    Falkirk U20s 0 – 1 Motherwell U20s

Motherwell under 20s returned to Development League action tonight with a 1-0 victory against Falkirk.

Despite being denied from the penalty spot early in the match, Jake Hastie’s 76th minute winner was enough to secure a return to winning ways for the Steelmen.

Manager Stephen Craigan fielded a side including senior players Russell Griffiths, Ellis Plummer, Liam Grimshaw and Ross MacLean at the Falkirk Stadium, whilst also recalling on-loan duo Jack McMillan and Jake Hastie to the starting line-up.

And the latter was presented with a golden opportunity to mark his return to the team with an early goal when a stone wall penalty was awarded by referee Lorraine Watson in the sixth minute.

A push on the goal line denied ‘Well a sure goal before Robbie Mutch denied Hastie from the spot – diving low to his left to palm away the winger’s effort.

Ten minutes later the youngster’s determination nearly robbed the Bairns stopper on the edge of his box, when Hastie closed down his attempted clearance, only to see the ball ricochet out of play at the expense of a throw-in.

Adam Livingstone’s terrific curling effort directly from a freekick was the closest the Steelman came to beating Mutch, with the stopper nowhere near the superb effort, which skimmed the post on it’s way out for a goal kick.

However, it wasn’t the best opportunity of the opening 45.

That fell for James Scott who was played over the top of the Bairns backline in the 32nd minute but couldn’t convert the chance and instead was denied one-on-one by Mutch.

The second half was equally uneventful, although it did include the breakthrough in an otherwise quiet game.

The home side went closest to breaking the deadlock after just a minute of play, with Luca Gasparotto heading goalward from a corner – but Griffiths saved with ease.

Fifteen minutes from time, Motherwell took the lead and, although it was deserved, it was extremely slack from the hosts.

A short ball from Mutch put Liam Henderson under pressure and the alert Hastie was on hand to rob the defender and roll the ball in to an empty net.

It means the Fir Park youngsters have won four out of their six league matches this term, having lost just one, and currently sit three points off Development League leaders Dundee.

Moult wins Ladbrokes Player of the Month

Louis Moult has bagged the Ladbrokes Player of the Month award for September following a scintillating month for the striker.

And the Englishman is the first Steelman to pick up the honour since Michael Higdon back in April 2014 following his five goal haul last month.

Moult started September with an 88th minute goal against Kilmarnock in a 2-0 win for the ‘Well, before following that up with a brace at Easter Road as Stephen Robinson’s men drew 2-2.

Another brace came just five days later in the dramatic quarter-final clash with Aberdeen in the Betfred Cup, including an improvised over-head kick and a thumping finish past Joe Lewis to erupt the Fir Park crowd.

[pullquote]It’s been a good month for me personally, scoring a few goals, and it’s been a good month for the club too.[/pullquote]

And the ‘Well number nine, speaking upon picking up his award, reiterated his desire to focus on the important games ahead.

He said: “It’s been a good month for me personally, scoring a few goals, and it’s been a good month for the club too.

“I’ve been fairly consistent with my performances and I’ve tried to not let anything affect me and the club have helped me in that by playing me more than anything.”

He added: “At the moment I’m not thinking about [the future] and I’ve said it many a time just how much I appreciate the support from the club.”

    Trio of Scotland Youth call-ups

Three ‘Well youngsters are celebrating after being called up by the National side for forthcoming matches.

Academy stars Reece McAlear and Cole Starrs have been named in James Grady’s Under 16s Victory Shield squad.

No other non-Old Firm team has more representatives in the squad, which also has three other Academy players on the standby list.

The tournament will take place in Belfast between the 23rd and 27th of October with the Scots lined up to play Wales, Northern Ireland and the Republic.

Also called up is Jamie Semple, who has been in the 20-man Scotland Under 17s side for the forthcoming UEFA Qualifying Round 2017/18.

[pullquote]We wish all three lads all the very best in their busy schedules and hope they enjoy themselves whilst representing their country.[/pullquote]

Brian McLaughlin’s squad will face a triple-header of games against Andorra, Estonia and Denmark in Tallin later in the month.

Like the Under 16s, ‘Well also has players on the standby list for these important fixtures.

Academy Director Scott Leitch said: “The club have representation at every single level in the Scotland Youth International squads, which is a major honour for Motherwell FC and a continued vindication of the work of the coaching staff and scouts.

“We wish all three lads all the very best in their busy schedules and hope they enjoy themselves whilst representing their country.”

    Under 20s to face Falkirk

Motherwell under-20s return to Development League action tomorrow night with a trip to the Falkirk Stadium.

Stephen Craigan’s youngsters will be keen to return to winning ways following last week’s match postponement and the defeat against Hearts in the week prior.

However, tomorrow’s opposition will be a tough test, with the Bairns currently level on points with the ‘Well having played one more match in the 2017/18 campaign.

It’s been a largely positive start to the season for Craigan and his youngsters, with the 4-2 defeat away to Hearts the only loss in a near perfect first five matches.

If you’re going to the match entry is free, however donation buckets will be available to support Falkirk FC Youth Development if you so choose.

If you’re not making it, you can follow all of the action with live updates on twitter, as well as report, match highlights and reaction online.

    Kick off is at 7pm.

    SRtRC: Fortnight of Action

Welcome to Show Racism the Red Card’s annual Fortnight of Action. Many of you will have seen the campaign within football for many years, the SFA, SPFL, SJFA and its member clubs have been supporting the campaign since it started in Scotland.

In addition to increasing the awareness of SRtRC’s work in Scotland, the Fortnight of Action from 6th – 20th October shows commitment at the highest level of Scottish football to eradicate racism and discrimination of any form from our game.

We believe that it is vital to highlight the anti-racism message at this time of year as it runs alongside Football Against Racism in Europe’s (FARE) Football People Weeks.

All professional clubs will show their support over one weekend on Friday 14th October and Saturday 15th October. Clubs will be united in calling for an end to racism in football and society. Players in over 40 European Countries are involved in similar events as part of FARE network against racism and discrimination.

Show Racism the Red Card has received excellent support from football clubs, football authorities and football fans the length and breadth of Scotland – we would like to take this opportunity to thank you all. We have heard of many instances where supporters have been proactive in promoting the anti-racism message, making it clear that racism and discrimination are not welcome at their club.

We urge fans to continue to support the anti-racism message; it is the responsibility of us all to ensure that it is carried out beyond the Fortnight of Action and beyond the terraces.

Neil Doncaster, Chief Executive of the SPFL said: “Football is a powerful medium to break down barriers and promote tolerance. Our clubs have supported Show Racism the Red Card since season 2003/04 and once again, this united action in support of the campaign sends out the positive message that football is a game to be enjoyed by all.”

Motherwell skipper Carl McHugh added: “Motherwell FC is once again proud to stand beside our fellow clubs to reject all forms of racism, bigotry and hate and to reaffirm our position that football, at Fir Park or anywhere, is for everyone, regardless of race, colour, creed or religion.”

The campaign will continue to speak to all football clubs, the football authorities and the police to eradicate all forms of racist behaviour.

The SPFL, SJFA and its clubs deplore all forms of racism and any racist behaviour will not be tolerated at SPFL or SJFA matches.

Over the past year Show Racism the Red Card has faced major funding difficulties but we strive to continue our work. We are working with grassroots football, community groups, schools, the police and prison service to ensure that going forward Scottish society and Scottish football is fair and inclusive for all.

Football is a sport that is followed by people across the world and football matches should be an enjoyable experience for all, whatever their background. We all have a part to play in challenging racism in football and society.

Cadden & Campbell start for Scotland

Midfielders Allan Campbell & Chris Cadden both started for Scotland U21s against England last night.

Sadly, despite a goal for Cadden, Scott Gemmill’s side went down to a 3-1 defeat at Middlesbrough’s Riverside Stadium.

Allan Campbell, wearing his familiar number 22 shirt, lined up in the middle of the Scots’ midfield for the very first time.

Cadden has been a regular feature for the U21s over the last year, and he grabbed his first Scotland goal on the 79th minute, picking up the ball after good work from Swansea’s Oli McBurnie and slotting home from ten yards out.

England were two to the good by that point, goals from Spurs’ Josh Onomah, and Chelsea’s Tammy Abraham, but when Cadden’s strike reduced the arrears, there was hope of a leveller.

Those were dashed within seconds when Liverpool’s Dominic Solanke tapped in a third from close range to ensure the points stayed in England.

It was a fantastic experience for the two young ‘Well lads, with a third academy graduate, Kilmarnock’s Dom Thomas, making it a hat-trick of starters for the Braidhurst Campus.

Cadden himself was obviously delighted to get his name on the score sheet, but was ultimately disappointed to be part of a losing side.

He said: “It was great to get my first international goal and to get it against England makes it a little more special.

“However, at the end of the day, it doesn’t mean anything as we didn’t get the three points. I would happily trade me goal for the team to have picked up a win.”

Speaking about playing alongside ‘Well teammate Campbell, Cadden added: “I enjoyed playing with him and once again I thought Allan was a credit to himself; he was brilliant and showed what he’s all about.

“It was a good moment for the club and shows just how good a job the youth coaching staff at Motherwell is doing to have Allan, Dom and I in the starting line-up”
