One of several young strikers at Fir Park attempting to establish themselves in the first team is Gary Smith
Snapped up from Queen’s Park, Smith turned out for the Motherwell U19 side for whom he scored often enough and performed sufficiently well to be rewarded with promotion to the first team squad.
His top-team debut came quickly following that elevation in stature when he came on as substitute in Motherwell’s 1-0 win over Icelandic side Breidablik in a 2010’11 Europa League qualifier.
As Craig Brown added to his striking options before the close of the summer transfer window Gary was farmed out to Dumbarton on a loan deal to give him further first team action.
It was a steep learning curve for the forward as the Sons, struggled with life in the Second Division. In his seven games for Dumbarton Smith failed to taste victory once, and failed to find the net.
Back at Fir Park once his loan deal was concluded Gary made a further substitute outing for the ‘Well senior side in a 4-0 loss to Dundee Utd, late in the campaign as manager Stuart McCall rotated his squad in preparation for the forthcoming Scottish Cup Final.
The striker added two further substitute appearances for the Steelmen in the early part of the 11’12 season in victories over Inverness in the SPL and Clyde in the League Cup.
