    Rangers 2 – 0 Motherwell

    [tab:Match report]

    Phil McGhee at Ibrox

Motherwell slipped to another away defeat in a pretty even affair where the lack of a cutting edge in front of goal paid dear.

The Fir Parkers created two great chances at either end of a tame first half but Craig Tanner failed to make them count. The visitors then paid the price as Rangers grabbed a second half double.

Although a few players were carrying injuries, ‘Well made only two changes from Saturday. Andy Rose replaced Chris Cadden, while Alex Fisher was given the nod in favour of Ryan Bowman.

Within 60 seconds, Fisher’s headed flick sent Tanner through on Wes Foderingham. Perhaps toying with the idea of lobbing the advancing ‘keeper, the striker then shot straight at the Ibrox stopper and the chance to put immediate pressure on the home side was gone.

The Steelmen maintained their positive start and clever footwork from Tanner found space for Richard Tait to cross low towards the six yard area. But Bruno Alves reacted quickly to nip in front of Fisher and clear the danger.

At the other end, Trevor Carson had to stand strong to beat away a thumping drive from Eduardo Herrera as Gers began to find their way towards the visitors’ goal.

‘Well’s injury woes continued after 19 minutes when Carl McHugh went to ground holding his head and, after a quick check from the physio, was led off the pitch with Allan Campbell taking over the captain’s deep midfield role.

Careless play five minutes later almost cost ‘Well. Having lost possession near the home corner flag, they allowed Rangers to break quickly to the other end. But Declan John’s low left foot shot was comfortably held by Carson.

At this stage, Rangers’ play was hardly convincing and a series of needless fouls from the Ibrox men provided Tanner with the opportunity to deliver some inviting free kicks into the home goalmouth but again nobody could produce the killer touch.

On the stroke of half-time, an astute back healer from Richard Tait sent Tanner in behind the home defence and although he guided his low angled drive beyond Foderingham, the ball sped narrowly beyond the keeper’s right hand post.

With neither team on top, a needlessly conceded corner led to Rangers’ opening goal 10 minutes into the second half.

Kranjcar’s delivery eventually found its way to Wilson on the other side of the box, and the central defender’s fierce shot flashed high past Carson and into the far corner of the net to give the home side the lead.

Determined to take something from the game, Bowman replaced Andy Rose as ‘Well went with three up front.

However, it took a fabulous double save from Carson in the 69th minute to keep his side in the game. The ‘Well ‘keeper spread himself to block Alfredo Morelos, before quickly recovering to do likewise to Jamie Barjonas’ low drive.

After 74 minutes, ‘Well came within a metre of an equaliser. Tanner made space on the right before sending in a cross which Fisher stooped to meet only to head the ball narrowly past the post.

A minute later Carson and his team mates were beaten when Gers grabbed a second and decisive goal. While the Fir Park players disputed a throw in, the ball was played through to Morelos, who checked he was onside before slamming the ball into the net and wrap up the points.

Motherwell: Carson; Tait, Kipre, Hartley, Dunne; McHugh (Campbell 20), Grimshaw, Rose (Bowman 62), Bigirimana; Tanner, Fisher (Newell 78).

Subs not used: Xenodochov, Hammell, MacLean, Turnbull.

    Preview: Rangers v Motherwell

Motherwell play their penultimate match before the winter break on Wednesday with a trip to face Rangers.

The Steelmen won the last encounter between the two sides, memorably seeing off the Light Blues 2-0 at Hampden in the Betfred Cup semi final.

Manager Stephen Robinson has an impressive record against Rangers during his time in charge at Fir Park and, after ending a run of defeats with a draw against Dundee at the weekend, says his side are feeling good about the task ahead.

“We’re confident because we’ve put an end to a run of defeats and now have a desire to get back in to the swing of winning,” he said.

[pullquote]But Rangers will be tough opponents for us this week and with three games in quick succession it’ll be important to try and come through the festive period with as few injuries as possible.[/pullquote]

“I was extremely proud of my players on Saturday because we had to battle through the game with ten men for long periods – but every single one of them stepped up to the plate when it really mattered.”

Louis Moult will again be absent for the Steelmen but Trevor Carson is expected to be fit, as he continues to manage a shoulder injury.

Rangers have Ryan Jack back from suspension but are without Jak Alnwick, Graham Dorrans, Kenny Miller and Jordan Rossiter.

    Robinson: We’re feeling confident

Motherwell boss Stephen Robinson is feeling confident ahead of his side’s trip to Ibrox.

The Northern Irishman has an impressive record against Rangers and, following a hard fought draw against Dundee, believes his side can go on to pick up some important points in the final games of 2017.

‘Well face up to Graeme Murty’s Ibrox side before a crucial Lanarkshire derby and Robinson is eyeing a strong end to the year.

“We’re confident because we’ve put an end to a run of defeats and now have a desire to get back in to the swing of winning,” he said.

“But Rangers will be tough opponents for us this week and with three games in quick succession it’ll be important to try and come through the festive period with as few injuries as possible.”

[pullquote]I was extremely proud of my players on Saturday because we had to battle through the game with ten men for long periods – but every single one of them stepped up to the plate when it really mattered.[/pullquote]

“With a few fresh injuries off the back of that game it’s frustrating for me as a manager because we had a run of games without key players.

“So in many ways I feel the January break is coming at a good time, it will allow us to refresh our minds and our bodies after a busy first half of the season.”

    Robinson: We showed great desire

‘Well boss Stephen Robinson hailed the hard work of his players as they battled for a point at Fir Park.

A penalty from Craig Tanner cancelled out an incredible strike from Paul McGowan on a windy afternoon.

And in a post-match interview with MFC TV, Robinson reflected on a much needed point following a run of defeats.

[pullquote]We got back in to the game, showed great character and scored the penalty, then from there it was just pure desire and determination to make sure we seen the game out.[/pullquote]

He said: “Even with Elliott hobbling about we got back in to the game, showed great character and scored the penalty, then from there it was just pure desire and determination to make sure we seen the game out.

“The back four were magnificent today and I thought Charles Dunne was absolutely outstanding, probably the best game he’s had for the club.”

He added: “The midfield battled and scrapped the whole way through and they ran themselves in to the ground and I can’t ask for any more from the ten that were on the pitch.”

Mixed Zone: Players reflect on Dundee

Injuries dogged Motherwell’s performance at home to Dundee but the team battled on to claim a point.

Here’s what the players had to say after the match at Fir Park.

Trevor Carson: “A point against Dundee doesn’t look that glamorous but with everything that went against us [with injuries], we had the walking wounded on the pitch.

“On the back of four defeats, a point in the circumstances has left a positive atmosphere in there.”

Craig Tanner: “At the start of the game we wanted all three points, as you would against anyone.

“We were playing with eight or nine men towards the end of the game. Trevor Carson and Peter Hartley have went through the pain barrier for us today.”

Ryan Bowman: “Certain boys that stayed on… it just shows what it means to them. Digging in for each other and getting the point.”
