Motherwell hit five in Darlington win

Motherwell continued their pre-season preparations with a 5-1 win over Darlington.

Danny Johnson bagged his second goal in as many friendlies as the Steelmen stormed to a 2-0 lead within seven minutes.

Cédric Kipré’s opener from inside the six-yard box was followed up by Johnson’s stunning volley at Blackwell Meadows, as ‘Well asserted their control over the National League North opposition.

Allan Campbell made it three before half time with a neat finish on the bounce, placing the ball beyond Maddison in to the side of the net.

The hosts pulled one back thanks to a neat finish from Harvey Saunders, who got the better of Aaron Taylor-Sinclair before prodding neatly past Trevor Carson eight minutes after the restart.

Stephen Robinson made a number of changes midway through the second half, with 17-year-old James Scott among those to be introduced.

Ryan Bowman capped off 90 minutes with a neat lob made it 4-1 to the Fir Parkers. The striker latched on to Carl McHugh’s defensive header which looped over the Darlington defence before being helped on by the English striker from eight yards.

Youngster Scott wrapped up proceedings with just seconds to go, cutting in from the left at pace and fizzing a low effort in to the far corner.

Up next for the Steelmen is Dunfermline on Thursday, as Robinson’s men look to continue their strong pre-season form.

Jake Hastie loaned to Alloa Athletic

Jake Hastie loaned to Alloa Athletic

Jake Hastie will spend the first half of the 2018/19 season on loan with Alloa Athletic.

The young forward will link up with the Ladbrokes Championship side until January, as he continues his development.

The 19-year-old, who has played for Motherwell’s first team on three occasions, spent last campaign on loan at Airdrieonians.

Also a member of Stephen Craigan’s Under 20s squad, Hastie made 32 appearances for the Diamonds, scoring three goals.

“This is another good opportunity for Jake to get games under his belt,” manager Stephen Robinson said of the move.

“Having spent time with us in Ireland in pre season and impressed, it’s important he gets playing time.

“It’s also a new challenge for him stepping up to a higher division. We will continue to monitor his progress and hope Jake performs well in the Championship.”

    Academy receives Well Society donation

The Well Society have made a generous £5,000 donation to the Motherwell Football Club academy.

The funds, which will go towards supporting a number of areas of the academy, have been gathered as a result of numerous pledges from the society’s members.

Academy director Steven Hammell believes it will go a long way. “It will help us everywhere, we’re just trying to improve every area we can,” he said.

“We’re improving sports science, video analysis, day-to-day equipment and facilities too. We’re just trying to create better players, but also better young people as well.”

Joint chair of the Well Society, Douglas Dickie, says that this donation is an example of the good that can come from fan support, and is urging for more of the same.

“We do support the club, we integrate with the club and are supporting it financially and just giving it any support we can,” he said.

“We now see where this money is going and it’s not going in to a black hole. As owners of the club, this money is going directly in to the club in order to secure the future.”
