Motherwell are back in Ladbrokes Premiership action on Wednesday, with a trip to Paisley to take on St Mirren.

Here’s everything you need to know ahead of the match. Kick off is at 7.45pm.

    Setting the scene

The first meeting of the 2018/19 season is also the first encounter between the two clubs since the 2014/15 season.

Motherwell won three out of four matches that campaign, winning home and away 1-0 before a 5-0 victory at Fir Park.

After the split, St Mirren took a 2-1 win in the last fixture between the two.

    The form guide

Wednesday’s hosts have drawn one and lost nine of their last 10 matches. Their draw came in manager Oran Kearney’s first game in charge against Celtic, before a run of five straight defeats.

The Steelmen have drawn one and lost four of their last five league games, with the point coming in a home draw with Livingston.

    The man in the middle

    Craigan reacts to Morton win

Stephen Craigan admitted his side were not at their best after defeating Morton 1-0 in the Reserve League.

Broque Watson’s second half goal secured yet another three points for the youngsters, who have now won four games on the bounce.

Despite the result, the reserves boss wants more from his side. He said: “It was a bit stuttered and we didn’t really get any flow in to the game, but we always felt in control.”

Reserves in deserved win over Morton

Motherwell’s reserve side picked up a deserved league win on Monday, taking all three points in a 1-0 victory at home to Greenock Morton.

Broque Watson’s goal early in the second half was decisive in a match the young Steelmen controlled for the most part.

Stephen Craigan made six changes to the side which defeated Dunfermline Athletic in their last outing.

Mark Gillespie, Christian Mbulu, George Newell, Conor Sammon, Danny Johnson and Akeal Rehman all dropped out. PJ Morrison, Jason Krones, Jamie Semple, Dean Cornelius, James Scott and Jake Hastie came into the side.

For all their possession, chances in the first half were at a premium. Watson troubled the ‘Ton keeper briefly with a low shot he had to turn around the post, while Semple had a shout for a penalty turned down.

The breakthrough would come just after the interval as the pair combined.

Semple’s angled run from the middle took him to the left flank. Hitting the byline, his low cross back across goal was perfect for Watson to tap in from close range.

A succession of set plays gave the youngsters a number of half chances, while substitute Alfredo Agyeman saw an effort agonizingly fall wide of the post from a deflection, after showing great pace and power to burst through.

The Steelmen have now won three and drawn one of their opening five Reserve League matches, with their sole defeat coming at Rangers.

    Loan Watch: Four in action

Four Motherwell youngsters were in action at the weekend on loan in the Ladbrokes Championship and League Two.

Jake Hastie got 25 minutes as Alloa Athletic held Inverness Caledonian Thistle to a goalless draw at home.

The result keeps the Wasps within touching distance at the bottom end of the table, sitting in the play-off position but just a point behind Partick Thistle and three behind Dunfermline Athletic.

Also in the Championship, Ross MacLean played an hour as Morton lost 5-0 at league leaders Ross County.

In League Two, Neil McLaughlin played 75 minutes for Stirling Albion as they lost 1-0 at home to league leaders Edinburgh City.

The youngster lined up alongside former ‘Well striker Dylan Mackin, who was making his debut for the Binos after his move from Falkirk.

PJ Morrison was also in action for Albion Rovers, as they lost 3-0 at home to Queen’s Park.

    Keeping North Lanarkshire’s children safe

Players and staff at Motherwell Football Club’s youth academy, together with the North Lanarkshire Child Protection Committee, are working together to raise awareness about what we can all do to help keep North Lanarkshire’s children and young people safe.

We can all play our part by helping to make our communities safe nurturing places for all children to grow up in. Listening to what children say to us and taking any worries they have seriously helps children feel valued and respected, and encourages them to speak up if they don’t feel safe.

The long-established partnership sees the youth academy continue to back the child protection message by displaying the Child Protection Committee logo on their tops throughout the season.

The club will also display prominent child protection messages around Fir Park, as well as information on how to report concerns. Motherwell will also promote important child protection messages through their social media and digital channels.

“We are delighted to continue our partnership between our academy and the Child Protection Committee,” Suzanne Reid, head of commercial and marketing at Motherwell FC, said.

“Our particular focus this year will be on keeping children safe online, especially in the area of social media.

“Our first team and academy players and coaches will work to spread the message of internet safety across our local area.”

Marian Martin, chair of the North Lanarkshire Child Protection Committee, added: ”Protecting our children from abuse, neglect and exploitation, whether online or in our communities, is everyone’s responsibility.

“We want to make sure that everyone understands what to look out for and is confident that they can talk to someone who can help, if they are worried about the safety or wellbeing of a child or young person.

“Working with the academy at Motherwell Football Club, we can extend the reach of our message amongst those who might not otherwise hear it.”

If you are worried about something that is happening to your child or a child you know, please speak out.

You can contact a child’s health visitor or teacher, or contact the locality social work office or Police Scotland. All information shared is treated seriously and the first priority will always be to make sure the child is safe.

Motherwell’s reserves side resume league action on Monday, as they host Greenock Morton.

Stephen Craigan’s side welcome the Ton to Forthbank Stadium in Stirling in the SPFL Reserve League. Kick off is at 2pm.

Entry to the game is free. The two sides face each other for the first time in November, with the Steelmen making the trip to Cappielow later in the month on SPFL Reserve League Cup duty.

Both sides are currently level on points in the table after four games, having both won two and drawn one. Morton sit ahead in fifth place with a superior goal difference.

Women end league season in style

Motherwell rounded off their outstanding SWPL 2 campaign with a 5-1 victory over St Johnstone at Braidhurst.

The women of steel scored an incredible 90 goals in 21 league matches during a superb season and the champions finished 21 points ahead of nearest rivals Kilmarnock.

Donald Jennow’s side can now look forward to the SSE Scottish Women’s Cup final against Hibs, after a convincing win in which the three points were rarely in doubt.

The hosts were forced into an early change when Kerry Montgomery hobbled off to be replaced by Lesley Condie and the substitute almost opened the scoring on 10 minutes when she headed wide Katey Turner’s cross.

The hosts would break the deadlock six minutes later, courtesy of an unlikely source.

Ashley Nicolson has been a rock at the heart of the Motherwell defence throughout the season, but she had failed to add her name to the scoresheet until she reacted quickest to pounce on Kirsty McLaughlin’s delivery and smashed the ball high beyond Rebecca Cameron.

After taking the lead, Jennow’s side were clearly buoyed and what would follow in the next four minutes effectively ended the match as a contest.

Turner, who was causing all sorts of problems for the Saints defence, sent across a tantalising delivery and Amy Henderson’s sliced clearance found the corner of her own net.

On 20 minutes it was 3-0. Hayley Cunningham’s corner with perfect and Suzanne Mulvey leapt to head the ball home.

Motherwell looked determined not to let their levels drop and Sammy Hare passed up two opportunities, before adding her name to the scoresheet with three minutes remaining in the first half.

Turner took on her marker, before cutting the ball across the face of goal and Hare made no mistake from close range.

To their credit, St Johnstone didn’t let their heads drop and they got a goal back early in the second half when Rhianna Tweedie’s shot looped over the head of Kendall Welsh and found the net.

A series of substitutions for both sides broke up the rhythm of the second half, but it was Motherwell who continued to enjoy the better of the chances.

The final goal of the game came when two substitutes combined. Caitlin Russell’s cross slipped through the grasp of the Saints keeper and Susan Fairlie was left with the simple task of tapping the ball into the net from a yard out.

Emma Black almost got in on the scoring act with a deft chip, but she would see her effort land on the top of the goal in what would prove to be the last incident of note in the match.

The women of steel will now bid to clinch a double in next Sunday’s Scottish Cup final at Firhill.
