The third Lanarkshire derby of the season takes place on Saturday.

Motherwell host local rivals Hamilton Academical, looking to claim a first win of the 2020/21 campaign against Brian Rice’s side.

Kick-off at Fir Park is at 3pm.

    Watch live

If you’re in the UK or Republic of Ireland, a live stream of the game will be available to buy on a pay-per-view basis for £12.

Season ticket holders can watch the game for free, as usual, at live.motherwellfc.co.uk.

International-based supporters can watch via their usual subscription at live.motherwellfc.co.uk.

    Tale of the tape

Hamilton are unbeaten in their last four competitive Lanarkshire derbies.

A 3-0 win at the start of 2021 at home followed a 1-0 success at Fir Park early on in the campaign.

Motherwell started 2019/20 with a 3-1 victory at the home of their rivals, but a 2-1 home loss came before a 0-0 draw away.

    Form guide

Motherwell made it three wins from four with a hard-fought 1-0 victory at Kilmarnock in midweek.

That success followed taking three points apiece from Dundee United and Ross County, as well as running Celtic close in Glasgow in a 2-1 defeat.

Accies are without a win in five but came close to ending that at home to Rangers last weekend.

A battling show looked to be in vain as the visitors took the lead late on, but Ross Callachan’s last-gasp equaliser ensured a share of the spoils.

    Kilmarnock 0-1 Motherwell

Motherwell got back to winning ways with a hard-fought 1-0 win away to Kilmarnock.

Allan Campbell’s second-half strike was the difference, paired with resolute defending from Graham Alexander’s side.

A frantic start saw both teams have early chances from set plays. First, a ball into the ‘Well box saw Dikamona’s close-range effort blocked, before Watt fired a 25-yard free-kick off the wall.

Motherwell were struggling to get the ball to their forwards, with Kilmarnock enjoying the bulk of the attacking play in the first half.

Cole would have the best chance of the half. Kelly’s long-kick was flicked on by Watt into the path of his fellow forward.

The Englishman, however, scuffed his shot from 15 yards straight into the hands of goalkeeper Doyle, and the two teams would go in level at the interval.

Kilmarnock had the bulk of the attacking play again in the second period, but the better chances continued to fall to the Steelmen.

Cole should have had ‘Well ahead 15 minutes into the second half. Maguire’s free-kick from the left was flicked on in the box by Lamie. Cole read it to dive in, but his header from close range was parried by Doyle.

The visitors though did get the lead in the 71st minute.

Manager Alexander spotted the quick throw opportunity on the left, with Carroll throwing into the feet of Watt.

The forward hustled well, spinning inside and feeding a perfect pass into the path of Campbell, who rushed through and fired in off the bar from 15 yards.

Motherwell head to Ayrshire on Wednesday night to take on Kilmarnock.

Here are the key topics going into the Scottish Premiership match.

    Long overdue visit

You have to go back to 21 December 2019 for Motherwell’s last trip to Rugby Park.

A combination of the fixture list, the curtailment of the 2019/20 season and the postponement of this fixture earlier in the campaign means it’s almost 14 months since the Steelmen last made the trip south.

On that occasion, Jake Carroll’s free-kick gave Motherwell all three points in a 1-0 victory.

    Tightly packed

One point separates the two teams going into Wednesday night’s match.

Motherwell are the side a point better off, sitting ninth and one position above their opponents.

‘Well have also played a game less, with a rearranged match with St Mirren still to come.

While both teams will be looking over their shoulders, a top six place is also still attainable, with St Mirren currently seven points ahead of Motherwell.

    New man in the dugout

Wednesday’s match will be Tommy Wright’s first of charge of Kilmarnock, having been appointed as manager on Monday.

The Northern Irishman, of course, is no stranger to Motherwell, having successfully guided St Johnstone to cup success and numerous top six finishes in the Scottish Premiership.

Motherwell make a long-awaited return to Kilmarnock on Wednesday night.

Over 13 months have passed since the last visit to Ayrshire, when the Steelmen returned back up the road with three points.

Kick-off at Rugby Park is at 6pm.

    Tale of the tape

Jake Carroll’s free-kick was the difference on Motherwell’s last visit to Rugby Park in December 2019, with the Irishman finding the net in a 1-0 victory.

Kilmarnock were victors in the only encounter between the two clubs so far in 2020/21, winning 2-0 at Fir Park at the end of December.

    Form guide

A point separates the two teams going into Wednesday’s fixture, with Motherwell ahead in ninth spot to Kilmarnock’s 10th place.

Back-to-back wins against Ross County and Dundee United were followed by a 2-1 loss at Celtic at the weekend, which came agonisingly close to being a draw only for Harry Smith’s header in the last second to be cleared off the line.

Kilmarnock have lost their last five matches, with Hibernian, St Johnstone, Livingston, Celtic and St Mirren all picking up maximum points.

    Celtic 2-1 Motherwell

    Celtic 2-1 Motherwell

Motherwell left themselves with too much to do as a second-half comeback came up short in a 2-1 loss at Celtic.

Goals from Stephen Welsh and Odsonne Edouard put Celtic in the driving seat. But Allan Campbell’s second-half lob over Scott Bain brought ‘Well back to life, albeit just short of a comeback.

Motherwell went with an unchanged starting line-up from the side which defeated Dundee United 2-1 in midweek.

But the best-laid plans suffered a blow with just two minutes on the clock. Turnbull’s pinpoint corner from the right found Welsh in mid-air, with the young defender powering his header into the net.

Goalkeeper Kelly had to keep a number of shots at bay as the hosts laid siege, controlling possession in the opening spells.

The Steelmen did find themselves up the break on the counter early on. Cole’s burst down the left led to a cross being gathered by Bain, and the ‘keeper had to be alert again to stop Mugabi’s flicked header from Maguire’s deep free-kick.

Celtic retained the bulk of the ball for the majority of the first period, save for a Long free-kick in stoppage time which went into the hands of the ‘keeper, seeing the two teams would go in at the break with the hosts a goal to the good.

The hosts, however, would start quick out the block in the second.

With six minutes played, Edouard received the ball on the edge of the area. Twisting and turning to make space, he unleashed an unstoppable shot into the bottom-left corner of the net to make it 2-0.

Cole got in behind and saw his close-range shot blocked by Bain, with Mugabi heading wide from the resulting corner, before ‘Well got a foot back in the match.

Intricate build-up play down the right fed Campbell into the middle. Moving the ball onto his right boot, his shot from the edge of the box looped up and lobbed Bain to nestle in the net.

Motherwell rallied and thought they’d grabbed the equaliser with 15 to go. Long’s fizzer across goal just eluded Cole, and the resulting ball back across was blocked within inches of the line.

But, ultimately, the Steelmen would leave Glasgow empty-handed despite their fightback. In the last second, Smith saw his header hooked off the line as Motherwell couldn’t believe their misfortune.

A trip to Celtic lies in wait on Saturday for Motherwell.

Here’s the key topics going into the match.

    Seeking a win to remember

Motherwell’s last win in the east end of Glasgow came in December 2015, when a Louis Moult double secured a comeback 2-1 win.

Since then, Celtic have won every home match against the Steelmen.

    Unwanted home form

Unusually, Celtic have suffered a dip in home form of late.

In the last five Premiership matches, they have won two, drawn two and lost one, dropping seven points in the process.

Hibs and Livingston both earned draws in Glasgow, while St Mirren left with all three points in Celtic’s last home fixture.

    Cole on song

Devante Cole scores goals. The Englishman has now netted four in his last five appearances, scoring against St Mirren, Rangers, Ross County and Dundee United.

The 25-year-old has now given himself the platform to try and eclipse his most prolific season of his career – when he netted 12 for Fleetwood Town in 2017/18.
