SRtRC: Fortnight of Action 2015
Thursday 15 October 2015Welcome to Show Racism the Red Card’s annual Fortnight of Action. The 2015 Fortnight of Action will unite Scottish football in making a stand against racism. We believe that it is vital to highlight the anti-racism message at this time, in conjunction with Football Against Racism in Europe (FARE).
All professional clubs will make a stand against racism over one weekend whether at home or away. We have coordinated the participation of the clubs’ actions to make it the biggest and most high profile fortnight so far.
At every SPFL game on Friday 16th, Saturday 17th, and Sunday 18th October, clubs will be united in calling for an end to racism in football and in society. Players in over 40 European countries are involved in similar events as part of the Football Against Racism in Europe (FARE) network against racism and discrimination.
Show Racism the Red Card has received excellent support from football clubs, football authorities and football fans over the length and breadth of Scotland – we would like to take this opportunity to thank you all.
We have heard of many instances where supporters have been proactive in promoting the anti-racism message, making it clear that racism and discrimination are not welcome at their club. We urge fans to continue to support the anti-racism message; it is the responsibility of us all to ensure that it is carried beyond the Fortnight of Action and beyond the terraces.
Neil Doncaster, Chief Executive of the SPFL, said: “Football is a powerful medium to break down barriers and promote tolerance. Our clubs have supported Show Racism the Red Card since season 2003/04 and once again, this united action in support of the campaign sends out the positive message that football is a game to be enjoyed by all.”
‘Well skipper Keith Lasley, added: “Motherwell FC is proud to stand with our fellow clubs in the SPFL Premiership to reject racism in football and in society.”
The campaign will continue to speak to all football clubs, the football authorities and the police to eradicate all forms of racist behaviour.
The SPFL and its clubs deplore all forms of racism and any racist behaviour will not be tolerated at SPFL.
This year the campaign has continued to develop partnerships with local authorities to deliver educational workshops combined with football coaching sessions in a number of regions. The workshops are delivered by a dedicated team of education workers and ex-professional footballers, providing a very positive method of educating our young people about the negative impact racism has on Scottish society.
Here’s a brief outline of what’s taking place during the Fortnight of Action this year:
- Anti-racism football festivals and projects across Scotland.
- Show Racism the Red Card actions at SPFL, Scottish Women’s Premier League, Scottish Women’s Football League, Scottish Junior Football matches.
- ‘Unite Against Racism’ actions at UEFA Champions League fixtures.
- Educational workshops in schools and community groups across Scotland.
Football is a sport that is followed by people across the world, and football matches should be an enjoyable experience for all, whatever their background. We all have a part to play in stamping out racism in football and society.
If you see or hear racism or sectarianism at any level of football, please report it to the stewards or police.
Our website also includes updates on Fortnight of Action events and more information on the Show Racism the Red Card campaign in Scotland.

Andy Boles joins Coaching staff
Wednesday 14 October 2015Motherwell FC is pleased to announce Andy Boles has joined the club as Lead Strength and Conditioning Coach.
Andy has spent the last three years in a similar position at English Championship side Middlesbrough, where he was in charge of the Strength and Conditioning department.
However, the Bellshill-born 30-year old wanted to return home and has joined the club to work on improving and measuring the fitness levels, as well as injury prevention, of the first-team squad, the Under 20s and the Elite Academy.
Andy started his football career at Hamilton Academicals, where he was Head of Sports Science between 2007 and 2012. He also spent a year at the Scottish Institute of Sport.

Mark McGhee returns as Motherwell boss
Tuesday 13 October 2015Motherwell FC is today delighted to confirm the appointment of Mark McGhee as manager.
McGhee was formerly Motherwell manager between 2007 and 2009, when he led the Steelmen to third place in the league table after a sensational debut season, guiding the team back into European football for the first time in twelve years.
Whilst his second season at Fir Park didn’t reach the heights of the first, he did again guide the club into the first ever season of the new Europa League.
The experienced coach, who is the current assistant manager at the Scottish National side, has also managed Reading, Leicester, Wolves, Millwall, Brighton, Aberdeen and Bristol Rovers and has signed a deal until May 2017.
The 58-year old was the unanimous choice of the Motherwell Board and will be in charge from Saturday’s home match with Celtic at Fir Park.
Commenting, Mark said: “I am delighted to be back at Fir Park and Motherwell, a club in which I have a real affection for after some fantastic highs and tragic lows in my last spell.
“I was really keen to get back into club management, but the destination was important. I’ve had several things put to me over the last few years, but it was important I returned at a club that was close to my heart and was a real challenge.
“I’ve spoken with the Owner and the Board and the direction and focus to make this club this best it can be was hugely attractive. There is a real drive and determination to achieve our aims and objectives, and I want to help by putting an attractive, winning team on the pitch.”
Chairman Brian McCaffery commented: “After a rigorous process, Mark was the outstanding candidate and the Board were delighted he has agreed to return. We hope he brings stability and on-field success and helps the club achieve its ambitious goals in the months and years ahead.
Majority shareholder Les Hutchison added: “The Football Committee have undertaken a very rigorous selection process and considered over 80 applicants and interviewed a very strong short list of candidates before making their recommendation to the Chairman and myself. I was delighted to talk in detail with Mark about the future plans for the club and he demonstrated a real enthusiasm for the task ahead. I was pleased he was the unanimous choice of the Board and wish him every success in his new role”.

St Mirren U20s 3 – 2 Motherwell
Tuesday 06 October 2015Motherwell Under 20s lost 3-2 to St Mirren in an incident-packed Development League match in Paisley tonight.
Unlike in previous games, it was ‘Well who took an early lead when Dylan Mackin prodded his side in front inside four minutes. However, Saints were level then infront before the break thanks to goals from Lewis McLear and Lewis Morgan.
The home side were reduced to ten men when Jaison McGrath was ordered off for a second bookable offence, before Dylan Falconer scored in controversial circumstances eight minutes from time.
However, despite the man advantage and scoring to level things up, it was the hosts who scored the winner late on through McLear to take all three points.Under 20s assistant Keith Lasley made significant changes to the side that drew with Hearts seven days ago. Indeed, only four players survived in a team that contained not one single over-age player in the squad.
And it was the away team, kitted in all Claret, who started the match on the front foot and took the lead after just four minutes.
Full back Luke Watt picked up the ball on the left hand side and wasted no time curling an inviting cross into the area. Luke Conlan picked up, but dallied a little, allowing Mackin to steal. The striker maintained his composure to coolly lift the ball up and over the outrushing Wilks to open the scoring.
Saints replied with a long-range strike from Barry Cuddihy that flew high over and into the stand, before Ross MacLean almost rounded off a good move with a back-post header, but it was straight at Wilks who saved.
The Saints keeper had to look smart seconds later when following his kick-out, the ball was quickly back at the feet of Mackin whose quick-fire shot deflected into the air and spun towards goal, reminiscent of Marvin Johnson’s Play-off Final goal against Rangers at Fir Park. Sadly for the Steelmen, Saints stopper Wilks moved his feet well and comfortably held.
Luke Watt had a trundler at goal just before the half hour but that was the last Motherwell would threaten in the half which the home side went on to dominate.
It started with an ambitious 40-yard bouncing effort from Conlan, which forced PJ Morrison to turn around at the expense of a corner.
However, the young keeper was powerless to prevent the hosts scoring with their next attack five minutes later. Saints did well to move the ball about on the edge of the ‘Well area, and after Lewis McLear’s neat one-two with Jaison McGrath, the former curled a low strike into the bottom corner with Morrison at full stretch.
It went from bad to worse for the Fir Parkers on the stroke of half-time as David Longwell’s side got their noses in front. Left back Jordan Stewart sent a tremendous through ball to Lewis Morgan, sending the Saints man clear. He kept his composure to slot beyond Morrison to give his side a 2-1 lead at the interval.
Saints could have all but wrapped up the win just four minutes into the second half when McLear collected a weak clearance and with Morrison off his line, the striker’s lob hit the bar before bouncing out.
Motherwell responded with a Robbie Leitch corner that found Ben Hall at the back post but his header dropped wide of target.
Saints found themselves down to ten men when Jaison McGrath was ordered off for a quick-fire double booking. The first was for a cynical, foolish trip on David Ferguson. The second, just a few minutes later, looked a little harsh and more like two players competing for the ball.
It didn’t deter the hosts though and they continued, with their abundance of pace, to look a threat on the counter, particularly via left-sider Morgan who twice raced away clear of the Steelmen rearguard, only to be denied on both occasions by Morrison. Those efforts were sandwiched either side of a low Cadden shot that forced Wilks to parry.
Mackin also had a header flicked towards goal, but it presented little problems for Wilks to pluck out the air.
The extra man eventually started to take it’s toll on Saints as ‘Well started to take control. Leitch had a shot fly high over the bar, sub Jake Hastie’s deflected effort bounced inches wide and when the corner eventually came over, Watt laid it on a plate for Mackin only for the big striker to scoop over from a yard out.
Then, with eight minutes to go, Motherwell levelled things up in controversial and unusual circumstances. Goalkeeper Wilks was adjudged to have held the ball longer than the allowed six seconds. He was booked by referee Grant Irvine and after taking a quick free-kick with Saints having no time to retreat, Dylan Falconer eventually slammed home into an empty net. St Mirren’s players and management team were apoplectic at the call, surrounding the officials amid chaotic scenes.
However, the players on the park quickly regrouped and almost got themselves back in front, only for a low shot to crash into the side-netting. It was a warning the young Claret and Amber men failed to heed though as with five minutes left on the clock, Saints grabbed the winner.
Conlan led his side into another quick counter, and when his low shot was parried out by Morrison, McLear was on hand to tuck home his second of the night, Saint’s third, to wrap up all three points.
Motherwell: Morrison, McMillan, Watt, Ferguson, Hall, Turnbull (Hastie – 67mins), MacLean, R.Leitch, Mackin, Watters (Falconer – 67mins), Cadden
