Recent History

St JohnstoneSaints left Muirton Park behind and moved to McDiarmid Park in 1989.  Saints were one of the first clubs to move away from the “Main Stand and three sides of terracing” model to a stadium consisting of four single tiered stands, that were all seated and covered. Three of the stands are of the same height, with the Main Stand being the largest of the four. When opened the ground also boasted the then relatively modern innovation of an electronic scoreboard situated in a corner of the ground.

The stadium also incorporated car-parks for both home and away supports and an astroturf pitch within a few yards of the Main Stand.

Future Developments

There no plans in the immediate future to make any changes of note to the stadium though since it opened the club have added a series of white seats to spell out St Johnstone FC in the East Stand.

Visitors Section

The North Stand was designed to host travelling supports though by the conclusion of Saints last top flight campaign Saints had elected to house smaller sets of away fans in the north end of the West (Main) Stand.

The North Stand holds 2,000 which if allocated to 'Well fans should comfortably house the regular group of travelling Dossers.  Where required however, such as Motherwell's visit on Scottish Cup duty tie in 2004, half the Main Stand can also be made available for visiting supports.

Parking

As mentioned earlier McDiarmid Park has a fair sized car park available for use for buses and cars conveying 'Well fans to Perth. Beware though that it can take some time to vacate the car park at the end of the game.

Getting there by Rail

At almost 3 miles away from McDiarmid Park, Perth train station isn't ideal for making your way to the stadium and will likely require you to make use of a taxi to complete your journey.

MAGIC MOTHERWELL MOMENT

The home side were reckoned to be a good bet for a “giant-killing” by the  nation's pundits when the Scottish Cup 3rd round draw paired 'Well with Saints at McDiarmid Park in 2004.

A large travelling support though saw 'Well turn in a thoroughly professional display to race into a 2-0 first half lead thanks to a David Clarkson double.

The icing on the cake came in injury time from debutant Scott McDonald who fired home his first goal for the club in front of a stand full of ecstatic Steelmen into whom he proceeded to launch himself as he celebrated.
