St Mirren U20s 0 – 1 Motherwell U20s

Motherwell under-20s returned to winning ways with a 1-0 win against St Mirren at the Paisley 2021 stadium.

Stephen Craigan named five first-team players in his starting eleven, including Gaël Bigirimana, Alex Fisher, Deimantas Petravičius and Stevie Hammell. Ellis Plummer also started but was forced off after half an hour.

It was a fairly uneventful evening in Paisley, with Craigan’s side controlling most of the ball and making most of the chances but failing to find the breakthrough in the opening 45.

Petravičius should have put his side in front when he broke through one-on-one, but a heavy touch afforded Ross Stewart the chance to smother the danger.

Ten minutes before the break Fisher went close too, sending a curling, left-footed effort narrowly over the bar from outside the box.

Craigan made a change at half time, replacing Liam Brown with striker Jamie Semple, as the Northern Irishman looked to find the breakthrough in the Development League encounter.

And just before the hour mark ‘Well had the ball in the back of the net through Fisher. The Englishman turned the ball beyond Stewart only to be denied by the linesman’s flag.

Despite hardly threatening the ‘Well goal, the home side nearly took the lead in the 77th minute but O’Keefe was denied by a phenomenal save from PJ Morrison to keep the game goalless.

Down the other end of the park, and with just seven minutes to go, Petravicius was hacked to the deck inside the box leaving no doubt in the referee’s mind who pointed to the spot.

The Lithuanian dusted himself, stepped up and thundered his spot kick perfectly in to the top corner.

It sealed all three points as ‘Well went close again through Fisher in the last minute, but held on for the narrow win.
