    Build-up: Ross County

Motherwell head north to face Ross County in the Ladbrokes Premiership tomorrow afternoon.

And following last weekend’s loss against Hibs, the Steelmen are set for a showdown with Owen Coyle’s County at the Global Energy Stadium as they search for a return to winning ways.

Eight points separate the Northerners in 9th from the ‘Well in 5th as the two sides meet for the third time this season.

On both occasions, the Fir Parkers have emerged victorious.

The first meeting was in the Betfred Cup, when the ten-men of Motherwell managed to bag an extra-time winner to progress to the quarter-final.

Ten-days later, the Staggies travelled south to Fir Park, where the Steelmen notched their first league victory of the season and the first in a five game unbeaten run.

Richard Tait’s opener was followed up by Louis Moult’s penalty to secure a 2-0 victory thanks to a much-improved second half.

Much like the previous two fixtures against the Northerners, Stephen Robinson’s side head in to the clash on the back of defeat.

But Stephen Robinson is confident his side can bounce back to winning ways this weekend.

Speaking to the press this morning, the Northern Irishman said: “We’ve started well but on Saturday we stopped the things we’re very good at.

[pullquote]We’ve trained hard this week, and we’ve had three, four good days of training so I’m confident we’ll be back on Saturday.[/pullquote]

“We didn’t deliver enough balls in to the box to create opportunities, which was very evident, so we’ll get back to doing that again.”

He added: “We’ve trained hard this week, and we’ve had three, four good days of training so I’m confident we’ll be back on Saturday.”

And one player who also has his sights set on bouncing back from Saturday’s defeat is Craig Tanner.

The 23-year-old, who scored the winning goal against Dundee, revealed that everyone thrives under the competition in the squad.

Speaking to the broadcast press this morning, the Englishman looked ahead to tomorrows trip to the highlands.

“It’s part of my game to create and score goals so thankfully I was fortunate enough to put one in the corner against Dundee and hopefully I can add a few more to help the team throughout the season.” The creative attacker said.

“When you have a squad like we have here and everyone’s pushing in the same direction, I think you can’t always expect to start.”

He added: “There’s a lot of games and the manager changes it due to tactical decisions or fitness and I think it’s working throughout the season because the lads who play give their all.”

The Fir Parkers will need to be at their best this weekend, as they travel to the Global Energy Stadium to take on a County side who have recently picked up their first home league win of the campaign.

The Staggies will be keen to follow that up tomorrow, but face a ‘Well side brimming with confidence and fuelled by the hunger to return to winning ways.

    Robinson: Confident we’ll bounce back

‘Well boss Stephen Robinson is confident his side will bounce back as the Steelmen head north to take on Ross County.

The Fir Park manager looked ahead to tomorrow’s clash with Owen Coyle’s County and admitted he expects an improvement from the weekend’s defeat against Hibs.

Speaking to the broadcast press this morning, Robinson also discussed his one-match ban following yesterday’s hearing at Hampden.

[pullquote]We’ve trained hard this week, and we’ve had three, four good days of training so I’m confident we’ll be back on Saturday.[/pullquote]

He said: “We’ve started well but on Saturday we stopped the things we’re very good at.

    Tanner: Competition drives us

Craig Tanner has his sights set on scoring and creating more goals for the Steelmen as the club prepare to take on Ross County.

The 23-year-old, who scored the winning goal against Dundee, revealed that everyone thrives under the competition in the squad.

Speaking to the broadcast press this morning, the Englishman looked ahead to tomorrows trip to the highlands.

    Robinson issued one match ban

Manager Stephen Robinson has been banned for one match after admitting a Scottish FA charge of misconduct.

The ban is effective immediately, meaning he will be in the stands for this weekend’s Scottish Premiership match at Ross County.

He will therefore be free to lead the team as normal at the Betfred Cup final with Celtic later this month.

[pullquote]I respect and accept the judgment of the panel. We can now draw a line under this and move on.[/pullquote]

The manager has also received an additional suspended one match ban, which will come in to effect if he breaches the rule again before the end of the season.

Robinson said: “I attended Hampden this morning and I received a fair hearing. I respect and accept the judgment of the panel. We can now draw a line under this and move on.”

The manager admitted breaching rule 203 during the Betfred Cup semi final victory against Rangers, which states “no member of Team Staff shall commit misconduct at a match.”

Anderson in charge for County clash

Referee for the Steelmen’s trip to Dingwall to face Ross County is Euan Anderson.

Anderson, 34, will be handling his first Motherwell match of the season as Stephen Robinson’s men aim to bounce back from the 1-0 loss against Hibs.

The official took charge of three ‘Well matches last term, including the 1-0 loss away to Aberdeen in March, the 2-1 loss against St Johnstone at Fir Park back in August and the dramatic Lanarkshire derby draw on Hogmanay.

A solitary, late strike from Niall McGinn was enough to snatch all three points for Derek McInnes’ men at Pittodrie in the last ‘Well outing for Euan Anderson.

Prior to that, a last minute Louis Moult header snatched a point for the ten-man Fir Parkers at the SuperSeal stadium.

A goal from Chris Cadden gave the Steelmen the lead in Anderson’s first ‘Well fixture of the 2016/17 campaign, but just after half time St Johnstone responded through Danny Swanson to draw level before Steven McLean snatched the win with 15 minutes remaining.

The Dumbarton-based whistler was promoted to category one in the summer of 2011 and has taken charge of a number of Motherwell matches in the past, his first coming in the Scottish Cup fourth round defeat to Albion Rovers at New Douglas Park on November 2013 where a first goal of the season for Albion’s Gary Phillips ensured the Coatbridge outfit’s qualification to the next round of the cup.

He was also in charge of Motherwell’s 2-1 win away to Kilmarnock in 2014/15 season where goals from Stephen Pearson and Lee Erwin secured three points for Well’ on this occasion with an Anthony Straker own-goal being the only blotch to the copybook on that day.

The win was part of a three match win streak that Well’ put together on the backend of the 14/15 season, commencing with a 4-0 victory over Hamilton and a 5-0 victory over St Mirren to bookend the Kilmarnock fixture.

Euan will be assisted by Douglas Ross and David Doig, with Kevin Graham on fourth official duties.

    Craigan: We lacked composure

Under-20s boss Stephen Craigan admitted his side were lacking composure as they drew 0-0 with St Johnstone in the Development League.

Following Sunday’s 9-0 victory in the Scottish Youth Cup, the Northern Irishman admitted his players looked a bit tired and didn’t hit their usual standards.

Speaking to MFC TV at full time, Craigan reflected on his side’s draw with the Saints.

[pullquote]We didn’t get about the pitch the way we’d like to, we didn’t pass the ball the way we’d like to and we lacked composure.[/pullquote]

He said: “I don’t stand here very often and be critical of my players but I just thought that tonight the younger St Johnstone side wanted it more.

“And I think in the end they probably deserved to win the game. They had a couple of chances near the end and I don’t think we were much of a threat – Deimantas had a chance in the first half with a header but apart from that we never really threatened the game.”

He added: “We didn’t get about the pitch the way we’d like to, we didn’t pass the ball the way we’d like to and we lacked composure.”

    Motherwell U20s 0 – 0 St Johnstone U20s

Motherwell’s Under 20s failed to notch three points for just the third time this season.

The Fir Parkers drew 0-0 with St Johnstone on a chilly November night at Forthbank Stadium in Stirling, just three days after bagging nine goals in the Scottish Youth Cup.

Stephen Craigan named five changes to his starting eleven, replacing Shaun Bowers, Kyle MacDonald, Dylan Falconer, James Scott and Alfie Agyeman with Liam Grimshaw, Stevie Hammell, Ross MacLean, Alex Fisher and Deimantas Petravičius.

The visitors enjoyed the brighter start, going close inside the first minute of the game when Denny Johnstone’s header flashed narrowly wide of Peter Morrison’s goal.

Six minutes later, Saints threatened again as Craigan’s youngsters struggled to find a foothold in the game.

A whipped corner kick was flicked crucially away from danger by Barry Maguire, but, after a rocky start, the Steelmen eventually grew into the game after 15 minutes or so.

Liam Grimshaw and Ross MacLean linked up neatly down the right flank, with the former’s first time ball allowing the latter to send in a terrific cross, which Petravičius headed narrowly over the crossbar.

Ten minutes later, the Steelmen had the ball in the back of the net – only to be denied by the linesman’s flag.

Again, Grimshaw worked the ball neatly down the right, twisting beyond his man before sending a fizzing ball in to the feet of Fisher, who did well to take a touch and finish beyond MacKenzie, before having any form of celebration cut short.

Stephen Craigan was forced in to an early substitution five minutes from half time, when Liam Brown went down following a collision and limped off the park to be replaced by Shaun Bowers.

Much like in the first half, St Johnstone started the second period brightly and nearly took the lead.

A low cross found Sean Struthers just inside the box, who sent a low effort narrowly wide of the far post.

MacLean worked himself some space on the left flank, affording the youngster a yard to send in a pinpoint cross, but it narrowly evaded Petravičius in the box.

Davie Turnbull went closest to finding the breakthrough when his strike from 20 yards was tipped brilliantly over the bar by MacKenzie, resulting in a corner for the ‘Well.

From the following set piece, Hammell’s pin-point delivery was nodded on to the bar by Fisher as Craigan’s side started to gain some momentum in the Development League clash.

In the 73rd minute though, Motherwell should have taken the lead.

Bowers burst positively beyond his marker in the box before cutting back for Petravičius, but the Lithuanin struck his effort off target from ten yards.

Two minutes later, the duo linked up again. This time it was the substitute who got on the end of the forward’s cross. Unfortunately though, Bowers’ header flashed narrowly wide of the target.

With just five minutes remaining, the visitors should have snatched the lead when a glorious opportunity fell at the feet of Kyle McClean. But from six yards and with just Morrison to beat, the midfielder miscued his effort past the post and the Steelmen were spared.
