Biography

Another from the rich seam of talent that Motherwell have sourced from the English non-league game Elliott Frear has had a significant impact since arriving in Lanarkshire in January 2017.

Frear graduated through the academy system at his home-town club Exeter City, having at one stage been released and then re-signed by the Grecians.

After securing a professional contract with the St James Park outfit he was loaned to Tiverton Town to aid his development in 2009.

Back at Exeter the future England C internationalist made his professional debut in the FA Cup against Walsall on 12 November ’11 coming on as a late substitute and helping City secure a replay. And it was in that re-played match where Elliott would net his first senior goal, an equalising goal that helped extend the tie further, to extra-time.

In 2012, having dropped a little out of contention, Frear was once again loaned out, this time to Salisbury City; and upon the completion of his Exeter contract he would join The Whites on a permanent deal.

An impressive season caught the eye of Forest Green Rovers for whom Elliott signed in 2014. There he began to add a goalscoring threat to the exciting wing-play that had become his hallmark.

Frear came close to making a return to the English senior leagues in 2016 when Rovers were denied promotion in Wembley Play-Off Final by a Grimsby Town side containing future team-mates Richard Tait and Craig Clay.

Mark McGhee had long since identified the winger as a potential replacement for the much sought after Marvin Johnson when the time came that Johnson would move on, however the last gasp nature of the former Kidderminster man’s transfer to Oxford in the 2016 summer transfer window left McGhee out of time to secure Elliott’s transfer to Motherwell.

That move however duly took place in January 2017.

Making his debut against Rangers on 28th January ’17 Elliott took only a short while to settle before becoming an important figure in a Motherwell side battling against the drop.

Despite at times being utilised in an unfamiliar wing-back role he chipped in with a number of assists and the clinching goal in Motherwell’s 3-1 win over Kilmarnock in the penultimate match of the season that secured the club’s top flight status for another year.

Starting the season a similar vein Frear grabbed late winning goals against both Edinburgh City and Berwick Rangers to ensure the Steelmen topped their Betfred group with maximum points.
