The Steelmen find themselves in the enviable position of going into season 2017’18 with two fine goalkeepers challenging for the gloves in the shape of Trevor Carson and Russell Griffiths.

A product of Everton’s youth academy the Chester born stopper was farmed out on several occasions to aid his development whilst with the Goodison Park outfit.

Spells at Northwich Victoria and Colwyn Bay were followed by a brief stint at Halifax where Russell played in the FA Cup against Wycombe and briefly (he was sent off after half an hour) faced future team-mate Ryan Bowman in a National League encounter against Gateshead.

Season 16’17 brought a new challenge for Russell in the form of a six month loan deal at Cheltenham Town, affording him his first opportunity to play league football.

Capped as far as England U20 level Griffiths made 29 league and cup appearances for the Whaddon Road side.

Russell was barely back at Goodison before he was out on loan once more this time to Motherwell when he signed a six month loan deal with the Steelmen in January 2017.

After spending a period as understudy to Craig Samson, Russell was given his ‘Well debut against Ross County at Fir Park on 6th May 2017.

Pitched into the white heat of a relegation battle the young goalkeeper showed maturity and composure beyond his years and helped Motherwell retain their top flight status, his shut-out at Hamilton in the vital derby win being a highlight.

Available upon the conclusion of his Everton contract ‘Well boss Stephen Robinson moved swiftly to bring the Englishman to Fir Park on a permanent basis.
