Vote for your January player of the month

Vote for your January player of the month

It’s time to vote for your Tullibardine Player of the Month for January.

The Steelmen have picked up two positive Ladbrokes Premiership results in the first month of 2019, defeating Hibernian and Dundee.

To vote, head to our Facebook page and follow the instructions.

David Turnbull has been the man whose goals won both those games, with the 19-year-old then being rewarded with a new two-and-a-half year deal.

Liam Grimshaw has been an all-action part of the defence which has kept two league clean sheets, with his box-to-box energy rightly earning him plaudits.

Another academy product, Jake Hastie, has burst onto the scene in January after returning from a positive loan spell at Alloa Athletic. A first goal for the club in the William Hill Scottish Cup tie with Ross County was then followed up with starts in the two league fixtures, where he showed his talent.

Mark Gillespie is also another strong contender. Keeping two shutouts in the league, the goalkeeper has continued his form as a safe pair of hands between the sticks.

    Aaron Taylor-Sinclair joins Crewe Alexandra

    Aaron Taylor-Sinclair joins Crewe Alexandra

Aaron Taylor-Sinclair has left the club to join English League Two side Crewe Alexandra on loan until the end of the season.

The 27-year-old left back joined from Plymouth Argyle in the summer, but a series of injuries have restricted him to just five league starts in claret and amber.

He joins Crewe as they hunt for a play-off spot, the Railwaymen sit just nine points behind sixth-placed MK Dons.

“Aaron arrived having previously excelled in the Scottish Premiership with Partick Thistle and, having won a move south to the English Championship at the time, we were excited to add him to our squad last summer,” Motherwell boss Stephen Robinson said.

“Whilst his ability is unquestionable, a number of frustrating injuries have prevented him from really getting going at Fir Park.

“We felt it best and fair on everyone to give him a fresh start elsewhere.”

Everyone at Motherwell Football Club would like to thank Aaron for his effort whilst at the club. As his contract with us will expire at the end of his loan spell, we wish him every success in his future career.

David Turnbull extends his Motherwell contract

David Turnbull extends his Motherwell contract

Motherwell Football Club are delighted to confirm David Turnbull has signed a new two-and-a-half year contract at the club.

The 19-year-old midfielder has been a revelation since winning his place in the first team, scoring five times in 13 starts in claret and amber this term.

The Scottish youth international had four months left on his previous deal, but has now extended that until the summer of 2021.

“We’re delighted David has agreed to extend his contract,” manager Stephen Robinson said.

“It’s to his credit that he has rejected the possibility of a more to a bigger or so-called more lucrative club in favour of continuing his development here, playing first team football,”

“He’s made a brilliant start to his Motherwell career, but he also knows that he can get even better if he continues to work hard and continues to learn.

“He’s joined other academy graduates such as Allan Campbell, Chris Cadden and Jake Hastie who are now imposing themselves on the first team.

“The positive news for the club is that we have others hot on their heels with the likes of Barry Maguire, Adam Livingstone, James Scott and more close to making their own impact.”

A Motherwell fan who joined the club at the age of nine, Turnbull says it was the natural choice to stay at Fir Park.

“I am really pleased to get this deal over the line and to have my immediate future sorted,” he said.

“I can kick on now, keep getting games under my belt, keep trying to do what I’m doing and hopefully it could be the start of something.

“I think I’ve made a decent start, but I know I’ve got a lot to learn and the place for me to do that is at Motherwell.”

Reserves start year with derby win

Motherwell’s reserve side got 2019, and Maurice Ross’ tenure, off to a winning start with a comeback derby win at Hamilton Academical.

Goals from Gaël Bigirimana, James Scott and Stuart McKinstry were the difference, as the second string recovered from Alex Penny’s early opening goal.

An experienced side saw Ross McCormack start, and he was joined by fellow first team squad members Aaron Taylor-Sinclair, Liam Donnelly, Christian Mbulu, Rohan Ferguson and Bigirimana in starting the match at New Douglas Park.

Adam Livingstone, George Newell, Jamie Semple, Dean Cornelius and Scott made up the remainder of the side.

Within four minutes, the hosts were ahead. Alex Penny found himself with a free header in the box, nodding past Ferguson to open an early advantage.

Twenty minutes later, the Steelmen were level. Bigirimana found room to get the ball into the area, and his cross-cum-shot ended up finding its way into the back of the net.

Ross’ side pushed on, and the next goal would come with 10 minutes left in the first half. Picking up the ball deep, Scott drove forward and then curled the ball into the top corner of the net.

The experience in the ranks told further as the game wore on, especially in the third goal.

McCormack, getting minutes under his belt as he builds to full fitness, rolled a quick free kick to substitute McKinstry and, with the opposition caught napping, the youngster fired home to guarantee the three points.

Women beat Saints in second friendly

Women beat Saints in second friendly

Motherwell recorded their first victory of 2019 with an impressive 3-1 victory over St Johnstone.

Following up from last weekend’s 2-2 draw against Newcastle, Donald Jennow’s side went one better in the cold and windy conditions at McDiarmid Park.

It was the hosts who broke the deadlock after six minutes through their captain Jade McDonald, but ‘Well came battling back and Kerry Montgomery headed home an equaliser just after the half hour mark.

There were chances at both ends early in the second half before Chelsea McEachran fired ‘Well in front with quarter of an hour remaining and Sarah Crilly put the game beyond doubt when she swept home after 86 minutes.

The women of steel started the game brightly and there was chances for Crilly and Katie Rice before Saints took the lead.

Motherwell were caught out in possession, allowing the hosts to counter and McDonald rounded Morgan Hunter before calmly rolling the ball into the net.

A back and forth game followed with both sides creating plenty of chances, Ellie May Cowie continued to look dangerous for the home side while Montgomery was pulling the strings in midfield for the ‘Well, continuously looking to exploit the space in behind the defence.

The equaliser arrived after 32 minutes, when Montgomery rose highest to power home a header despite the best effort of the Saints defender on the line.

Hunter twice denied Cowie to ensure the game was level at the break and the former Killie keeper again produced a brilliant stop to deny the midfielder after the restart.

‘Well were also carrying a threat in attack and the ever dangerous Crilly saw her looping shot cannon back off the crossbar before Rice was denied by a good save.

With 15 minutes remaining the turnaround was complete, the Saints defence were unable to scramble clear Hayley Cunningham’s corner and McEachran smashed the ball high into the roof of the net

The game was put beyond doubt with four minutes left on the clock and it came from yet another flowing Motherwell attack.

Cunningham burst into the box brilliantly and laid the ball to Maxine Welsh who saw her shot blocked before Crilly converted to cap an excellent showing with a goal.

Motherwell get their SWPL1 campaign underway in two weeks time when they host Stirling University at Ravenscraig.
