and Thomas had pressed Howarth and Gilchrist high up the park with the latter slicing his attempted clearance straight into the path of Mackin who in a similar fashion to his first goal last week, slid in through the goalie’s legs.

This seemed to trigger a belief in the players and an equaliser seemed inevitable with wave after wave of attack. The best chance fell to Hastie whose shot on the turn looked like it was going in but MacKay reacted well and got down to his right to make the stop.

Just as hopes of an equaliser were being raised, Caley killed the game with a decisive third.

A long ball forward was chased down by MacRea who darted past Maguire and produced a fine finish past Long to make restore the Highlander’s two goal advantage and knock the stuffing out Motherwell.

‘Well had a chance for a late consolation turned away when Hastie’s cross was seemingly knocked out by the hand of MacArthur, but referee and assistant couldn’t be sure, with the Caley man unconvincingly going down holding his face, and awarded a corner.

Motherwell: Long, Watt, Hall, Maguire, McMillan, Livingstone (Hastie), Thomas, Campbell (MacLean), Cadden, Mackin, Leitch (Falconer)

    Subs not used: Morrison, Turnbull

    Goals: Mackin

McGhee praises ‘Well after Dons draw

Mark McGhee praised his Motherwell side after they came back from behind to earn a deserved point at Pittodrie.

After enjoying large spells on top during the first forty-five, the Steelmen somehow found themselves behind in controversial circumstances when Crawford Allan adjudged Stephen Pearson to have fouled Shay Logan on the edge of the area.

To rub salt into the wounds, Adam Rooney headed home the subsequent free-kick.

However, ‘Well pulled themselves level on the 73rd minute with an almost identical goal, when sub Lionel Ainsworth crossed it for Scott McDonald who bulleted a header past Danny Ward.

Ward went on to make four terrific late stops to deny ‘Well what would have been an excellent win, but McGhee was happy with his players after their first-half set-back.

[pullquote]They answered a lot of questions for me today. We play Kilmanock next week, and we have to see the same sort of desire for that.[/pullquote]

“The question I asked at half-time was whether they had the character and desire to come back against Aberdeen and take something from the game,” McGhee said.

“I actually wrote on the board Yes and No, and let’s see what the answer is when we come in. That was the team talk.

“When we came in at the end of the game, it was a yes. They answered a lot of questions for me today. We play Kilmanock next week, and we have to see the same sort of desire for that.”

“Overall I was delighted with the performance, but disappointed with the nature of their goal. We didn’t feel it was a free-kick, and in actual fact Adam Rooney was offside. It was a double whammy.”

    Aberdeen 1 – 1 Motherwell

    [tab:Match report]

     Gavin McCafferty at Pittodrie

Motherwell turned in one of their most impressive performances of the season, but were held to a 1-1 draw at Pittodrie.

The Steelmen were the better side in the opening forty-five, but were somehow behind a minute before the interval when Adam Rooney headed home a disputed free-kick from the right flank.

The Dons were edging the second half but Scott McDonald brought his side level with an almost identical goal with seventeen minutes left on the clock.

The Steelmen went on to shade the closing stages, and only a multitude of terrific saves from Danny Ward stopped Mark McGhee’s side from picking up all three points.

The Claret and Amber men showed just once change from the side that lost to Celtic seven days previous, with skipper Keith Lasley reinstalled to the side, Louis Laing taking his place.

The visitors would have the better of the first 45 minutes, and there was an early taste of things to come.

Just four minutes in another of the quartet, Shay Logan, had to be alert in challenging Louis Moult on the edge of the six-yard box, after he had been played in by Marvin Johnson.

Johnson was having an excellent game on the right wing, and he was involved again, combining with Josh Law when Lasley sent an 18-yard snapshot wide of target.

Midway through the first half, it was another move down that side that saw Logan, tucking in again to cover his centre-backs, time his challenge perfectly to deny Wes Fletcher.

But ten minutes from the interval everything started to come together for the hosts.

A swift counter-attack saw Hayes and McGinn exchange passes, before the former sent his angled drive high and wide.

It was a warning not heeded by the visitors, and when Stephen Pearson gave away an extremely soft free-kick after 42 minutes, the home side took the lead.

Hayes and McGinn stood over the ball, and it was the latter who swung over a sweet cross. The defence and goalkeeper hesitated as the ball flew in – but Rooney, who may have been flagged off, rose well to nod in off the far post.

It was a hugely cruel blow for the Fir Parkers, who somehow found themselves behind at the break.

To make matters worse, the experienced Lasley was forced off with an calf injury, to be replaced by Lionel Ainsworth. ‘Well could have found themselves further behind just moments later as McGinn worked an opening to cross for Rooney – but his header was just over the bar.

Motherwell had another narrow escape just before the hour mark as Hayes and Rooney combined, the striker feeding McGinn whose miscue was almost turned in by Peter Pawlett, only for the ball to dribble wide of the target.

Aberdeen did have the ball in the net again when Mark Reynolds turned home a free-kick from close range, but his effort was ruled out by an offside call from the assistant referee, Kylie McMullan.

Motherwell were quickly on the attack themselves, sensing a leveller and Ward had to look smart to hold a stinging drive from sub Theo Robinson, who had replaced Louis Moult.

The home side were dealt an injury blow of their own when Ash Taylor was forced off with a back injury he picked up in attempting a clearance. Fir Fir Park skipper Paul Quinn took his place.

And Motherwell would find themselves deservedly level with 73 minutes gone.

Reynolds gave away afree-kick challenging for an aerial ball with McDonald, and in what was almost a carbon copy of the first half Aberdeen goal, the little Aussie hitman ghosted in at the back post to head home Ainsworth’s cross.

With five minutes remaining, Motherwell’s goalkeeper, Connor Ripley, had to be at his best to push a Logan header over after excellent work by his fellow full-back, Graeme Shinnie.

However and at the other end Ward performed similar heroics to keep his side in the match. He twice saved from Ainsworth, one an incredible block after taking a deflection, a point-blank from Robinson after McDonald had teed up the Jamaican International inside the area and blocked Johnson’s rising shot. Robinson also had a later header drop just wide.

The game finished with the Steelmen earning a share of the spoils. It was a drastically improved showing from McGhee’s side who will again challenge his players to up again when they visit on-form Kilmarnock next Saturday.

    [tab:Reaction]

    Motherwell  manager Mark McGhee:

“I don’t know if we should have won but we could of won. Connor Ripley also made a great save to make sure we didn’t lose the game so that balances up.

“We feel the goal was a soft free kick from a dangerous area but we also felt Adam Rooney never came back onside so the goal he scores is in essence offside and we felt very aggrieved at half time.

“But the players answered another question from me in terms of having the desire to come back and get something against Aberdeen so I was delighted.

“Now they have set their standards they must reproduced that against Kilmarnock next week.

“They must put in the same sort of determination and skill to get something out of that game as it’s easier to do that at places like Aberdeen.

“If you don’t do that against Celtic and Aberdeen then you know you are going to get gubbed so we must raise our game in every match.

“The substitutes played their part when they came on and the good thing is I now feel I could perm any eleven from the 14 who took part today.”

    Aberdeen manager Derek McInnes:

“We passed up a couple of chances to win the game which maybe we wouldn’t a few weeks ago but I thought we were the far better team until they scored.

“It was much more like us but Danny pulled off a few good saves near the end so maybe a draw was fair but that was much more like us.

“Losing a goal from a set play was disappointing and it was a cheap goal for us to lose and not getting a second goal came back to bite us.”

Join The Well Society for a Fiver

Several months ago we carried out a survey asking hundreds of fans if they would be willing to join the society. The overwhelming majority of respondents said yes, but could not afford the joining fees at that time.

So, to make it easier to join we abandoned the joining fee requirement, replacing it with a monthly pledge of at least £10 per month.

Over the past few months we have followed-up a substantial number of respondents from the fan survey by telephone to ask them to join, receiving yet again very positive responses in terms of willingness. Unfortunately, however, we have received several similar responses in terms of affordability of £10 per month.

As a result, therefore, we are offering the option of pledging £5 per month by Direct Debit, allowing fans who cannot afford the higher levels to join the Society. That equates to just over £1 per week.

Click here to join the Well Society for just £5 per month!
