Motherwell surrendered a two-goal advantage to draw 2-2 with Hamilton Academical in the Reserve League on Monday.

Casper Sloth’s well-taken first half goal had Maurice Ross’ side ahead at the break, before Christy Manzinga’s cross was turned into the net thanks to an own goal from Ciaran McKenna early in the second.

But Jamie Hamilton’s double, both headed efforts from set plays, ensured the visitors left with a share of the spoils.

A host of first team players got minutes at Broadwood Stadium. Trevor Carson, Bevis Mugabi, Christian Ilic, Barry Maguire and the aforementioned Sloth all featured, with some getting the full 90 under their belts.

It took just five minutes for Motherwell to take the lead. Dean Cornelius, starting at right back, got down the flank and crossed for Ilic. The Croatian quickly laid the ball into the path of Sloth just outside the area, and he put his laces through the bouncing ball to find the bottom left corner of the net.

A back-and-forth fixture then looked to be firmly in the Steelmen’s grasp seven minutes into the second period. The powerful run of Manzinga took him from middle to right, before firing the ball in low and hard to the six yard box.

There were no Motherwell takers but, despite calls from his goalkeeper who had come to gather, McKenna inadvertently steered the ball into his own net.

Thirteen minutes later, Accies were back in the game. Defender Hamilton rose at the back post on the left side to power home a header from a perfectly-weighted free kick.

Motherwell struggled to create chances and, at the death, had their lead taken from them. A carbon copy free kick from the other side was met by Jamie Hamilton, who placed his header past Carson to take the draw.

Motherwell booked their place in the SSE Scottish Women’s Cup semi-finals with a 5-0 win over Queen’s Park on Sunday.

A hat-trick from Chelsea McEachran, as well as goals from Lauren Doran-Barr and Myia Arbuckle, helped the women of steel progress to the semi-final stage of the competition for the second year in a row.

McEachran opened the scoring with 25 minutes on the clock, rising highest from the corner to head home.

Doran-Barr  thenadded the second ten minutes later with a powerful drive from the edge of the box.

In a one-sided first half, McEachran put the match beyond the visitors with a stunning strike, delicately placing the ball into the far corner from 30 yards.

Determined, and skilful throughout, McEachran got her hat-trick five minutes into the second half. The Queen’s defence could only watch as she moved past them into the box and finished easily.

Substitute Arbuckle completed the scoring on 77 minutes as she caught onto a loose ball, placing the ball past the keeper.

Motherwell will now be in the draw for the semi-final which takes place on Tuesday, 17 September. They will face either Glasgow City, Hibernian or Rangers.

Darren O’Dea has left Motherwell to take up a coaching role with another Scottish Premiership side.

The club’s Under 18s manager, Darren arrived in May this year and has made a significant impact in his short time at Fir Park.

His successor has been appointed and will be announced shortly.

“It was an extremely tough decision to leave Motherwell as I have loved every minute of my short time at Fir Park,” said Darren.

“However, this was a big opportunity that presented itself unexpectedly and I felt I had to take the job.

“I want to thank Stephen Robinson and Steven Hammell, along with all the other coaches and support staff, as well as the board at Motherwell, for the opportunity and wish everyone at the club the very best going forward.”

‘Well boss Stephen Robinson added: “Whilst we were disappointed to lose Darren, he has conducted himself impeccably and we wish him well in his coaching career.

“The timing of the vacancy elsewhere wasn’t great from our point of view. But it couldn’t be helped, it was an offer he couldn’t refuse and we wish him well.”

MANAGER CALLS FOR FOCUS

The head coach wants his side to target another final after the side were runners up last year.

“It’s a great opportunity to reach the prestigious end of the competition, which is where we want to be. Our full focus is on Sunday however.

“I don’t think you get to quarter-finals of any cup and get an easy game. Queen’s Park have had to go through numerous rounds to get to the last eight and they will come with their threats and dangers we have to deal with.”

THE LEAGUE ISN’T OVER YET

Donald Jennow was delighted with the team’s performance last time out but made clear safety has not yet been reached.

The women of steel consolidated their place in mid-table with an important 2-1 victory over Stirling University. Chelsea McEachran’s strike and a Kerry Montgomery penalty secured three points.

“It was a really crucial win, from the start of the season we knew the games against Forfar Farmington and Stirling University would be important and as the league has levelled out that has become clear.

“It was a big step, but we are not safe yet. Forfar (Farmington) on Friday will be another game we want to take three points from. We are looking up the table, rather than down.”

Motherwell took a big three points back home in a commanding 3-2 win at Hearts.

Declan Gallagher’s header, a stunner from Sherwin Seedorf and Jermaine Hylton’s clincher ensured the win, although the hosts set up a nervy finish in front of an urging home crowd.

The Steelmen went into the game off the back of two consecutive victories, but with the feeling still of a point to prove having lost to Hearts earlier in the Betfred Cup.

Stephen Robinson made one change from the team which had blown Hibernian away before the international break. Devante Cole came into the team, with Christopher Long swapping to the bench. Mark O’Hara and Bevis Mugabi both came in on the bench.

After a tepid start, the game exploded into life from a Motherwell set play with 20 minutes on the clock.

Liam Polworth’s pinpoint corner found Gallagher at the back post, where he was waiting to bullet the header home for his first Motherwell goal.

From there, the visitors took control. Liam Donnelly rattled the crossbar as he went in pursuit of his ninth goal in nine games, while Cole also went agonisingly close to opening his account.

Motherwell remained in control in the second half, and it took seven minutes for the advantage to be doubled.

Peter Hartley’s excellent harrying of Uche Ikpeazu forced the defender into trying to bounce the ball back to his team-mates from deep. But his attempt went into acres of space in the right back area, with Jamie Brandon having bombed on.

That left acres of space for Seedorf to open up and run at goal. Closed down 25 yards from goal, he took his opportunity to rifle an unstoppable effort in at the near post, via the crossbar, to send the travelling support wild.

A home crowd growing in anger and desperation got something to give them hope nine minutes later. A scramble in the box eventually allowed the strength of Ikpeazu to give him a goal, after Mark Gillespie had done so well to keep out an initial effort.

Undeterred, Motherwell ploughed on. Five minutes later, and less than 30 seconds after entering the field as a substitute, Hylton restored the two-goal cushion.

Chasing a supposed lost cause down the flank as Sean Clare looked to have things under control, the winger took his opportunity to steal the ball on the edge of the area.

With goalkeeper Colin Doyle committed and the angle tight, the Englishman still had it all to do. But he composed himself brilliantly to squeeze the ball through the bodies and into the net.

Substitute Ryotaro Meshino set up a nervy end, after being given room to shoot past Gillespie with four minutes remaining. Then, with four minutes added, Motherwell held firm to take a huge three points home from the capital.
