Loan Watch: Two in action at weekend

Two of Motherwell’s young loanees were in league action on Saturday.

Jake Hastie, Peter Morrison and Alfredo Agyeman were retained to feature in the Colts’ IRN-BRU Cup match with Ross County, leaving Ross MacLean and Neil McLaughlin out to feature for Morton and Stirling Albion respectively.

MacLean got the last 20 minutes for the ‘Ton, as they drew 0-0 at league leaders Ayr United.

It was his corner that almost gave his side the winner at the death, with Gregor Buchanan’s towering header being nodded off the line to keep the game at a draw.

Neil McLaughlin got the full 90 minutes in League Two, as Stirling Albion drew 2-2 at Annan Athletic.

Former ‘Well youngster Dylan Mackin got one of the goals, as the Binos twice came from behind to claim the draw.

The goalkeeper was restored to the starting team for the final group match, with Michael O’Neill’s side having already been relegated from League B.

In front of a crowd of almost 18,000 at Windsor Park, it looked as though they would claim a score draw with the visitors, before Valentino Lazaro netted in the last minute to claim a 2-1 victory.

Bigirimana one game away from Africa Cup of Nations

Gaël Bigirimana’s Burundi are closing in on a historic first appearance at the Africa Cup of Nations.

The midfielder featured as his country thumped South Sudan 5-2 at the weekend, putting them second in their qualification group with one game to play.

With Mali having qualified after a 1-0 win over Gabon, Bigirimana’s side just need to avoid defeat at home to Gabon on 22 March to qualify.

Burundi are two points ahead of Gabon in the final qualifying spot, and managed a 1-1 draw away to their group rivals earlier this year.

The goals from Colts match with Ross County

Adam Livingstone scored a stunning free-kick, but Motherwell’s Colts ultimately bowed out of the IRN-BRU Cup to Ross County.

The Championship side showed their experience to grind out the win, in the face of a strong performance from the young Steelmen.

    Players react to Colts result

Barry Maguire, Broque Watson and goal scorer Adam Livingstone react to the quarter final defeat against Ross County in the Irn-Bru cup.

Despite going down to ten men, the Steelmen put in an inspired performance against Championship opponents, and fell narrowly short of a place in the last four.

Speaking at full time, Barry Maguire said: “We’ve done the coaches, the fans and ourselves proud.”

    Craigan: We made history

Stephen Craigan was disappointed his Colts side exited the IRN-BRU Cup at the hands of Ross County, but was proud of his history-making side.

The youngsters were the first Under 20s Premiership side to reach the quarter-finals and more than matched their vastly more experienced opponents, before losing 2-1.
