Recent History

ImageEaster Road has gone through several stages of redevelopment as the Leith club moved initially towards a stadium which met the Taylor Report rules and regulations and then to the arena the Hibees call home today.

As far back at the 1980’s the north end of the ground saw bench seating installed on what was terracing with a roof built over the seats.  The next development saw the huge bank of terracing on the east of the ground drastically reduced in size and then covered.  During the 1990’s seats were installed to convert the terracing to a stand, in much the same fashion as Motherwell’s own East Stand.

Other changes saw the enclosures in front of the Main Stand seated along with the seating installed on the uncovered terracing for visiting fans at the south end of the stand.

Since then however Hibs have made massive strides in building a modern impressive stadium.  Three similarly sized two-tier stands have been built at the north, south and west sides of the ground, leaving the old East Stand awaiting modernisation.  The stadium is regularly used for smaller Scotland internationals and Cup semi-finals.

Future Developments

Hibernian chairman Rod Petrie spoke recently of plans to have a new stand in place to replace the existing East Stand as soon as 2010 and how he would seek to involve Hibs fans in the discussions on what supporters would like to see in the new grandstand.

Visitors Section

Since its inception Motherwell fans have always been housed in the South Stand.  On occasion sections of the top and lower tiers have been made available to travelling Dossers though of late our allocation has been anything between a third to half of the lower tier, closest to the West Stand.

MAGIC MOTHERWELL MOMENT

It was late April 1994 and while the focus for many was securing a UEFA Cup spot, ‘Well travelled to Easter Road still with a conceivable chance of winning the Premier League.  Tommy Coyne gave the Steelmen a lead they held until deep into the second half.  The home side, with hopes themselves of claiming a place in Europe, did their utmost to claw ‘Well’s lead back before one of the moments of the season took place.  The classy Miodrag Krivokapic, who in just a few months had become a massive fan favourite, continued to push forward as ‘Well broke.  As the move continued to make inroads into the Hibs half, so the defender continued his run arriving in the box at the perfect moment to knock the ball home.  For a second time seemed to stop as both player and supporters paused to confirm whether what they’d just seen had actually happened.  Then…..bedlam as Krivokapic hurled himself on the fence, screaming in delight, blowing kisses with scores of Motherwell fans hurtling down the terracing to celebrate with him.
