Cadden & Campbell start for Scotland

Midfielders Allan Campbell & Chris Cadden both started for Scotland U21s against England last night.

Sadly, despite a goal for Cadden, Scott Gemmill’s side went down to a 3-1 defeat at Middlesbrough’s Riverside Stadium.

Allan Campbell, wearing his familiar number 22 shirt, lined up in the middle of the Scots’ midfield for the very first time.

Cadden has been a regular feature for the U21s over the last year, and he grabbed his first Scotland goal on the 79th minute, picking up the ball after good work from Swansea’s Oli McBurnie and slotting home from ten yards out.

England were two to the good by that point, goals from Spurs’ Josh Onomah, and Chelsea’s Tammy Abraham, but when Cadden’s strike reduced the arrears, there was hope of a leveller.

Those were dashed within seconds when Liverpool’s Dominic Solanke tapped in a third from close range to ensure the points stayed in England.

It was a fantastic experience for the two young ‘Well lads, with a third academy graduate, Kilmarnock’s Dom Thomas, making it a hat-trick of starters for the Braidhurst Campus.

Cadden himself was obviously delighted to get his name on the score sheet, but was ultimately disappointed to be part of a losing side.

He said: “It was great to get my first international goal and to get it against England makes it a little more special.

“However, at the end of the day, it doesn’t mean anything as we didn’t get the three points. I would happily trade me goal for the team to have picked up a win.”

Speaking about playing alongside ‘Well teammate Campbell, Cadden added: “I enjoyed playing with him and once again I thought Allan was a credit to himself; he was brilliant and showed what he’s all about.

“It was a good moment for the club and shows just how good a job the youth coaching staff at Motherwell is doing to have Allan, Dom and I in the starting line-up”

Win a Lego replica of Fir Park!

A Lego replica of Fir Park is being raffled off to raise money for the MFC Disabled Supporters Association.

Designed by Chris Smith from “Brickstand”, the model has been anonymously donated to help boost funds to improve the matchday experience for home and away disabled supporters at Fir Park.

Chris builds Lego football stadiums during his free time and is aiming to construct all 92 English league teams and top-flight Scottish grounds – of which he is currently half way through.

A very generous Motherwell fan, who wishes to remain anonymous, has commissioned the Fir Park model which is on display at the club shop.

[pullquote]This is an amazing opportunity for a Well fan to win an incredible piece of Motherwell memorabilia and we are extremely grateful for this donation.[/pullquote]

The draw will be made on Saturday, October 28 with fans getting the chance to buy raffle tickets before every home game.

MFC DSA’s Jillian Gillen said: “This is an amazing opportunity for a Well fan to win an incredible piece of Motherwell memorabilia and we are extremely grateful for this donation.”

“The Lego Fir Park is now on display in the Club Shop and will be there until the draw is made. We would encourage people to pop along to the shop and have a look for themselves as it truly is wonderful.”

You can buy your raffle tickets, which will be on sale at the club shop an hour before kick off each match day ahead of the draw, or alternatively you can email jillian@mfcdsa.com or call Jillian on 07714462869 for tickets.

Tickets have been priced at just £3 for one, or two for £5.

    John Swinburne: 1930-2017

Motherwell FC was today saddened to learn of the passing of former Director and life-long fan, John Swinburne.

John was born in the United States but grew up and was educated in Motherwell, where his love affair with all things Claret and Amber began.

John held a number of roles within Fir Park, including Commercial Manager, before joining the Board of Directors in 2000, where he served with distinction until stepping down in 2015. Amongst other things, John also wrote several historical books about Motherwell FC, many of which are still read and enjoyed to this day.

John enjoyed a long and rewarding life, none more so than when he was elected to the Scottish Parliament back in 2003 on the list vote for Central Scotland, representing the SSCUP, a party he had helped form to represent the interest of senior citizens.

John passed away this morning aged 87 after a short but challenging illness.

Everyone at Motherwell Football Club would like to extend our deepest condolences to John’s family and friends at this sad time.

At the same time, the club remembers a loyal, dedicated, enthusiastic and talented supporter that went over and above for the team he loved.

    Rest in Peace, John.

    Robinson: Important three points

Stephen Robinson admitted that this afternoon’s victory over Partick Thistle is all the more important ahead of the upcoming international break.

And the ‘Well boss hailed his side’s second half performance as they controlled proceedings at Fir Park from the first whistle.

Speaking to MFC TV at full time, Robinson reflected on his sides fourth win in the last five homes games.

[pullquote]It’s always important to go in to the international break with three points because it leaves the club on a high.[/pullquote]

“It’s always important to go in to the international break with three points because it leaves the club on a high,” the Northern Irishman said.

“I thought we started the game really well and after 20 minutes we should have been two or three up and then we just took our foot off the gas slightly.

He added: “We gave them a wee rattle at half time, got them going again and I thought the second half performance was excellent.”
