One of Motherwell’s most prized assets is the supremely talented Scotland U21 internationalist Chris Cadden.

A player with close links to the club Cadden’s father, Stevie, came through the ‘Well youth ranks when Tommy McLean was in charge with his brother Nicky also involved for a time with the Motherwell academy.

Chris was just seventeen when he made his Motherwell debut under Stuart McCall in a 4-1 win over Hearts on 01 March 14.

A handful of appearances followed over the course of the next twelve months before the midfielder was farmed out to neighbouring Albion Rovers on a loan deal until the end of the 14’15 season.

There Chris benefited hugely from the three months of regular first team football as Rovers romped to the Second Division title.

Back at Fir Park it was under Mark McGhee that the youngster began to flourish.  Given his first start by the two-time Motherwell boss Cadden scored his first goal for the club in a 2-2 draw with Dundee on 30th January ’16. Chris grew both in confidence and stature as the season progressed as he made himself a mainstay of the Motherwell midfield.

A measure of how just much Cadden had developed was evident when he captained Stephen Craigan’s Motherwell U20’s side to the Scottish Youth Cup in 2016. If ever the saying “men against boys” felt appropriate it was to describe the unfortunate Hearts players who had to contest the midfield battle against the much more powerful Chris in that Hampden Final.

Chris’ first full season in the Motherwell first team saw him net 5 times as he added a regular scoring threat to his powerful surging attacks. He also demonstrated his versatility when called upon to fill in in a previously unfamiliar right wing back role as an injury hit ‘Well side battled against relegation.

His performances for Motherwell were rewarded with a call up to the Scotland U21 squad.

Starting the current campaign in tremendous form Cadden netted four times in his opening six games.
