    Motherwell 0 – 1 Hibernian

    [tab:Match report]

    Phil McGhee at Fir Park

A heroic and exhausting week for Motherwell finally took its toll, as a first half goal from Martin Boyle was enough to earn Hibs three points from what was a rather uninspiring game.

With too many players in claret and amber having an off day at Fir Park, ‘Well failed to respond after a poor first half.

And even the introduction of three substitutes early in the second half, a change of shape and a more positive second 45 minutes, failed to give ‘Well a route back in to the encounter as both ‘keepers enjoyed a quiet afternoon.

Elliot Frear kept his spot in the team to take up his wide left berth but he and his teammates failed to a make an impression in a first half where ‘Well toiled to match a determined Hibs.

Similar to their opening 30 minutes in the cup semi final, Motherwell looked sluggish and intent on playing a long ball and too easily conceding possession to the opposition.

There was an early warning after 19 minutes when Boyle was allowed to break down the right but his powerful angled drive found Trevor Carson standing strong to chest the ball behind.

However, unlike the previous week, Motherwell’s opponents made the most of their advantage, taking the lead after 27 minutes.

Marvin Bartley’s hopeful ball towards the ‘Well goal caught out Cédric Kipré, allowing Boyle to nip in behind him, round the advancing Carson before rolling the ball into the net for the lead.

With John McGinn dominating the middle of the park, Neil Lennon’s men looked the more likely to add to their score and a burst from the Hibs’ midfield man ended with a 20-yard shot straight at Carson.

Towards the end of a scrappy half, the Fir Park side almost nicked an equaliser. Ryan Bowman and Carl McHugh combined at the edge of the box to set up Allan Campbell but his effort from 20-yards curled just outside the post.

It was anticipated that the ‘Well players would once again raise their game for the second half and Stephen Robinson made his intentions clear with a double substitution, bringing on Gaël Bigirimana and Craig Tanner, in an attempt to control the middle of the park.

And within five minutes, Bigirimana forced the first save from Ofir Marciano, but his 25-yard drive was comfortably held by the Hibs’ ‘keeper.

That aside, though, the Edinburgh side were sitting comfortably on their lead. In a further attempt to change the pattern of play, Deimantas Petravičius came on to make hIs first team debut, with the Lithuanian striker given over 30 minutes to make an impression.

Almost immediately, an in swinging free kick from Tanner just evaded the heads of Petravičius and Peter Hartley inside the six yard box. For a short spell, ‘Well then put some pressure on the visitor’s goal.

The Lithuanian internationalist came within a foot of the equaliser. Bigirimana’s terrific pass released Chris Cadden wide on the right and when his low ball across the face of goal found Petravičius he seemed certain to claim his first goal until his shot was blocked on the line by Steven Whittaker.

Charles Dunne did have the ball in the net but Hartley’s touch played the defender offside.

As the game entered the last 15 minutes there was a lot more urgency to ‘Well’s play. And with three strikers on the pitch they looked more threatening but ultimately lacked that decisive edge and the Steelmen slumped to only their fourth defeat of the season.

    Lasley signs contract extension

Motherwell FC is today delighted to announce that assistant manager Keith Lasley has signed a contract extension with the club.

Lasley, whose deal was set to expire at the end of the season, has now penned a deal to keep him at Fir Park until 2020.

The contract means the ex-skipper has now committed his future to the club for the same period as ‘Well boss Stephen Robinson.

Together, the duo have steered the club to a first League Cup final since 2005, as well as picking up an impressive 19 points in the first ten games of the season.

And Lasley, who hung up his boots in the summer, will be set to extend his stay at Fir Park to a total of 19-years following his impeccable commitment to the club as a player and now as assistant.

[pullquote]”I’m loving every minute of it and I’m just determined to continue to work hard for the manager and for the club.[/pullquote]

The 38-year-old admitted he is “loving every minute” in his role and that he didn’t have to think twice about penning an extension.

“Once it was offered to me it didn’t take too much thinking about. It’s been a fantastic start for myself in the role and a lot of hard-work too, which will continue to be the case.” Lasley revealed.

“But I’m loving every minute of it and I’m just determined to continue to work hard for the manager and for the club.

“I probably didn’t imagine that things would start as well as this but you always work towards that. Our mantra since the summer has been trying to raise expectations of the players themselves, first individually then you hope that transcends on to the group as a whole and the club.”

He added: “When I first got in to the job I was just wanting to get the head down and get on with things, particularly since it was my first role in this side of the game. But as I’ve said before it’s something I’ve always planned for, something I’ve always felt as if I had a decent skill set to go in to – but it’s not until you land in the job that you realise there’s a lot of hard-work, a lot of hours and a lot of dedication.

“But I’m up for it and I’m ready for that and, in particular, I’m enjoying it.”

    Build-up: Hibernian

The Steelmen head in to their third game in the space of a week as they prepare for the visit of Hibs tomorrow afternoon.

And following a strong run of form, Stephen Robinson’s side are in the midst of a four game winning streak after notching an important 1-0 win over Dundee on Wednesday night.

Three points now separate ‘Well from tomorrow’s visitors Hibernian, who also picked up a 1-0 win midweek heading in to their eleventh Premiership fixture of the campaign.

Neil Lennon’s side will be keen to maintain their fine run of form away from home, having gone undefeated on the road since March in league football.

And with a number options at his disposal following some impressive performances on Wednesday night, Robinson admitted he may have a selection headache on his hands.

He said: “There’s a confidence about the place and going in to games [the boys] don’t fear anybody and they obviously go in looking forward to games.

“When you’re winning that’s easy, you don’t feel tired and you just want another game to come as soon as possible.”

He added: “There’s not a lot of difference, there’s fine margins between the teams that I’m picking and at this moment in time we’ve won a lot of games, so it’s difficult to give those boys a lot of opportunities.”

[pullquote]I said to them that they could come back here and have a beer if they wanted to… but they said no. They wanted to show their face, acknowledge the crowd and get home to prepare for Dundee.[/pullquote]

Gaël Bigirimana and Alex Fisher came in to the fold and impressed, working tirelessly as the ‘Well held on to a fifth clean sheet in eight games.

Craig Tanner made the difference as his fifth minute finish proved the difference on a night when the Steelmen largely dominated proceedings at Den’s Park.

But one man who particularly impressed was Elliott Frear, the flying winger who returned to the starting eleven following a frustrating period on the sidelines with injury.

The Englishman completed 90 minutes and received a number of plaudits on a night when the Fir Park men looked particularly threatening down the left flank.

And the 27-year-old hopes to have put his injury concerns well and truly behind him as he prepares for tomorrow’s clash with the Hibees.

He said: “The boys are delighted and there’s a really good feeling around the football club at the moment. Everyone’s pulling together and winning football matches which is great.” He said.

[pullquote]We keep speaking about our togetherness and it’s not a lie, you can see that on the pitch and it does help when you win games obviously but we just want to carry that on now for the next few games.[/pullquote]

“We keep speaking about our togetherness and it’s not a lie, you can see that on the pitch and it does help when you win games obviously but we just want to carry that on now for the next few games.

“We’re in a very good position in the league at the moment. We’ve got three important games before the cup final for everyone to try and get a place in the starting eleven on that Sunday – but like I said we’re not getting ahead of ourselves and we’ll have a game plan for Saturday which hopefully we can carry out.”

Stephen Robinson will have a near full strength side to pick from as his team host the Edinburgh outfit for the first time since 2013 – with George Newell still on the mend from an injury lay-off.

    Frear: Our togetherness is clear

Elliott Frear put his injury woes behind him with a tireless 90-minute performance against Dundee on Wednesday night.

And the winger turned his attentions to Saturday’s clash with Hibs as he spoke to the broadcast press this morning, admitting there is a “really good feeling” around the football club.

The Englishman reflected on his frustrating injury lay-off and revealed the togetherness among the Fir Park dressing room.
