Women’s coach relishing cup final challenge

Motherwell assistant boss Greg Harrison says reaching the SSE Scottish Women’s Cup final has rounded off a dream start to his time at the club.

Donald Jennow brought Harrison to Fir Park following his appointment as head coach in August.

Since his arrival, the women of steel have negotiated their quarter-final tie with St Johnstone and then recorded a superb 3-1 victory over Spartans to set up a meeting with Hibs in the final at Firhill on 4 November.

“I couldn’t have written this script,” he said. “I came in after the league was already won, so the focus was set on the cup as well as breaking records as a team and individually.

“It has been a difficult run to the final, St Johnstone gave us a very tough game in Perth and then obviously we had to then beat top flight opposition in the semi final.

“I’m sure I speak on behalf of all the coaching staff when I say we are all so excited by the challenge.

“Now our task is to provide the players with as much guidance ahead of what will be a massive occasion for the football club.”

Following clinching a place in the final, Jennow and Harrison now are tasked with the responsibility of bringing the players focus back to league matters.

‘Well travel to face Glasgow Girls on Sunday, in what is their penultimate SWPL2 fixture.

Harrison insists the final two league fixtures represent a perfect opportunity for everyone in the squad to stake their claim for a place in the starting team on cup final day.

“After the game it took a wee while to sink in,” he added. “We were all absolutely delighted and it was a proud day for everyone involved with the team.

“Training on Monday was great, and the players are all really excited and working hard to prove they deserve a cup final place.

“The two remaining games are a great chance for everyone in the squad to prove their worth and will provide some opportunity to perhaps rest a few too ahead of another massive fixture.

“Personally, I’m very excited, as a player I wasn’t ever good enough to play in a Scottish Cup final, but the squad we have are more than capable and absolutely deserve the opportunity.”

Following the Spartans victory, both Jennow and influential midfielder Kerry Montgomery thanked the ‘Well support for their backing at Forthbank.

Harrison is hoping to see even more claret and amber at Firhill in just over two weeks time and has urged the fans yet to attend a women’s football match, to give the game a chance.

“What I’d say to any Motherwell fan thinking of making it along is to please do so,” said the ‘Well assistant. “I’m sure anyone coming along for the first time will be surprised by the quality on show.

“An adult can go for £5 and youngsters get in for free, it’ll be a great family occasion.

“It’s a Motherwell team in a Scottish Cup final. It’s the same badge on the kit and we will be doing everything we can to do the club proud.”

Setting the scene on the visit of St Johnstone

Setting the scene on the visit of St Johnstone

It’s back to league action after the international break on Saturday, as St Johnstone visit Fir Park.

Let’s set the scene for the return to Ladbrokes Premiership action.

    First encounter of the campaign

Motherwell and St Johnstone lock horns for the first time in the 2018/19 season on Saturday, with eight games of the campaign already passed.

The Saints sit three points above the Steelmen in the table, having gathered eight points compared to their opponents’ five.

    Mixed results

Both teams have identical records in their last five matches. From four league games and one Betfred Cup match, both have lost four and drawn one.

Motherwell arrested a four-game run of defeats with a draw against Livingston in their last outing, with Ryan Bowman’s opener being cancelled out by a Keaghan Jacobs free kick.

St Johnstone started their last five matches with a home draw with Aberdeen, before going on to lose their last four. Two of those games have been against Celtic, including a 6-1 home loss in their last outing.

    Head to head

The two teams came face-to-face with each other in the 2017/18 season, with St Johnstone having the upper hand.

Tommy Wright’s men won the first encounter of the campaign 4-1, although Motherwell finished the game with eight men on the pitch because of three red cards.

Motherwell won the next match when St Johnstone visited Fir Park, with Allan Campbell and Curtis Main netting in a 2-0 win.

A 0-0 draw at McDiarmid Park then followed, before the Saints sprung a surprise with a 5-1 win at Fir Park in May as Stephen Robinson’s men geared up for the Scottish Cup final.

Donnelly’s Northern Ireland miss out on play-off spot

Donnelly’s Northern Ireland miss out on play-off spot

Liam Donnelly captained Northern Ireland Under 21s to victory on Tuesday night, but his side were denied a place in the UEFA Under 21 European Championship play-offs.

The nation’s most-capped player at the level helped his team to a 1-0 home win over Slovakia, securing second spot in their group.

But Portugal’s victory over Bosnia and Herzegovina meant it wasn’t possible for the green and white army to be ranked as one of the best runners-up, with only four of the nine teams in second progressing to the play-off stage.

Nevertheless, the win over Slovakia made it five wins in nine for former ‘Well boss Ian Baraclough’s side, who also defeated group winners Spain away in September, a game in which Donnelly got on the scoresheet.

Cadden and Campbell feature in Scotland loss

Chris Cadden and Allan Campbell started as Scotland’s 2019 European Championship qualifying campaign ended with defeat against England.

The pair were involved at Tynecastle as the group winners ran out 2-0 winners, netting second half goals through Reiss Nelson and Kieran Dowell.

For Cadden, the match marked the last time he will be able to feature competitively for the Under 21s, with the 22-year-old ineligible for the next qualifying campaign.

Scotland were already out of the reckoning to make it to the 2019 Euros, having lost in Ukraine last week.

  • Reserves & Under 18s

Motherwell’s reserves side netted five as they defeated Dunfermline Athletic in the SPFL Reserve Cup.

Bigirimana still in Africa Cup of Nations contention

Bigirimana still in Africa Cup of Nations contention

Gael Bigirimana’s Burundi remain in a strong position to qualify for the 2019 Africa Cup of Nations, after picking up a second draw with group favourites Mali.

After a 0-0 away draw to the Eagles on Saturday, the midfielder started again as his side looked to go top of their group.

Fiston Abdul Razak opened the scoring early in the first half for Burundi, but they were pegged back by Mamadou Fafana’s equaliser with 18 minutes to spare.

After four games, Burundi are in third place but are just one point behind Mali and two behind Gabon. The top two teams in the group qualifying automatically for next year’s tournament in Cameroon.

Burundi face South Sudan away in November, with their opponents already out of the running to qualify. Their final group game comes at home to Gabon in March.

  • Reserves & Under 18s

    Reserves put five past Pars

    Reserves put five past Pars

Motherwell’s second string maintained their excellent form with a 5-1 win over Dunfermline Athletic in the SPFL Reserve Cup.

Conor Sammon netted a double, with Broque Watson, Adam Livingstone and Christian Mbulu also getting on the scoresheet, as Stephen Craigan’s side made it three wins from three in the competition.

Yet it was the visitors who took the lead at Forthbank early doors.

Within three minutes, Kallum Higginbotham’s break inside on the right side of the box past Mbulu allowed him to set up Robbie Muirhead at the back post, who put the ball into the roof of the net from five yards out.

The game ebbed and flowed until the young Steelmen recovered their position 21 minutes later.

Liam Brown took the initiative to drive from midfield into the Dunfermline half, before playing in George Newell. The striker’s shot was blocked but fell to Watson, who had time for several touches before equalising from close range.

Six minutes later, the hosts had the lead. A counter attack saw Watson accelerate clear of two defenders down the right. He then found the space to pick his place for a low cross into the box, where Sammon was waiting to tap home at the back post.

Dunfermline made two changes at the interval, including withdrawing the lively Higginbotham, but it was Motherwell who would come flying out of the traps.

A corner on the right saw the youngsters load the box but Akeel Rehman elected instead to find Livingstone, who had positioned himself 30 yards from goal on the inside right side.

Taking a touch to set himself, he then let fly with a low drive that flew through everyone and into the bottom right corner of the net, past a diving goalkeeper.

On the hour mark, it was four. Again, Watson was at the heart of things down the right flank and his cross from the byline was met by Johnson. The striker then laid it on a plate for Sammon, who took the ball on the half volley from close range and lashed home his second of the afternoon.

Johnson and Sammon then made way for young strikers James Scott and Neil McLaughlin, with more goals to come.

The fifth came from defender Mbulu. After a corner was initially cleared, Livingstone’s lifted ball back into the area was met by the defender at the back post. His header back across goal nestled into the net to make it two goals in two games.

Controlling the remainder of the game, Motherwell got the win to surely guarantee their passage in the competition with a match to spare.
