TV: Ojamaa upbeat despite recent run

Estonian International Henrik Ojamaa maintains Motherwell are still full of confidence despite a difficult run of results.

Although the Steelmen have taken just four points from a possible nine, there is an acceptance that performances have still been positive.

Chances have been plentiful but it has been a lack of goals that has been the real Achilles heel in recent times.

The eight-times capped striker hasn’t hit the back of the net himself since bagging a brace against St Johnstone last April but is satisfied with his contribution, including five assists, and is certain the side will return to the form that clinched a Champions League spot in 2011/12.

[pullquote]Our quality will come through and I believe we’ll get the results we deserve.[/pullquote]

“We could be playing bad and not getting results so it could be worse,” he joked whilst chatting to the press at Motherwell’s weekly news conference.

“Personally I’m quite happy with the way we’ve been playing as a team and I think it’s just as good as how we were playing last season when we were in a really good league position.

“We’re just not getting the breaks that we got last season and when we’re dominating games, we just can’t convert that into three points. Our quality will come through and I believe we’ll get the results we deserve.

“I was hoping from the three games last week that we’d have picked up nine points and at times I thought our performances would have definitely deserved that but it wasn’t to be and we got four points from nine.

“It’s good to have this game coming up, against a team who are doing really well at the moment so I’m relishing the challenge on Sunday. We are going there to win.”

    Weatherseal & Alzheimer Scotland

Weatherseal and the SPL have announced that Football Memories, an Alzheimer Scotland project, has been selected by supporters to benefit from the league’s first official Charity Weekend.

Nearly 4,000 fans cast votes via www.weatherseal-charity.co.uk over a seven day period to 28th October 2012, with clubs the length and breadth of the country encouraging fans to have their say in a wide ranging debate.

Alzheimer Scotland will benefit from a range of rights to promote the emotive Football Memories project on the weekend of 8th/9th December 2012.

As well as bucket collections organised by Weatherseal staff, the SPL’s official home improvement partner will also gift their marketing rights for that weekend. This includes advertising space and digital perimeter display boards.

Football Memories is a partnership between Alzheimer Scotland and the Scottish Football Museum at Hampden Park. There are over 84,000 people in Scotland with dementia, the equivalent of every spectator on an average Scottish football weekend.

Groups are being established locally across Scotland, and football images and memorabilia are used as reminiscence therapy for people with dementia and other memory problems. The recall by many attending the groups is fascinating and several stories are being recorded for use with future generations of football supporters.

Tony Reilly, Weatherseal managing director, commented: “Weatherseal is proud to be supporting Football Memories. It’s a fantastic project, hugely emotive and we’ve been very impressed by the engaging way in which the organisation has engaged with football to such positive effect.”

Michael White, Alzheimer Scotland Football Memories project manager said: “Alzheimer Scotland is absolutely delighted that Football Memories has been selected to be the charity partners for the Weatherseal SPL Charity Weekend. It is fantastic that through the Charity Weekend thousands of present-day football fans will have the chance to support this work and help us to extend the project to supporters all across Scotland.

“We are incredibly grateful to Weatherseal and the SPL for this opportunity, and want to say a huge thank you to them and every single person who voted for us.”

SPL chief executive Neil Doncaster added: “The Weatherseal SPL Charity weekend has been hugely successful so far, in that thousands of supporters have had their say in choosing Football Memories. I am sure they will continue to embrace the project.”

TV: JJ angered at Tynecastle defeat

Jonatan Johansson’s was angered by his side’s capitulation as they threw away a two-goal lead to lose 4-2 to Hearts at Tynecastle this evening.

Motherwell were in cruise control after seventeen minutes with Axel Bossekota and Craig Moore firing the Fir Parkers in front.

However, a Billy King goal and a Jamie Walker hat-trick consigned ‘Well to another defeat and the Finn was far from happy after the match.

[pullquote]Maybe we thought it was too easy and thought we could just run the game for seventy minutes but football isn’t like.[/pullquote]

“I think that is the worst we’ve played,” he told MFC TV after the match.

“It’s most disappointing as we got a great start and looked dangerous.

“At two each we didn’t have the right work-ethic and didn’t work as a team nor did we pressure enough.

“We let Hearts come back into it too easy. They are a good side and showed much more enthusiasm and willingness to win than we did.

“Maybe we thought it was too easy and thought we could just run the game for seventy minutes but football isn’t like that and credit to Hearts for coming back.

“We have got a lot of hard work ahead of us.”

    Hearts U20s 4 – 2 Motherwell U20s

Motherwell U20s let slip a two-goal lead as Hearts came from behind to win 4-2 at a rain-soaked Tynecastle this evening.

The Steelmen raced into an early lead courtesy of goals from Axel Bossekota and Craig Moore which had Johansson’s men sitting pretty after seventeen minutes.

But a Billy King goal and an excellent hat-trick Jamie Walker gave the home side all three points – their fourth consecutive win in the Under 20s league.

The Claret and Amber men had an experienced starting eleven with Hollis, Kerr, Francis-Angol, Hetherington, Carswell, Daley and McHugh all having played for the first-team.

And that experience showed in the early stages as within the opening quarter, the visitors had raced into a two-goal lead.

Just seven minutes were on the clock when Bossekota got on the end of a well-worked Hetherington free-kick to flick past Mark Ridgers from close range.

The Congolese-born striker should have doubled his tally minutes later when he got on the end of a terrific McHugh pass inside the box. He cut inside his marker but with the full goal to aim at, somehow dragged his shot wide.

Hearts failed to heed the warning as shortly after, Craig Moore had made it two. McHugh was again the creator, this time slipping the ball into the young striker’s path and he took a touch to set himself before drilling it low under Ridgers.

The hosts looked stunned and took a bit of time to regain their composure before slowing but surely working their way in to the match. Their patient passing approach would pay off when Jamie Walker grabbed his first when he fired high past Lee Hollis from the edge of the area after a breathtaking passing move.

Hearts then laid siege towards the Motherwell goal but found Lee Hollis in good form. Indeed, for all the pressure, it was the Fir Parkers who should have restored their two-goal advantage on the stroke of half-time. Bob McHugh somehow managed to muscle his way through the Hearts defence but his low shot was somehow stopped by Ridgers from close range.

That would prove a crucial block as despite ‘Well notching a couple of half-changes at the start of the second period, it was Darren Murray’s men who got themselves level and went on to dominate the match.

It was Billy King who grabbed the leveller, getting on the end of a low cross from his brother Adam to slam into an empty net from about eight yards out.

At that point there appeared to be only one winner with maroon tails up. Hearts eventually got their noses in front with about half an hour left to play. Adam King was again the catalyst, bursting towards the by-line before turning over a dangerous cross that flicked off Gordon Smith kindly into the path of Walker who blasted home. There were a few Motherwell hands up for offside as the move started but replays show the Hearts right-back had timed his run to perfection.

The wind was taken completely out of ‘Well’s sails. Hearts had chances to extend their lead through Walker and Smith but neither could capitalise. Incredibly, it was Motherwell who passed up an excellent opportunity to level themselves.

McHugh and Carswell teamed up in the area but with neither taking the lead to shoot, it was left to Hearts defender McGhee who sliced it inches wide of the post with Ridgers rooted.

It was to prove the last real chance of note for the Fir Parkers as Hearts went on the rampage and only a superb showing from Lee Hollis kept the scoreline respectable. He made incredible saves from Smith (twice), Prychynenko (twice) and Nicholson.

He was absolutely helpless though in stopping the man of the match, Walker, from claiming his hat-trick. The midfielder was allowed to run and run before unleashing an unstoppable effort high into the roof of the net from the edge of the area.

It added an exclamation point to the home win which they probably deserved. Jonatan Johansson will have been frustrated at the way his side capitulated towards the end of the game. The Steelmen now face back-to-back home games and will need to pick up points soon to rescue what has been a fairly disappointing opener to the U20s season.

Motherwell: Hollis, Ashgar, Francis-Angol, Murray, Kerr, Hetherington (McCafferty – 46mins), Moore, Carswell (Leitch – 80mins), McHugh, Daley, Bossekota (Thomas – 65mins). Subs not used: Stewart, Green, Johnstone, Neill

    Goals: Bossekota (7), Moore (17)

    Booked: Daley, Asghar, Carswell

    McLean in charge for Inverness

Referee for Sunday’s Clydesdale Bank Premier League clash with Inverness at the Tulloch Caledonian Stadium will be Steven McLean.

McLean, brother of former ‘Well defender Brian, will be handling his first ‘Well game of the current campaign.

The 31-year old will be a familiar face to ‘Well fans having overseen three matches during the 2011/12 campaign too. He was the man in the middle for the SPL opener against Sunday’s opponents back in July 2011, the 3-1 win over Dundee United in September and the 4-3 success over Hibs at Fir Park – Michael Higdon grabbing a hat-trick.

McLean began his refereeing career back in 1997, aged just 16, but had to wait six years before being promoted to the SFA Senior List. It took him a further four years (June 2007) to get promoted to a Category 1 where he has spent the last three years handling SFL and ALBA Challenge Cup games as well as gaining experience as a fourth official at SPL matches.

He eventually made his bow in Scotland’s top league when he took charge of Aberdeen’s 1-0 away win at McDiarmid Park over two years ago.  A late Darren Mackie goal was enough to give the Dons all three points and McLean had a good afternoon, booking five players in a competitive contest.

McLean has been exceptionally busy this season too – handling seven SPL games already. The most recent was Dundee’s 1-0 win over Hearts at Dens Park ten days ago.

He also had the distinction of being the man in charge of the UEFA Champions League qualifier between KR Reykjavík  and HJK Helsinki – the Finns running out 2-1 winners. He also handled Tromsö IL of Norway and Ukrainians Metalurg Donetsk in the Europa League too.

McLean will be ably assisted by Graham Chambers and Stuart Macaulay with Barry Cook on fourth official duties.
