Voted the ‘Best Away Ground’ in the SPL at the Clydesdale Bank Awards last season, Tynecastle is indeed a fantastic place to play football. Always an occasion, the Gorgie trip is one the most eagerly anticipated on the ‘Well fans’ calendar.

Recent History
Throughout the 70’s, 80’s and 90’s Tynecastle remained largely unchanged until three sides of the stadium saw some dramatic redevelopment.
To meet their all-seater responsibilities the Jambos initially installed seats in the uncovered terracing behind the goals at the Gorgie Road end and in the enclosures in front of the Main Stand, however these were never considered anything more than temporary while more permanent works were arranged.
As the 1990’s wore on the Gorgie side built three large new stands in the Gorgie Road, Wheatfield and Roseburn ends of the stadium giving them a capacity of just over 18,000 and one of the most atmospheric arenas in the country.
Future Developments
With the Main Stand having been in use for around 90 years it looks every bit its age when compared to the new structures on the other side of the ground. Talk of redevelopment of this stand has never been far away but costs and the apparent lack of room to build has ensured plans have remained just talk.
Once again however the subject of a new Main Stand has surfaced with the Hearts owners unveiling plans to spend £51m on a new 10,000 two-tier stand that will boast a variety of facilities and bring the Tynecastle up to around 23,000.
Visitors Section
The introduction of segregation saw ‘Well fans use the Gorgie Road terrace in days gone by but the regeneration of Tynecastle saw supporters seated in the uncovered Gorgie Road stand and the Main Stand before settling in the Roseburn Stand.
The stand is normally shared with home supporters with Dossers in the section closest to the Main Stand, however when on Scottish Cup business Motherwell took an allocation of the whole Roseburn Stand filling it to its capacity.

MAGIC MOTHERWELL MOMENT
It was late January 1999 and having beaten the then Cup holders the Sunday before in the Scottish Cup, Motherwell travelled to Tynecastle attempting to make it a double. Lee McCulloch opened the scoring in the 48th minute and Derek Adams doubled the lead to secure a rare win with twenty minutes to go. John Boyle was beginning his push to build the club into the third force in the country. Big money signings were coming to the club the latest of which had been all but been confirmed in the run up to the game as John Spencer’s loan deal was made permanent. Things had rarely seemed more positive for the club and the win at Tynecastle encapsulated that feeling of excitement and anticipation. History proved it wasn’t to be but for that short period of time it was a wonderful feeling believing the club was on the cusp of something special.
