Maroš Klimpl profile

Much travelled defender Maroš Klimpl joined Motherwell on an initial a five month loan deal at the close of the 2008 summer transfer window and proved to be a real hit at the club.

Maroš played for many years for youth side Dynamo Dolny Kubin, in the north of Slovakia before turning professional with MFK Ruzomberok.

The Slovak defender spent a season with Ruzomberok before joining Dukla Banska Bysrica. After just a year at the SNP Stadium Klimpl moved back to Ruzomberok for whom he would make 53 appearances between 1999-2001.

His next port of call of Viktoria Zizkov in the Czech Republic and Maroš was at the club when they famously knocked Rangers out of the UEFA Cup in 2002. In three seasons with Viktoria Maroš played 66 games, scoring three times for the club from Prague.

In 2004 Klimpl was on the move again, this time to sign for Banik Ostrava, again in the Czech Repulic. The defender would spend three seasons with the "Banicek" before moving to Danish Superliga side FC Midtjylland in 2007.

Throughout his career the defender has impressed sufficiently to be capped 19 times for his country.

Looking for cover for his defence Motherwell manager Mark McGhee took the Slovakian defender on trial in August 2008 and signed him on a 5 month loan deal.

Unfortunately the ink had barely dried on the Slovak's contract before he succumbed to an injury that would see him spend more than two months on the sidelines.

At last in late November Maroš returned to fitness and was included as an unused substitute in defeats to Falkirk and Hibernian before getting his first starts away to Aberdeen in early December.

The Slovakian had endeared himself with a willingness to graft for the team but, following an extension to his loan deal, it was only after he was moved into midfield would his true worth to the team become apparent.

Following a series of morale sapping defeating defeats Mark McGhee freshened up his side for the visit of Inverness Caledonian Thistle in late December with one his moves to instil Klimpl as a rugged enforcer in front of his defence.

It proved to be a masterstroke with both the midfield and rearguard looking much more solid as a result.

Klimpl looked accomplished in the role and showed that reputations count for nothing as he stood tall against the best the SPL had to throw at him.

His facial likeness and style of play had older fans comparing him to another Motherwell midfield destroyer of old, Colin O'Neill and Maroš proved equally as popular with the 'Well support, with groups waving Slovakian national flags and creating several chants in his honour.

Those same Motherwell fans were hopeful that the player's stay would be extended further, particularly given that Maroš had agreed with Midtylland to have his contracted terminated upon the conclusion of his loan deal at Motherwell.

Unfortunately with the departure of Mark McGhee the club weren't best placed to offer a permanent deal to the player and he soon attracted interest from McGhee's new employers Aberdeen and Welsh outfit Cardiff City.
