    Tale of the tape

St Mirren are unbeaten in their last three matches against the Steelmen, picking up two wins and a draw.

The last was a 2-1 victory at Fir Park in February, which came a week after their penalty shootout win in the Scottish Cup.

Motherwell roared back from 4-1 down to take the game to extra time, before losing on spot kicks.

Conversely, Motherwell are unbeaten in their last four in Paisley, drawing one and winning three.

    Form guide

Stephen Robinson’s men were on a run of four wins from five before being disrupted by back-to-back defeats away to Hapoel Beer-Sheva and at home to Rangers.

St Mirren came from two down to draw 2-2 in their Betfred Cup group stage match at Queen of the South on Saturday, before gaining a bonus point in the shootout.

Before that, a 4-1 home win in the cup over Partick Thistle came off the back of six consecutive league defeats, with their last positive Premiership result coming in the form of a 1-1 home draw with Ross County on 22 August.

    International round-up

    International round-up

Declan Gallagher and Stephen O’Donnell were again pivotal as Scotland recorded back-to-back victories.

A 1-0 UEFA Nations League win over Slovakia strengthened the national side’s position at the top of the group, ahead of Wednesday’s visit of Czech Republic.

O’Donnell was the creator for Lyndon Dykes’ decisive goal, sending in a pinpoint cross from the right which the QPR striker steered home.

The result marked the second win and second clean sheet for Scotland with the Motherwell pair in the backline, following the 0-0 draw and penalty win over Israel last week in the UEFA Euro 2020 play-off semi-final.

Trevor Carson was among the substitutes as Northern Ireland were defeated 1-0 by Austria in their UEFA Nations League group match.

Several hundred fans were allowed in to watch at Windsor Park, as Ian Baraclough’s side prepare for their UEFA Euro 2020 play-off final with Slovakia in November.

Allan Campbell and Barry Maguire both featured on Friday as Scotland’s Under 21 side pulled off a crucial 2-0 home win over Czech Republic at Tynecastle Park.

Together with goalkeeper PJ Morrison, the team are now in San Marino for a match on Tuesday in which a win would send them two points clear at the top of their UEFA Under 21 Championship qualifying group with two games to go.

Bevis Mugabi’s stint with Uganda at a training camp in Dubai comes to a close on Monday, after a week spent in training ahead of crucial AFCON qualifying matches next month.

Motherwell duo feature as Scotland progress

Declan Gallagher and Stephen O’Donnell started for Scotland as the national team progressed to the final of the play-offs for UEFA EURO 2020.

The pair were pivotal as Israel were eventually toppled 5-3 on penalties, after a 0-0 draw after 120 minutes.

In doing so, they became the first Motherwell duo to start a match together for the national team since Brian Martin, Paul Lambert and Rab McKinnon all lined up against Japan in the Kirin Cup in 1995.

Serbia lie in wait in the final in November away from home for a place in next summer’s tournament.

‘Well keeper Trevor Carson was also in the squad as Northern Ireland got to their play-off final with a penalty win against Bosnia and Herezegovina.

They will face Slovakia in the final.

    International stars prepare for action

    International stars prepare for action

Seven ‘Well stars are on international duty across the October break.

Declan Gallagher and Stephen O’Donnell are with the Scotland squad for their crucial UEFA EURO 2020 play-off semi-final with Israel at Hampden on Thursday.

That’s followed by a UEFA Nations League double header at home to Slovakia and Czech Republic on Sunday and Wednesday respectively.

Allan Campbell, Barry Maguire and PJ Morrison make up a trio of Motherwell players with the Scotland Under 21 squad, joining ex-Well man David Turnbull in the selection.

They host Czech Republic at home in European Under 21 Championship qualifying on Friday at Tynecastle, before travelling to take on San Marino on Tuesday.

Trevor Carson is with Northern Ireland for their shot at reaching Euro 2020, before a UEFA Nations League double header.

They face Bosnia and Herzegovina on Thursday away, as they try to set up a play-off final with either Republic of Ireland or Slovakia next month.

Thursday’s game is followed by a home match with Austria and an away tie with Norway.

Bevis Mugabi is also on international duty in the UAE, with his Uganda side taking part in a training camp and friendly against local side Al Nasr, ahead of crucial AFCON qualifying matches in November.

    Aaron Chapman signs

    Aaron Chapman signs

Aaron Chapman has joined Motherwell until the end of the 2020/21 season.

The 30-year-old English goalkeeper joins on a free transfer, having left Peterborough United in the summer. His move remains subject to international clearance.

“Aaron comes in to give us experienced cover and competition for Trevor,” manager Stephen Robinson said.

“He has played a high number of games at a good level in England, so will prove a valuable addition.

“Importantly, this will also open the door for us to put PJ Morrison on loan. We want to do that so he can gain valuable experience at first team level and we hope to announce a move for him shortly.

“That is vitally important for all young players but especially goalkeepers, who have a limited opportunity.

“Without reserve games, the development of our young players would be affected if we did not take that step. Going out on loan is the perfect way to bridge the gap.”

The 6ft 7in Chapman joined Chesterfield in 2013 from non-league side Belper Town.

Loan moves to Chester, Accrington Stanley and Bristol Rovers followed, before making the permanent switch to Accrington in 2016, where we won the League Two title in 2017/18.

A transfer to Peterborough United followed that summer, making 39 appearances before a short-term spell at Tranmere Rovers on loan.

Free kindness and mental health e-clinic

Free kindness and mental health e-clinic

The impact of kindness on our brain is the key message at an upcoming e-clinic led by Kerry Mitchell, wellbeing manager and mental health trainer with our main partners Paycare.

It is part of a series of online sessions our sponsor are running for free. The clinic starts at 10am on Tuesday, 20 October.

The hour-long e-clinic will include six science-backed ways that being kind is good for you and others, how the kindness actually impacts the brain, and referral pathways for talking therapies.

Attendees will also look at the factors which make people feel uncomfortable starting a conversation about mental health, and some of the current research associated with World Mental Health Day, which takes place across the globe in October

To secure your free place at the next session, or for more information about Paycare Wellbeing’s Mental Health Training, email wellbeing@paycare.org.

Kerry, Paycare’s Mental Health First Aid qualified trainer, said: “The e-clinic is part of a series being held once a month. During October we wanted to support organisations to be able to respond with kindness, and the real-life benefits associated with the way we treat others.

“This year has been a tough one, particularly for people living with mental illness and their carers. Research suggests that nearly 80% of people living with mental illness say that Covid-19 and associated lockdown has made their mental health worse.

“After World Mental Health Day, we will tie in the theme of how kindness can act as a chemical and can further support others who are dealing with mental health.”

In addition to the webinars, Paycare Wellbeing is also extending its online offering to complement its pre-pandemic face-to-face Mental Health First Aid training options, incorporating the new accredited online version of the full Mental Health First Aider course.

    Devante Cole signs for Motherwell

    Devante Cole signs for Motherwell

Devante Cole has returned to Motherwell on a permanent basis.

The forward, who made 21 appearances during a loan spell last season, has joined on a deal until the end of the 2020/21 campaign.

“Obviously we have worked with Devante before, so we know what are getting from him,” said manager Stephen Robinson.

“He give us options all across the forward line and adds pace. He has proven he can score goals coming in from the wider positions and he will add real competition to the front line.”

Cole started his career at Manchester City and has played across English football in the last six years at Barnsley, MK Dons, Bradford City, Fleetwood Town, Wigan Athletic and Burton Albion.

He moved to Doncaster Rovers in January at the end of his previous spell at Fir Park, making nine appearances.
