    U20s to face Burntisland Shipyard

Motherwell under 20s will take on Burntisland Shipyard in the third round of the Scottish FA Youth Cup.

The Fir Park youngsters have been drawn as the home side for the fixture, which is set to be played on or before Sunday, October 29th.

Stephen Craigan’s side enjoyed a stellar run last season as they vied to defend the trophy they lifted two season ago, making it all the way to the last four where they were knocked out by eventual winners Celtic.

Shipyard won a dramatic encounter against Livingston to secure progression to the third round, holding out to win 3-2 earlier this month.

Further information regarding this fixture will be announced in due course.

Thomson in charge of Lanarkshire Derby

Referee for Saturday’s league match against Hamilton Accies at the SuperSeal Stadium is Craig Thomson.

The 45-year old takes charge of his second Motherwell fixture of the season, after the official was in charge of the trip to McDiarmid Park earlier this season.

On that afternoon, ‘Well went down to eight men amid controversial circumstances as St Johnstone went on to win 4-1.

Thomson took charge on four occasions last term, which included both the first and last games of the season, starting with a win against Kilmarnock at Rugby Park and ending with a 3-2 loss away to Inverness.

In between those clashes, the official oversaw a 1-1 draw away to Partick Thistle in September and the crushing Scottish Cup defeat against Rangers at Ibrox.

One of the top Scottish referee’s in the game, Thomson has been in charge of fixtures at all levels of the game, including the UEFA Champions League and World Cup Qualifiers.

Of the three matches he refereed in Europe’s premier club competition last season, one match included 2015/16 finalists Atlético Madrid.

His record in charge of the Steelmen is a bit of a mixed bag with 16 wins from 50 matches. There have been 24 defeats and ten draws too.

Not included in that list was the 2007/08 Scottish Cup fourth round replay win against Hearts at Fir Park, when he replaced the injured Stuart Dougal midway through the second-half.

In those games, Motherwell have scored 70 and conceded 77.

171 players have gone into the book, 87 were wearing claret and amber. Up until the Saints clash, seven players had been shown a red card, including former captains Stephen Craigan and Keith Lasley. That total has now surged to ten following the dismissals of Trevor Carson, Carl McHugh and Charles Dunne back in August.

Craig will be ably assisted by Graeme Stewart and Stuart Stevenson; with Craig Napier on fourth official duties.

Craigan: Happy we’re back with a win

Under 20s manager Stephen Craigan was happy to see his side bounce back to winning ways during a tough encounter with Falkirk.

Following last week’s postponed clash with Accies, the youngsters were forced to wait for the chance to bounce back following the defeat to Hearts.

And the Northern Irishman, who was generally pleased, also admitted that his side lacked a cutting edge going forward on a cold evening at the Falkirk Stadium.

[pullquote]Generally we’re pleased to win the game and I thought in the first half our shape got the better of them and we moved the ball well but without a real end product.[/pullquote]

Speaking to MFC TV at full time, Craigan said: “Generally we’re pleased to win the game and I thought in the first half our shape got the better of them and we moved the ball well but without a real end product.

“At times we struggled to get in behind their midfield, we had lots of the ball at the back and were moving it well down the outside of them and we had the penalty miss too.”

He added: “The first half was better than the second half and then it was a mistake from Falkirk which gifted us the game, but I’m pleased we’re back to winning ways.”

    Falkirk U20s 0 – 1 Motherwell U20s

Motherwell under 20s returned to Development League action tonight with a 1-0 victory against Falkirk.

Despite being denied from the penalty spot early in the match, Jake Hastie’s 76th minute winner was enough to secure a return to winning ways for the Steelmen.

Manager Stephen Craigan fielded a side including senior players Russell Griffiths, Ellis Plummer, Liam Grimshaw and Ross MacLean at the Falkirk Stadium, whilst also recalling on-loan duo Jack McMillan and Jake Hastie to the starting line-up.

And the latter was presented with a golden opportunity to mark his return to the team with an early goal when a stone wall penalty was awarded by referee Lorraine Watson in the sixth minute.

A push on the goal line denied ‘Well a sure goal before Robbie Mutch denied Hastie from the spot – diving low to his left to palm away the winger’s effort.

Ten minutes later the youngster’s determination nearly robbed the Bairns stopper on the edge of his box, when Hastie closed down his attempted clearance, only to see the ball ricochet out of play at the expense of a throw-in.

Adam Livingstone’s terrific curling effort directly from a freekick was the closest the Steelman came to beating Mutch, with the stopper nowhere near the superb effort, which skimmed the post on it’s way out for a goal kick.

However, it wasn’t the best opportunity of the opening 45.

That fell for James Scott who was played over the top of the Bairns backline in the 32nd minute but couldn’t convert the chance and instead was denied one-on-one by Mutch.

The second half was equally uneventful, although it did include the breakthrough in an otherwise quiet game.

The home side went closest to breaking the deadlock after just a minute of play, with Luca Gasparotto heading goalward from a corner – but Griffiths saved with ease.

Fifteen minutes from time, Motherwell took the lead and, although it was deserved, it was extremely slack from the hosts.

A short ball from Mutch put Liam Henderson under pressure and the alert Hastie was on hand to rob the defender and roll the ball in to an empty net.

It means the Fir Park youngsters have won four out of their six league matches this term, having lost just one, and currently sit three points off Development League leaders Dundee.

Moult wins Ladbrokes Player of the Month

Louis Moult has bagged the Ladbrokes Player of the Month award for September following a scintillating month for the striker.

And the Englishman is the first Steelman to pick up the honour since Michael Higdon back in April 2014 following his five goal haul last month.

Moult started September with an 88th minute goal against Kilmarnock in a 2-0 win for the ‘Well, before following that up with a brace at Easter Road as Stephen Robinson’s men drew 2-2.

Another brace came just five days later in the dramatic quarter-final clash with Aberdeen in the Betfred Cup, including an improvised over-head kick and a thumping finish past Joe Lewis to erupt the Fir Park crowd.

[pullquote]It’s been a good month for me personally, scoring a few goals, and it’s been a good month for the club too.[/pullquote]

And the ‘Well number nine, speaking upon picking up his award, reiterated his desire to focus on the important games ahead.

He said: “It’s been a good month for me personally, scoring a few goals, and it’s been a good month for the club too.

“I’ve been fairly consistent with my performances and I’ve tried to not let anything affect me and the club have helped me in that by playing me more than anything.”

He added: “At the moment I’m not thinking about [the future] and I’ve said it many a time just how much I appreciate the support from the club.”

    Trio of Scotland Youth call-ups

Three ‘Well youngsters are celebrating after being called up by the National side for forthcoming matches.

Academy stars Reece McAlear and Cole Starrs have been named in James Grady’s Under 16s Victory Shield squad.

No other non-Old Firm team has more representatives in the squad, which also has three other Academy players on the standby list.

The tournament will take place in Belfast between the 23rd and 27th of October with the Scots lined up to play Wales, Northern Ireland and the Republic.

Also called up is Jamie Semple, who has been in the 20-man Scotland Under 17s side for the forthcoming UEFA Qualifying Round 2017/18.

[pullquote]We wish all three lads all the very best in their busy schedules and hope they enjoy themselves whilst representing their country.[/pullquote]

Brian McLaughlin’s squad will face a triple-header of games against Andorra, Estonia and Denmark in Tallin later in the month.

Like the Under 16s, ‘Well also has players on the standby list for these important fixtures.

Academy Director Scott Leitch said: “The club have representation at every single level in the Scotland Youth International squads, which is a major honour for Motherwell FC and a continued vindication of the work of the coaching staff and scouts.

“We wish all three lads all the very best in their busy schedules and hope they enjoy themselves whilst representing their country.”

In addition to increasing the awareness of SRtRC’s work in Scotland, the Fortnight of Action from 6th – 20th October shows commitment at the highest level of Scottish football to eradicate racism and discrimination of any form from our game.

We believe that it is vital to highlight the anti-racism message at this time of year as it runs alongside Football Against Racism in Europe’s (FARE) Football People Weeks.

All professional clubs will show their support over one weekend on Friday 14th October and Saturday 15th October. Clubs will be united in calling for an end to racism in football and society. We urge fans to continue to support the anti-racism message; it is the responsibility of us all to ensure that it is carried out beyond the Fortnight of Action and beyond the terraces.

Neil Doncaster, Chief Executive of the SPFL said: “Football is a powerful medium to break down barriers and promote tolerance. Our clubs have supported Show Racism the Red Card since season 2003/04 and once again, this united action in support of the campaign sends out the positive message that football is a game to be enjoyed by all.”
