At just twenty-three Ben Heneghan finds himself the “old head” in Motherwell’s youthful central defence.

Signed by Mark McGhee in the summer of 2016 Ben was brought to Fir Park from English National League side Chester City.

Ben began his career in Everton’s youth academy before moving to Stoke City, for whom he played until his release in 2014.

With his only previous first team experience gained during a loan spell at Droylsden the defender had trials at both Oldham and Accrington before joining Chester in August 2014.

Ben’s Chester debut came in a 3-1 away win against Braintree where he came on as a 46th minute substitute. Initially filling in at right-back it was some months before he settled into his preferred position in central-defence.

By this point he had already written himself into Chester folklore when he netted a 94th minute winner in City’s grudge match against Wrexham, Louis Moult and all.

Come the end of his two years with the Deva Stadium side Heneghan was being linked with teams as high at English Championship level. Motherwell were also monitoring his development however and whilst others deliberated the Steelmen made their move to snap up the 6ft 4in defender on a two year deal.

If not as successful as it might have been Ben’s first season at Fir Park was terrific for his development as he learned from playing alongside former Scotland captain Stephen McManus and handled the pressure of a relegation battle that went to the penultimate game of the season.

After several near things, including at least one dubiously disallowed goal, Ben finally got off the mark with his goal in Motherwell’s opening league game of the 17’18 season against Rangers.  And now following the retirement of McManus the responsibility of being the senior figure in the centre of Motherwell’s defence has fallen upon Heneghan’s shoulders.
