Give Learning a Sporting Chance

The Give Learning a Sporting Chance project uses sport as the hook to encourage young people aged sixteen to twenty-five back into learning.

Give Learning a Sporting Chance is a partnership project between North Lanarkshire Adult Literacy and Numeracy Partnership (North Lanarkshire Council, further education colleges, STUC, Learning Connections, Apex Scotland, Lanarkshire NHS, Careers Scotland, Volunteer Centre, Lead Scotland and WEA Scotland) and Motherwell Football Club.

It is an eight to ten week programme, held at Motherwell Football Club and won a National Health Award from the Scottish Adult Learning Partnership in 2006.

It is a flexible programme tailored to cater for anyone who wants to develop and improve their current numeracy and literacy skills, aged over sixteen years.Image

Each day's activity includes a contribution from the club staff, a literacy/numeracy session to reinforce the topics covered by the club, a coaching session, and lunch in the club’s Centenary Suite.

Topics covered during the programme include the history of Motherwell Football Club; the club’s community programme; healthy eating; security and policing of home matches; an interview with the players; calculating hospitality costs; writing a match report and creating a photo-representation of the experience.

Various organisations also visit the group to talk about future learning opportunities in education, training, employment and voluntary work.

The group are also given the opportunity to undertake the SFA Early Touches coaching certificate.

Coaching is provided by SFA coaches, Brian MacDonald and Scott Richardson, employed by Motherwell F.C. Communication and number skills development are led by the Adult Literacy and Numeracy Partnership's Pauline Russell.
