    Build up: Aberdeen

Motherwell return to Premiership action following the international break, with Aberdeen awaiting the Steelmen at Pittodrie on Saturday afternoon.

It is a welcome return to domestic football for Stephen Robinson and his squad, who are searching for a return to winning ways in the final game before the club’s trip to Hampden for the Betfred Cup final against Celtic.

And in Derek McInnes’ second-placed Aberdeen, there are not many tougher games awaiting the Fir Parkers in the coming weeks.

Whilst this is the third meeting with the Dons, it is the first trip to the Granite City in the 2017/18 campaign and it falls just a week before a triple header with Celtic.

But for Robinson, all the attention is on Aberdeen.

“Next week will take care of itself, we’re very much focused on Aberdeen,” the Northern Irishman said.

“We’ve had two good games against them and we’re one of only two teams to beat them domestically this season, so it’s going to be a tough game but it’s one that we’re very much looking forward to.

“Training has been very, very good and I think that’s the intensity of training and the environment we’ve created from day one.”

He added: “We’ve lost two league games, so we want to get back to winning ways now and hopefully that starts on Saturday.”

Robinson will have a full strength squad to pick from, which will inevitably bring about a selection headache for the ‘Well boss.

And in his group of players, Robinson has a squad who are full of belief, fight and togetherness.

Richard Tait insists the Fir Parkers are intent on returning to Lanarkshire tomorrow night with three points.

“It’s a big match for us,” the defender admitted. “We did well against them in the cup earlier this season then we played them a couple of days later and got beat.

“I think we can go up there full of confidence knowing that we’re good enough to get a result, so that will be the aim – to go there and pick up some points.”

He added: “In and around the town everyone is excited for next week but inside the football club everyone is concentrated on this game.”

Aberdeen, who come into this clash in second place, will be equally hungry to pick up three points having won just once in their last three games.

Derek McInnes will be without captain Graeme Shinnie, who is out through suspension.

    Phil O’Donnell cup final tribute

Members of Phil O’Donnell’s family have been invited to attend the Betfred Cup final on November 26 at Hampden as guests of the SPFL, Motherwell and Celtic.

Phil, who represented both clubs during his playing career, sadly passed away due to heart failure at the age of 35 in December 2007.  Phil’s youngest son Luc, 14, will also parade the trophy to both sets of supporters and place it on the tunnel plinth directly before both teams take to the pitch, a key role in the day’s proceedings.

An article in the match day programme will also pay tribute to Phil, as well as raise awareness of the work carried out by the charity Cardiac Risk in the Young (CRY).

The O’Donnell family are strong supporters of CRY, who offer bereavement support to families affected by young sudden cardiac death and offer cardiac screening for young people aged 14-35 to try to prevent such tragedies. CRY also supports young people diagnosed with potentially life-threatening cardiac conditions.

Phil’s daughter Megan said: “I would like to take this opportunity to thank the SPFL and both clubs for inviting my family to the Betfred Cup final.

“It is so heartwarming to see my dad honoured in such a special way, especially as my youngest brother, Luc, will be presenting the trophy to the fans on the day.

“Luc has little memory of my dad but I’m sure next Sunday will stay with him forever. It will be so nice for him to witness first-hand the extent to which my dad was liked by everyone.

“Unfortunately I won’t be present as I’m currently living in Australia, but I will be watching the game in Sydney at 2am. I brought one of my dad’s football strips away with me as a good luck charm and I’m delighted I’m getting this opportunity to wear it with pride.”

Motherwell’s Chief Operating Officer Alan Burrows added: “We are always eager to remember and honour Phil O’Donnell, a fantastic captain, role model and man, at any opportunity and it’s fitting that ten years after his untimely and tragic passing, two of his former clubs meet in the Betfred Cup final.

“As a club, we are fortunate to have enjoyed Phil’s company and talent on two separate spells and his memory and legacy is all around us at Fir Park, each and every day.

“We are delighted members of Phil’s family will be there to watch the game and are obviously excited and keen to play in what hopefully be a memorable and poignant occasion for everyone.”

Celtic Chief Executive Peter Lawwell commented: “It is very fitting that the League Cup final will honour and remember Phil –  such a special man, who gave so much to both Celtic and Motherwell.

“Phil was taken from us far too early – but in his life he made such a great contribution to football and more importantly to his family as both a father and a husband.

“We are sure the Betfred Cup final will be a great occasion. We are delighted to be taking part and we look forward to working with Motherwell and the SPFL to ensure that the match is the fitting tribute to Phil, which he richly deserves.”

SPFL Chief Executive Neil Doncaster said: “It seems fitting that, as we approach the tenth anniversary of Phil’s untimely death, two of the clubs he represented with such distinction should meet in the Betfred Cup final.

“We are pleased that Phil’s family will attend Hampden for the match, and that one of his children will play a role in the pre-match proceedings.”

    Robinson: Hungry to bounce back

‘Well boss Stephen Robinson turned his attentions back to domestic football following the international break.

And the Northern Irishman, who has not allowed his mind to wander ahead to next week’s Betfred Cup Final, looked ahead to his side’s trip to Pittodrie.

Speaking to the broadcast press, Robinson insisted his side are determined to get back to winning ways.

[pullquote]We’re one of only two teams to beat them domestically this season, so it’s going to be a tough game but it’s one that we’re very much looking forward to.[/pullquote]

    Tait: Focused on Dons trip

‘Well defender Richard Tait has his mind fully focused on Aberdeen as the Steelmen head in to a crucial run of games.

The wing-back admitted that whilst the media and fans turn their attentions to the Betfred Cup Final in just over a week’s time, the Motherwell dressing room have their sights set on Saturday trip to Pittodrie.

Speaking to the broadcast press this morning, Tait looked ahead to the trip north this weekend.

[pullquote]I think we can go up there full of confidence knowing that we’re good enough to get a result, so that will be the aim – to go there and pick up some points.[/pullquote]

“It’s a big match for us,” the defender admitted. “We did well against them in the cup earlier this season then we played them a couple of days later and got beat.

    Motherwell accepted into Project Brave

Motherwell FC has been accepted into the elite level of the Scottish FA’s new youth development programme Project Brave.

The governing body has announced the confirmation of club placings in the new academy structure, which they state is designed to improve the overall standard of young Scottish footballers.

Motherwell will be joined at elite level by Aberdeen, Celtic, Hamilton Academical, Hearts, Hibernian, Kilmarnock and Rangers. Games under the new structure, which is for age groups up to under 18s, will begin from the start of the 2018/19 season.

Clubs have been split into three categories: elite, progressive and performance. The ‘progressive’ category will include clubs with aspirations to play at elite level who do not currently meet the criteria.

Motherwell will face their fellow ‘elite’ clubs three times across the course of a season and will also play one game against each ‘progressive’ academy. The club will continue to receive a fixed block grant from the Scottish FA each year for operating an ‘elite’ academy.

Motherwell’s Chief Operating Officer Alan Burrows said: “We are obviously delighted to be awarded elite status, particularly as the staff at the club have put in a significant amount work over the last six months to ensure we achieved our goal.

“Motherwell is a club which has a reputation throughout its existence for producing and developing young players who later become future internationals. You think of Gary McAllister and Phil O’Donnell. You think of Lee McCulloch and Steven Hammell. James McFadden and Stephen Pearson. And that’s just the recent ones.

“Now, as the only fully fan-owned club in the Scottish Premiership, and in Project Brave, having that pathway which culminates in effective player trading is a cornerstone of our strategy and model.

“So despite our fairly public reservations, we had no other option or choice but to strive to be at the elite level, alongside the seven other clubs named today. What it means for us in real terms is a significant financial outlay in terms of the staff and infrastructure at the academy, but that’s part of our commitment to youth football and the production of good young players.

“It’s our job as a club to ensure we can meet those obligations whilst still trying to be competitive as a club, both on and off the park.

“We currently have academy talent representing every single youth side Scotland has from schoolboys to under 21s. We have rivals from both sides of the border circling our club constantly looking to try and entice our young players and, most importantly, we have academy graduates who have stepped up and play regularly in our first team, proving their worth.

“Those are all positive performance indicators. We will have dedicated recruitment, analysis and sports science arms that will make what we offer as good as any other academy in Scotland.”

Scottish FA performance director Malky Mackay said: “This is a significant milestone for Project Brave. Club Academy Scotland is a fundamental part of the process and a lot of work has gone into developing the criteria used to assess the clubs.

“From day one this has been a collaborative activity. The clubs have been engaged at every step, with daily dialogue to help with their applications. We have been heartened and inspired by so many of the positive things we have seen in regards to the development of young Scottish footballers and our aim is to assist clubs and encourage them to hit the highest possible standards.”

Madden in charge for Dons clash

The referee for Saturday’s Ladbrokes Premiership clash with Aberdeen at Pittodrie is Bobby Madden.

The match will be Bobby’s fourth in charge of the Steelmen this campaign – after the 39-year-old took charge of the 1-0 loss against Hibs, the 2-1 loss against Rangers on the opening day and the 2-0 win over Kilmarnock.

His overall record in charge of the Steelmen reads eight wins; fifteen defeats and one draw from twenty-four games. The Fir Parkers have netted 31 times, and conceded 44. In those games, he has booked 69 players, 38 of those cautions flashed at players wearing Claret and Amber.

Three players have been sent for an early shower, Anthony Stokes for a lunging tackle on Keith Lasley at Celtic Park last season, Stuart Carswell – who came off the bench against Partick and picked up two yellows – and Keith Lasley after the now-assistant manager picked up a red card for a late challenge on Kenny McLean.

Bobby will be ably assisted by Gordon Crawford and David Roome. Euan Anderson is on fourth official duties.

Cadden and Campbell feature for Scotland

Allan Campbell and Chris Cadden played the full 90 minutes for Scotland’s Under 21s as they lost 2-0 to Ukraine on Tuesday night.

The Motherwell pair, who both also featured in the draw with Latvia last week, played in midfield for Scot Gemmill’s side in front of a crowd of just over 1000 people at McDiarmid Park.

Ukraine struck in the 45th and 90th minutes through Andriy Boryachuck and Viktor Kovalenko respectively, the clinching goal coming as Scotland pressed for an equaliser.

Cadden almost gave the young Scots the lead in the first half but saw his shot blocked in the early exchanges.

Scotland now sit fourth in their Euro 2019 qualifying group after five games, six points behind England in top spot. Their next qualifying match is against Andorra in March.

Scotland: Fulton, Smith (Hardie 71), Taylor, McCrorie, McKenna, Campbell, Mallan, Cadden, Morgan, Thomas (Williamson 55), McBurnie (Wright 77).

Subs not used: Ruddy, Kerr, Docherty, Archibald.
