Stadium Origins

In May 1886 the club were formed and played their early matches at Roman Road.  In 1899 the Steelmen moved on to Dalziel Park off Airbles Street at Parkhead Street to allow housebuilding on their Roman Road ground.

In 1895 the club were on the move once again, this time to land on Lord Hamilton’s Dalzell Estate.  Known as Fir Park, there the have club have remained to this day hosting countless matches from Motherwell league games to European matches, from Scotland schoolboy matches to full-internationals.

Recent History

Fir Park remained largely unchanged from the early-60’s when the Main Stand was built until 1991 when the East Stand was born, replacing the existing covered terracing that for years had housed the more vociferous of the ‘Well support.

It began a modernisation programme that would see two new stands built to complement the converted East Stand and the existing Main Stand. Firstly the South Stand housing around 4800 visiting fans opened during season 1992’93 with the Davie Cooper Stand opening for the use of Motherwell fans during the 1994’95 campaign.

Thereafter the Main Stand was given a facelift to complete the redevelopment of the stadium and giving a capacity of 13,742.

Future Developments

The 2008 AGM saw the club announce plans to investigate the possibility of future redevelopment of Fir Park or a move in the longer term to a new location.

Visitors Section

Visting fans are generally housed in the South Stand behind the goals with one or two exceptions.  Fans of clubs who have intimated to MFC they estimate a small number of supporters will travel are occasionally allocated a section of the Main Stand.  In addition to the South Stand supporters of Rangers and Celtic may be allocated the South or North sections of the Phil O'Donnell Stand depending on demand.
