    Grant Russell at Tynecastle

Motherwell showed plenty endeavour but ultimately came up short as they lost out 1-0 to Hearts at Tynecastle in the Ladbrokes Premiership.

Stephen Robinson rang the changes through the enforced absences of Trevor Carson, Peter Hartley and Louis Moult. Russell Griffiths and Alex Fisher were the direct replacements, while Carl McHugh was also reinstated to the team but at centre back. Elliot Frear replaced Craig Tanner.

The Steelmen were also forced to go without a substitute goalkeeper as league rules blocked the return of Peter Morrison, who is on loan at Clyde.

The first half as a contest was slow to get going, with neither side fully able to get a grip on the game. Chris Cadden’s shot from outside the area was the first 17 minutes in, but it was safely gathered by Jon McLaughlin.

Ten minutes later, the visitors had the first clear chance of the game. Frear beat two men on the left flank to drive inside, but his low shot from the edge of the box was straight at the ‘keeper.

Immediately up the other end, Hearts worked a chance from a corner. McHugh’s slip meant he could only half clear, but Kyle Lafferty steered the ball wide from 12 yards.

The hosts then passed up a golden chance to open the scoring. A long ball to the back post was met on the volley by an unmarked Moore, but his shot from an angle was high and over the bar.

Their pressure then told after 38 minutes. Campbell appeared to be fouled as he tried to play his way out of midfield, with the ball then being played in to Lafferty. The Northern Irishman played his way past Kipre and McHugh before turning the ball past Griffiths.

Fisher, who picked up a heavy blow to his cheek in the first half, was placed at the break by Craig Tanner. Gael Bigirimana had earlier replaced Chris Cadden through injury.

Motherwell had the first chance of the second half. Tanner’s corner was met by Ryan Bowman on the penalty spot, but his header under pressure went over the bar.

The Steelmen continued to threaten. Tanner’s free kick from 25 yards out took a deflection which briefly troubled McLaughlin, and Petravicius was introduced to add yet more pace in attack.

Tanner then had another free kick chance with 65 minutes gone. This time 30 yards out, to the left of goal, his dinked effort to the back post was met by McHugh but he was adjudged to be offside, with Lafferty also blocking the chance.

The chances kept on coming. And the unlikely next goal threat was Kipre. Winning a loose ball in midfield, the big centre half had options but elected to take a drive at goal from 20 yards, and only narrowly put the ball past the top of the post.

Motherwell kept on pushing to try and make something from a positive second half and send the 691 fans who made the trip to Gorgie home happy.

But despite plenty of the ball in the closing stages, Robinson’s men couldn’t create the clear opportunity needed to give them a shot at taking a deserved point.

Motherwell: Griffiths; Tait, Kipre, McHugh, Dunne, Frear; Rose (Petravicius 62), Cadden (Bigirimana 36), Campbell; Bowman, Fisher (Tanner 45).

Hearts: McLaughlin; Randall, Berra, Souttar, Smith; Walker (Milinkovic 30, Stockton 88), Djoum (Callachan 63), Buaben, Cowie, Moore; Lafferty.

    Build-up: Hearts

Motherwell travel to the newly refurbished Tynecastle to take on Hearts in the Ladbrokes Premiership on Saturday.

And following last week’s 5-1 loss against Celtic, the Steelmen will head for the capital in a search for a return to winning ways.

Despite the heavy defeat, ‘Well’s recent league form makes for impressive reading, with four points taken from a trip to Pittodrie and a clash with an unbeaten Celtic side.

That leaves Stephen Robinson’s men fifth in the table – five points ahead of Craig Levein’s Hearts in sixth.

And while tomorrow’s hosts have failed to notch a victory since returning home, they are also yet to be defeated.

‘Well boss Robinson knows his side will be in for a tough game, but is equally confident in his squad, who managed to notch a 2-1 victory the last time the two sides met.

[pullquote]They haven’t won at Tynecastle yet, but they haven’t lost either so I think while there’s stuff being made of their form we have to remember they haven’t lost there yet.[/pullquote]

“It’ll be a tough, tough game, there will be a big crowd – but we want to get back to winning ways.

“We’re confident and we’ve had decent league form in the last three games so there’s no reason why we can’t take it forward.”

Stephen Robinson will be without Louis Moult and Peter Hartley, who has suffered a short-term injury to his foot, whilst Trevor Carson faces a late fitness test.

For Charles Dunne, this weekend poses a good opportunity for the Steelmen to get back to winning form.

The ‘Well defender has enjoyed a strong start to the season for the Fir Parkers and is confident of a response from the heavy loss to Celtic.

Speaking to the broadcast press this morning, Dunne reflected on a positive week of training ahead of tomorrow’s clash with Hearts.

“It’s another game, hopefully now we can get back on track and back to winning ways,” the 24-year-old said.

[pullquote]Everyone’s been positive this week, we’re a positive bunch anyway, and the manager is always making sure of that so everyone has been good in training.[/pullquote]

“Everyone’s been positive this week, we’re a positive bunch anyway, and the manager is always making sure of that so everyone has been good in training.”

He added: “We’re confident in every game and everyone wrote us off at the start of the season and look what we’ve done already so we just need to keep going.”

Hearts will be without Jamie Brandon through suspension, whilst Aaron Hughes faces a late fitness test for the Jambo’s.

    Dunne: Everyone feels positive

Charles Dunne has his sights set on a return to winning ways as the Steelmen prepare for a trip to Tynecastle.

The ‘Well defender has enjoyed a strong start to the season for the Fir Parkers and insists that him and his teammates will be eyeing a return to form after a heavy loss to Celtic.

Speaking to the broadcast press this morning, Dunne reflected on a positive week of training ahead of tomorrow’s clash with Hearts.

Robinson: We’ll be in for a tough game

‘Well boss Stephen Robinson knows his side will be in for a tough game this weekend, but is confident in his squad.

The Northern Irishman’s side travel to Edinburgh to take on Hearts at a newly refurbished Tynecastle Park.

And the hosts, who are undefeated at home this season, will make for a difficult game for the Steelmen in the Ladbrokes Premiership.

[pullquote]We’re confident and we’ve had decent league form in the last three games so there’s no reason why we can’t take it forward.[/pullquote]

Robinson said: “They haven’t won at Tynecastle yet, but they haven’t lost either so I think while there’s stuff being made of their form we have to remember they haven’t lost there yet.”

The Steelmen will be without Louis Moult and Peter Hartley for the trip east because of respective hamstring and foot injuries.

Dallas in the middle for Tynecastle trip

Referee for Saturday’s Ladbrokes Premiership clash with Hearts at Tynecastle is Andrew Dallas.

It will be Andrew’s first Motherwell game of the season, after the 34-year-old took charge on three occasions last term.

The first was a goalless draw against Dundee before a 2-0 win over Partick Thistle in November.

His most recent ‘Well appointment was in this very fixture, meaning Dallas has officiated two consecutive Motherwell/Hearts clashes and three in three seasons.

The previous game, which was played at Fir Park, ended 3-0 in favour of this weekend’s opponents. The Scot also oversaw a huge 1-0 victory for Mark McGhee’s side against Hearts at Tynecastle in the 2015/16 season.

With Hearts just one spot above the ‘Well before that game, it was a massive win in solidifying fifth spot as the season was coming to a close.

Son of famous referee Hugh Dallas, Andrew takes charge of his sixth Motherwell game today.

So far he has dished out twenty-two yellow cards and one red, when Carl McHugh was sent for an early bath against Hearts back in February. In total, Dallas has booked ten Motherwell players.

He will be assisted by Graeme Stewart and Stuart Hodge with Alan Newlands on Fourth Official duties.

TV: Highlights from Paisley 2021 Stadium

The best of the action from Paisley as Deimantas Petravicius’ late penalty gave Stephen Craigan’s men a 1-0 win over St Mirren.

  • Archive

    St Mirren U20s 0 – 1 Motherwell U20s

Motherwell under-20s returned to winning ways with a 1-0 win against St Mirren at the Paisley 2021 stadium.

Stephen Craigan named five first-team players in his starting eleven, including Gaël Bigirimana, Alex Fisher, Deimantas Petravičius and Stevie Hammell. Ellis Plummer also started but was forced off after half an hour.

It was a fairly uneventful evening in Paisley, with Craigan’s side controlling most of the ball and making most of the chances but failing to find the breakthrough in the opening 45.

Petravičius should have put his side in front when he broke through one-on-one, but a heavy touch afforded Ross Stewart the chance to smother the danger.

Ten minutes before the break Fisher went close too, sending a curling, left-footed effort narrowly over the bar from outside the box.

Craigan made a change at half time, replacing Liam Brown with striker Jamie Semple, as the Northern Irishman looked to find the breakthrough in the Development League encounter.

And just before the hour mark ‘Well had the ball in the back of the net through Fisher. The Englishman turned the ball beyond Stewart only to be denied by the linesman’s flag.

Despite hardly threatening the ‘Well goal, the home side nearly took the lead in the 77th minute but O’Keefe was denied by a phenomenal save from PJ Morrison to keep the game goalless.

Down the other end of the park, and with just seven minutes to go, Petravicius was hacked to the deck inside the box leaving no doubt in the referee’s mind who pointed to the spot.

The Lithuanian dusted himself, stepped up and thundered his spot kick perfectly in to the top corner.

It sealed all three points as ‘Well went close again through Fisher in the last minute, but held on for the narrow win.
