    Leeann: “Play your part tonight”

Motherwell Chief Executive Leeann Dempster has urged ‘Well fans going to tonight’s Europa League match against Levante to be the “twelfth man”.

Commenting, she said: “Both the management staff and players have spoken extensively about the atmosphere at the last home European game and even although the crowd might not reach the same level in terms of numbers as the Champions League match, the home stands can still play a vital role.

“I would also like to the time to remind our fans about their behaviour and that they, once again, are representing the club, the SPL and Scotland in the eyes of UEFA.

“Motherwell has established a reputation at Europe’s governing body as being a very friendly, welcoming and well-behaved club and that is down to you, the supporters.

“However, there were instances of paper throwing at the last match against Panathinaikos which the club were sadly censured for.

“We are awaiting the verdict of a hearing in the very near future but we are keen to stress the importance of good behaviour at tonight’s match.

“Be respectful to our opponents and roar on our players in a way befitting our club and this country in the spirit of the UEFA Respect campaign.

“This could be another fantastic night in the history of our club. Thanks as always for your support and enjoy the match.”

TV: McCall up for Spanish challenge

‘Well boss Stuart McCall reckons La Liga side Levante will prove stiff opposition for his men when they meet in the Europa League tomorrow.

Levante, managed by the experienced Juan Ignacio Martínez, finished sixth in La Liga, bettered only by Real Madrid, Barcelona, Valencia, Malaga and Athletico Madrid.

The Steelmen have already tasted European action this campaign in the form of a UEFA Champions League match with Panathinaikos and McCall is hoping the experience from that match will help his side, although he is not sure quite what to expect.

[pullquote]We’re Motherwell, we’ll give as good as we get and hopefully on the night we can get a result to take over to Spain and make it a real tough encounter for them.[/pullquote]

He said: “We won’t know how they are going to approach the game but we’ve just got to concentrate on how we are going to approach it, which might be a bit different to the Panathinaikos game.

“If you look at Levante, they’ve had an outstanding season and only just missed out on the Champions League. They’ve got an experienced side, don’t concede a lot away from home and like to hit on the counter-attack.

“We’re underdogs, there’s no doubt about it. It’s a big ask but we’ll be more than satisfied if we create the same amount of chances as we did in the home leg against Panathinaikos and we’ll just play our own way and have a go.

“We’re Motherwell, we’ll give as good as we get and hopefully on the night we can get a result to take over to Spain and make it a real tough encounter for them.”

    TV: Law relishing Europa test

Midfield maestro Nicky Law has spoke of his excitement at facing La Liga high-flyers Levante U.D. in the Europa League tomorrow.

The Granotes finished sixth in the Spanish top league last year having led for a number of weeks including a 1-0 victory over eventual Champions Real Madrid.

A stiff challenge for the Fir Parkers but one Law is relishing and the former Rotherham and Sheffield United man reckons the squad will have learned some vital lessons from their previous Euro experiences.

[pullquote]It will be a tough game but we’re at home and will feel like we can do well against any team.[/pullquote]

He said: “It’s great for us as players, and as a club, to have this two-legged game against a team that did very well in La Liga.

“Against Panathinaikos we didn’t really get a chance to see them play but this time we saw them play on Sunday night against Atletico Madrid so we know a little bit more about them going into the game which is a bonus.

“We’ve done our homework but it’s up to us to put the things we’ve worked on onto the pitch.

“We’ve had five competitive matches now and we’re all feeling a lot more match fit and sharper too so all those things hopefully give us a better chance tomorrow night.

“They’re maybe quite similar to us last season in that maybe they over-achieved but at the weekend they’ve got a good result against Atletico, who won this tournament last year, so that will tell you the quality that they’ve got in their ranks.

“It will be a tough game but we’re at home and will feel like we can do well against any team.”

    Pre-order your Levante Mag now

Motherwell take on La Liga side Levante U.D. in the UEFA Europa League this Thursday but you can pre-order your matchday magazine now.

Following on from the success of the sold-out 84-page publication produced for the Champions League clash with Panathinaikios, we’ve only gone and bettered it with yet another excellent piece of history that you simply mustn’t miss.

But what can you expect from your ‘Steelmen’ European edition…?

There is the usual update from both Stuart McCall and the club skipper Keith Lasley who both look forward to yet another fantastic Euro night at Fir Park. Chief Executive Leeann Dempster once again introduces the magazine and welcomes everyone to the match and sounds the rally call to ensure this isn’t the last big night we have at the home of Lanarkshire’s Premier Club.

Editor Andy Ross has an exclusive chat with Motherwell’s all-time European goalscorer, and goal hero from Saturday’s win at Rugby Park, Jamie Murphy; the former Scotland U21 star romanticizes about another huge night in the history of Motherwell FC.

But that’s not where the features end; no, no, no!

The Press Association’s Gavin McCafferty catches a word with Motherwell’s former midfielder, and now boss of Premiership side Wigan, Roberto Martinez. The Spaniard looks back at his short stint as a Steelman, how the abrupt and sad ending doesn’t hold any bitterness and talks in detail about what ‘Well fans can expect.

The features and big names keep coming…

Another of the Claret and Amber alumni and now England goalkeeper John Ruddy looks back on his time at Fir Park and how making his debut in the Bucharest cauldron helped launch his career. The giant stopper recalls fondly his time in the SPL and chats candidly about his rise to becoming one of the best stoppers in Europe.

We also spoke to the Scottish FA’S Performance Director, Dutchman Mark Wotte, who gives his in-depth assessment of a year in charge and the progress made in bettering our Elite game.

There is also an 12-page section dedication to our visitors from Valencia. Not only is there the low-down on the club and the recent success story, but a player-by-player account of the stars likely to line up in at Fir Park.

A part of that is an exclusive Q&A with Levante skipper Sergio Ballesteros who speaks passionately about what this tie means to him and the club.

There is a breakdown of Spanish footy as well as a guide to Valencia for those travelling over for the return leg. Spanish footy website Futbolgrande’s Sam Marsden also interviews Barrhead-born Ryan Harper who has spent all his footballing life in Spain, including a stint with La Liga side Real Betis.

    But wait, there’s even more…

Craig Anderson, author of the excellent SPL Stats blog, has penned another detailed account, this time of the new and improved Europa League. There is also a souvenir poster with the squad lining up in the Olympic Stadium for our first ever away tie in the UEFA Champions League.

Don’t miss the Euro Quiz and a review of the Under 20’s start to the new campaign. There is also match reports from St Johnstone and Kilmarnock as well as the latest up-to-date ticket information.

The last Steelmen sold-out – This is one piece of Motherwell history you won’t want to miss.

Magazines will be in the ‘Well Shop from Thursday and sellers will be outside the ground before the match in their usual spots.

To make sure, you can pre-order now and have one sent to your home, getting there on the day of the match. Do that by CLICKING HERE.

    TV: Murphy delighted with double

Goal-hero Jamie Murphy was thrilled with his match-winning contribution as Motherwell edged out Kilmarnock at Rugby Park this afternoon.

Murphy’s first-half brace was enough to claim all three points and a deserved win, the first success over the Ayrshire side in almost two years.

The win puts Motherwell joint top of the Clydesdale Bank Premier League, for twenty-four hours at least, and the Glasgow-born 22-year old was happy to play his part.

[pullquote]Getting the goals early was an advantage. To take the lead into the second half was great and we managed to hold on for the three points.[/pullquote]

“I’m delighted,” he beamed. “Obviously you want to get your first goal of the season as early as possible. I’ve managed to do that and we’ve also got the win which is even better.

“Getting the goals early was an advantage. To take the lead into the second half was great and we managed to hold on for the three points.

“My job is to go by people and score goals and thankfully my shot went in. The second was a great pass from Higgy.

“They’ve played a high line which is hard for defences especially playing against Henrik. It was just me against the goalie and thankfully it has gone in again.”

    TV: McCall lauds ‘excellent’ ‘Well

Steelmen boss Stuart McCall hailed his players after a superb 2-1 away win over Kilmarnock at Rugby Park this afternoon.

Jamie Murphy had put the Fir Parkers ahead with an excellent finish but the visitors were quickly pegged back by an equally brilliant Gary Harkins effort.

But former Scotland U21 hitman Murphy would have the final say, beating the home defence’s offside trap before rounding Cammy Bell and slotting into an empty net for his 39th Steelmen goal.

[pullquote]We merited the win, played some nice football for long spells and always looked dangerous on the break; I am delighted[/pullquote]

McCall was delighted with the showing, particularly as the Steelmen finished the match with eight players 22 or under – four of them teenagers.

He told MFC TV: “I was really pleased with the way we started the game and although obviously Jamie’s two goals will take the headlines, there were some excellent performances out there.

“We probably should have killed them off and got the third but we didn’t and Daz has had to make one fantastic save to keep the three points for us. Overall we merited the win, played some nice football for long spells and always looked dangerous on the break; I am delighted.

“We always try to win games and today we set-up a little differently, but again in a positive manner. We wanted to get at them which we did on many occasions.

“We were looking for not only victory but a good performance and we got both.”
