    Reserves beat Dundee in cup

    Reserves beat Dundee in cup

Motherwell Reserves produced an assured display as they defeated Dundee 3-1 in group D of the Reserve Cup on Tuesday afternoon.

Stephen Craigan made a late change to his team, replacing Akeal Rehman with Neil McLaughlin in the starting eleven. The Northern Irishman also named Conor Sammon in his side due to the forward being ineligible to play against parent club Hearts on Saturday, and the experienced striker nearly made an immediate impact.

Charging down Dee stopper Samuel Jackson inside the opening five minutes, the Irishman’s lunging block looked set to turn the ball home, but some wicked spin denied the opener and allowed the keeper to gather without too much trouble.

He had a lot more to do in the 20th minute though, producing a fine stop to keep the scoreline level at Forthbank Stadium. James Scott, partnering Sammon up front, showed fine composure to shift the ball on to his left foot before firing an effort towards the roof of the net, only to see it tipped on to the crossbar.

Shortly after though, the Colts took the lead. Captain Barry Maguire burst in to the box, but instead of going for goal, showed terrific composure to turn and tee up the more central Neil McLaughlin, who slid the ball home from just inside the box with a very neat finish.

Despite controlling much of the first half, the second got off to a poor start when an aimless cross was sent in to the box and looked set to be gathered by Rohan Ferguson. However, the keeper made a rare mistake by his high standards, allowing the ball to slip from his grasp before seeing it be prodded in to an empty net by Dee striker Matthew Henvey.

Just after the hour mark, Colts boss Craigan made his first change of the afternoon, calling on Jamie Semple to replace goalcorer McLaughlin. And within minutes, the decision paid off as Semple put the Fir Park side 2-1 up.

Ghosting in at the back post, the youngster turned home a terrific cross towards the back post with his knee after the flight of the ball was misjudged by the Dundee defence. Semple showed terrific reactions to get enough on the ball to turn it inside the post and regain control of the Reserve Cup tie.

With just minutes remaining of the group D fixture, Alfredo Agyeman did terrifically well to beat his man in the box before being bundled to the deck. The referee had no doubts, pointing to the spot immediately. Sammon stepped up and confidently dispatched the spot kick, sending Jackson the wrong way and wrapping up proceedings in Stirling.

Colts drawn with Sligo in Irn-Bru Cup

Motherwell’s colts side will play Sligo Rovers in the third round of the 2018/19 IRN-BRU Cup.

Stephen Craigan’s young team will take on the Irish opponents at home on the weekend of 13 and 14 October.

The youngsters have already defeated East Stirlingshire and Dundee Colts in this season’s competition, becoming only the second-ever colts team to reach the third round stage.

Sligo Rovers defeated Livingston’s colts team 4-1 in their second round match last weekend.

Reserves in cup action on Tuesday

Stephen Craigan’s reserve side are back in action on Tuesday as they come face to face with Dundee again.

With the two clubs’ Colts teams having faced last week in the IRN-BRU Cup, a clash in the newly-formed SPFL Reserve Cup lies in wait next.

Kick off at Forthbank Stadium in Stirling is at 2pm.

    How the Reserve Cup works

Motherwell are in a five-team group with Queen of the South, Dundee, Dunfermline Athletic and Morton. There are three other groups, all consisting of four teams.

The four group winners progress to the semi finals, which will be played on 25 February 2019.

As is the case in the Betfred Cup, group games which finish in a draw will go to penalties, with a bonus point on offer for the winners.

    Women record biggest win

    Women record biggest win

Motherwell handed new boss Donald Jennow the perfect start as they recorded their biggest victory of the season, beating Central Girls 9-0 at Braidhurst.

Sammy Hare bagged four goals and Suzanne Mulvey a hat-trick, while Hayley Cunningham netted from the spot and Megan Burns added her name to scoresheet with a trademark long range strike.

It was a highly impressive display from the women of steel, who showed no signs of taking their foot off the gas despite having secured the SWPL 2 title with five games of the season remaining.

Hare opened the scoring within the first three minutes, Cunningham’s corner was only cleared as far as Mulvey who did well to turn her market and deliver the perfect cross for her strike partner to turn home from close range.

It was one way traffic towards the Central goal and on the 10 minute mark, Hare doubled her tally and Motherwell’s advantage.

Cunningham’s cross was parried out by Sarah King, but only as far as Hare who was left with the simple task of knocking the ball into the empty net.

The visitors had struggled to settle into the game but did offer a rare threat on the counter attack and Kennedy almost reduced the deficit before Motherwell struck for the third time inside the opening half hour.

Clare Johnstone in the ‘Well goal started the move with a smart kick out to Kirsty McLaughlin. The midfielder split the visiting defence with a superb pass to skipper Mulvey who drove forward before finishing in her usual composed fashion.

Five minutes later Hare completed her hat-trick, McLaughlin again played a pivotal role in the build-up and the striker calmly slotted the ball low into the net.

The hosts took a 4-0 lead into the interval and they made a blistering start to the second 45 – netting twice within three minutes of the restart.

Firstly, Cerys Gilbride brought down Mulvey allowing Cunningham to drill home the resulting penalty and Mulvey would then add her second goal of the match converting the rebound after King had kept out Hare’s initial effort.

Mulvey, Cunningham, McLaughlin and Hare all passed up opportunities before the seventh goal eventually arrived just before the hour mark.

Kerry Montgomery and Cunningham linked well down the right and when the ball reached the penalty area, it was Hare who yet again was there to turn the ball home.

Hare is enjoying a quite remarkable run of form in front of goal and has now netted 12 times in her last four appearances, taking her total to 20 for the season.

Despite having a seven-goal lead, Motherwell continued to look to add to their advantage and with 20 minutes remaining, Mulvey would complete her hat-trick when she nodded in McLaughlin’s pin-point cross.

The final goal of the game came with 11 minutes remaining, as Burns blasted home from range after a mix up in the Central defence.

Incredibly, Burns’ goal brings Motherwell to 77 in 17 league fixtures this term, with a positive goal difference of 62.

It also completed a dominant display from Jennow’s side that will set them up nicely for next Sunday’s big SSE Scottish Women’s Cup quarter final clash with St Johnstone at McDiarmid Park.

Aubameyang denies Bigi a winning return

Aubameyang denies Bigi a winning return

A late Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang leveller for Gabon denied Gäel Bigirimana’s Burundi all three points in their African Cup of Nations Group C qualifier.

Bigirimana, earning only his second cap for the country of his birth after a three-year absence, was named in the starting line-up for the match in the Stade De L’Amitié.

The Swallows took the lead after 38 minutes, Stoke City’s Saido Berahino scoring on his full international debut, holding off a handful of challenges before smashing low under the keeper at his near post.

It looked like it was going to stay that way until the Arsenal striker grabbed a point for the hosts just nine minutes from time.

The result leaves Burundi on four points after two games. They face a crucial double header against Mali next month. A win in both will have them in pole position for a spot at the 2019 tournament, which takes place in Cameroon next June.

Elsewhere, Trevor Carson had to be content with a place amongst the substitutes as Northern Ireland lost 2-1 at home to Bosnia-Herzegovina in the UEFA Nations Cup.

Very much against the run of play, the Bosnians took the lead through Dynamo Dresden winger Haris Duljević.

The hosts continued to dominate, but a mix-up between Craig Cathcart and keeper Bailey Peacock-Farrell allowed Elvis Sarić to nip and double the visitor’s advantage midway through the second half.

Will Grigg did reduce the arrears in stoppage time, but it finished in defeat for Michael O’Neill’s side.

Manager using break to make improvements

Stephen Robinson says the international break hasn’t been wasted at Motherwell, with the manager using the time to make improvements with the team on the training ground.

The squad worked Tuesday to Friday this week in the absence of a weekend fixture, but there was no chance the time would be used to relax.

“It’s a chance to work on things we can be better at,” he said.

“The attitudes around the place are great and everyone keeps pushing and pushing themselves.”

Curtis Main: The hard work continues

Curtis Main is enjoying the continued hard work going on in training, despite the break from action for internationals.

The Englishman, who is desperate for the fixtures to keep on coming, says there has been no let up at Fir Park, despite the lack of a weekend fixture.

“It’s been an intense week and the manager is driving that,” he said. “He doesn’t want us to take our foot off the gas even though there’s a break.”
