Dundee Utd

With Dundee no-longer in the SPL, it’s only one trip to the City of Discovery these days. Tannadice Park often provides and entertaining and atmospheric setting for the keenly contested tie between both clubs.

Recent History

ImageTannadice can claim not one but two firsts in Scottish football.  Opened in 1962 the Main Stand, now known as the Jerry Kerr Stand, was the first in the country to have a cantilever design, free from supporting roof columns.  The Terrors followed this up by being the first club in the country to have glass fronted “boxes” for the use of sponsors as far back as 1971.

Save for the redeveloped Fair Play Enclosure in the late 1980’s Tannadice remained largely unchanged until the two-tier George Fox stand, opposite the Main Stand, opened in 1992.  The newly renamed Eddie Thompson Stand was constructed in 1994 with ‘The Shed’ behind the opposite goal being converted to seating along the lines of ‘Well’s East Stand.  In 1997 redevelopment of Tannadice was completed when the Fair Play Enclosure was replaced by a two-tiered stand.

Future Developments

At numerous points over the last 30 years a shared stadium with Dundee has been mooted, yet never came to fruition.  With clubs having redeveloped their own stadia however it seems only a bid from the SFA for a future European Championship would see such talk reignited.

Visitors Section

‘Well fans have found themselves on all four sides of Tannadice over the years, as the ground has been redeveloped but for the most part are now housed over two tiers in the old Fair Play Enclosure.

The stand ticks several boxes as it offers views along the side of the pitch, a rarity in the SPL and an even rarer option of watching the game from the immediate proximity of the Motherwell dugout.

Getting there by Rail

Dundee train station is over two miles away from the ground and is a walk of around thirty minutes away from the stadium, so a taxi may be recommended.

Directions from the station to the ground:

If you choose to walk leave the station via the long covered footbridge, take the exit to the right before the walkway enters the Nethergate Centre. This exit has steps down to Union Street. Go to the top of Union Street and turn right into High Street, after a couple of hundred yards veer left into the pedestrianised Murraygate and proceed to the Wellgate Centre. Go via the escalators in the Wellgate Centre to the top floor of the centre and exit onto Victoria Road. (If Wellgate is closed, turn left along Panmure Street, right up Meadowside and right onto Victoria Road to rear of Wellgate Shopping Centre).

Here you have two choices, via the Hilltown – a shorter distance but with a very steep incline or via Dens Road – a longer road but less hilly.

Option 1 via Hilltown: Cross Victoria Road to the foot of the Hilltown walk up this for approx 1/3 mile until you reach the junction of Main Street and Strathmartine Road (this is easily recognisable by the ornamental clock near the junction). Turn right onto Main Street and proceed until you reach the junction with Isla Street (church on the corner opposite the Snug Bar). Turn left into Isla Street & you will see the ground directly ahead of you.

Option 2 via Dens Road:  Turn right onto Victoria Road and proceed about 1/4 mile, veer left at the Eagle Mills into Dens Road. Pass Dura Street, Alexander Street and Dens Road Market then right into Arklay Street. Once you reach Tannadice Street you can see the Tannadice ground.

MAGIC MOTHERWELL MOMENT

Having beaten the Arabs on league business just seven days before Motherwell returned the following Saturday in February 1994 for a 4th round Scottish Cup tie.  Having gone behind, the hosts equalised then took the lead as they sought to avenge the previous weekend’s result.  Tommy Coyne missed a rare penalty for Motherwell midway through the second half and the home-side looked set to make it through to the Quarter Finals.  That was before John Philliben blasted the ball high into the net deep into injury time to spark wild celebrations amongst close to 4000 travelling ‘Well fans.
