    Build-up: Hamilton Accies

Domestic football returns this weekend and the Steelmen get back to action with the first Lanarkshire derby of the 2017/18 campaign.

Stephen Robinson’s side will be keen to get back in to the swing of things following the international break, with a chance to pick up their 11th victory in 15 games.

After the narrow loss to Aberdeen, the Fir Parkers bounced back to head in to the break on the back of a 3-0 victory over Partick Thistle.

And the derby is set to be an intriguing fixture, given that Hamilton will be hungry to put to bed a run of five games without a win.

Martin Canning’s side pose a tough, physical threat for the ‘Well, and the artificial surface will be a fairly new challenge for some of the Steelmen’s new recruits.

One of those who is new and ready for Saturday’s clash is Peter Hartley, who has impressed since his summer arrival.

Speaking to the broadcast press, Hartley discussed the fixture ahead, and his experience of derby clashes throughout his career so far.

“I’ve never [played on an artificial surface], I don’t think there’s any in England – maybe some in the Conference but I’ve never played at that level,” he admitted. “I’ve got no problems though, body-wise or anything, so I can easily get through games on it.”

He added: “I don’t think we change the way we play, I think we make them make mistakes on the surface if anything.

[pullquote]You can tell we’ve got an identity as a team but obviously we’re not getting carried away because we’ve not reached our full potential and there’s still a lot more to come from us as a team.[/pullquote]

“You can tell we’ve got an identity as a team but obviously we’re not getting carried away because we’ve not reached our full potential and there’s still a lot more to come from us as a team.”

“I don’t read the papers much but I was hearing people say that Partick weren’t at the races, Kilmarnock weren’t at the races and Aberdeen weren’t quite either but it’s not them not being at the races it’s us making them look average with what we do.”

‘Well boss Stephen Robinson has a near full-strength squad to pick from, with George Newell out through injury and Deimantas Petravičius nearing his full return to fitness.

And the Northern Irishman insists that his side won’t change for any opposition as the Steelmen prepare for the first Lanarkshire Derby of the season.

The ‘Well boss looked ahead to this weekend’s clash at the SuperSeal Stadium and admitted Hamilton will be tough opponents.

However, following a strong run of games, the Fir Park manager believes his side will match Accies hard work on Saturday.

[pullquote]We’re obviously well aware of the other teams threats but the pitch does make a difference to it and [Hamilton] are used to playing on it.[/pullquote]

He said: “We don’t change the way we play and we won’t change the way we play for anybody and we’ve been quite successful with that.

“We’re obviously well aware of the other teams threats but the pitch does make a difference to it and [Hamilton] are used to playing on it.”

He added: “We’ve been training on astroturf all week though so it’s not an excuse. They’ve been very good at what they do Hamilton but we’ll match them.”

Martin Canning could be without a number of key men as Ali Crawford, Gary Woods, Michael Devlin, Grant Gillespie, Georgios Sarris and David Templeton could all be doubts. Darian MacKinnon makes his return from suspension for the Accies.

PLEASE NOTE: Tickets must be purchased from the Fir Park ticket office, open 9am – 4pm today (Friday, October 13th) and tomorrow (Saturday, October 14th) from 9am – 1pm. Tickets are not available on the gate.

Hartley: More to come from us

‘Well defender Peter Hartley believes there is still more to come from the Steelmen despite a strong start to the season.

The Englishman, who is preparing for his first Lanarkshire derby, hailed the Fir Parkers performances following a string of good results.

And, echoing the though of Stephen Robinson, the centre back insisted that Motherwell won’t go about changing their approach to games due to the opposition.

[pullquote]We’ve got an identity as a team but obviously we’re not getting carried away because we’ve not reached our full potential and there’s still a lot more to come from us as a team.[/pullquote]

    U20s to face Burntisland Shipyard

Motherwell under 20s will take on Burntisland Shipyard in the third round of the Scottish FA Youth Cup.

The Fir Park youngsters have been drawn as the home side for the fixture, which is set to be played on or before Sunday, October 29th.

Stephen Craigan’s side enjoyed a stellar run last season as they vied to defend the trophy they lifted two season ago, making it all the way to the last four where they were knocked out by eventual winners Celtic.

Shipyard won a dramatic encounter against Livingston to secure progression to the third round, holding out to win 3-2 earlier this month.

Further information regarding this fixture will be announced in due course.

Thomson in charge of Lanarkshire Derby

Referee for Saturday’s league match against Hamilton Accies at the SuperSeal Stadium is Craig Thomson.

The 45-year old takes charge of his second Motherwell fixture of the season, after the official was in charge of the trip to McDiarmid Park earlier this season.

On that afternoon, ‘Well went down to eight men amid controversial circumstances as St Johnstone went on to win 4-1.

Thomson took charge on four occasions last term, which included both the first and last games of the season, starting with a win against Kilmarnock at Rugby Park and ending with a 3-2 loss away to Inverness.

In between those clashes, the official oversaw a 1-1 draw away to Partick Thistle in September and the crushing Scottish Cup defeat against Rangers at Ibrox.

One of the top Scottish referee’s in the game, Thomson has been in charge of fixtures at all levels of the game, including the UEFA Champions League and World Cup Qualifiers.

Of the three matches he refereed in Europe’s premier club competition last season, one match included 2015/16 finalists Atlético Madrid.

His record in charge of the Steelmen is a bit of a mixed bag with 16 wins from 50 matches. There have been 24 defeats and ten draws too.

Not included in that list was the 2007/08 Scottish Cup fourth round replay win against Hearts at Fir Park, when he replaced the injured Stuart Dougal midway through the second-half.

In those games, Motherwell have scored 70 and conceded 77.

171 players have gone into the book, 87 were wearing claret and amber. Up until the Saints clash, seven players had been shown a red card, including former captains Stephen Craigan and Keith Lasley. That total has now surged to ten following the dismissals of Trevor Carson, Carl McHugh and Charles Dunne back in August.

Craig will be ably assisted by Graeme Stewart and Stuart Stevenson; with Craig Napier on fourth official duties.

Craigan: Happy we’re back with a win

Under 20s manager Stephen Craigan was happy to see his side bounce back to winning ways during a tough encounter with Falkirk.

Following last week’s postponed clash with Accies, the youngsters were forced to wait for the chance to bounce back following the defeat to Hearts.

And the Northern Irishman, who was generally pleased, also admitted that his side lacked a cutting edge going forward on a cold evening at the Falkirk Stadium.

[pullquote]Generally we’re pleased to win the game and I thought in the first half our shape got the better of them and we moved the ball well but without a real end product.[/pullquote]

Speaking to MFC TV at full time, Craigan said: “Generally we’re pleased to win the game and I thought in the first half our shape got the better of them and we moved the ball well but without a real end product.

“At times we struggled to get in behind their midfield, we had lots of the ball at the back and were moving it well down the outside of them and we had the penalty miss too.”

He added: “The first half was better than the second half and then it was a mistake from Falkirk which gifted us the game, but I’m pleased we’re back to winning ways.”
