Motherwell go to Hibernian on Saturday in the Scottish Premiership.

Here are the key topics going into the fixture.

    In-form Hibernian

Jack Ross’ men are flying of late in their quest to secure a European spot.

Hibs have won their last four matches, beating Dundee United, St Mirren, Aberdeen and Hamilton Academical.

Along the way, they’ve conceded just once, scoring eight.

    Positive signs

Having lost back-to-back home matches against Hamilton Academical and then St Johnstone, Motherwell needed a reaction when they went to St Mirren on Wednesday night.

Securing a point in a 0-0 draw, a vastly-improved showing should give encouragement from a match where the visitors comfortably could have taken the three points.

The key, according to manager Graham Alexander, is now maintaining those performance levels in the quest to keep ahead of the bottom pack.

    Race towards the split

Saturday marks Motherwell’s third-last match before the league split, with Hibernian a game behind.

For the Steelmen, a top six finish is still mathematically possible. Seven points separate them from sixth-placed St Mirren, with nine points still available.

Dundee United and St Johnstone, however, are also in the hunt and have more points on the board.

Looking in the other direction, Motherwell are five points above the bottom two places and know a win can open even more daylight.

    Tale of the tape

Hibernian are unbeaten in their last four against Motherwell, winning two and drawing two.

A 3-0 win at Fir Park earlier in the campaign came after a 0-0 draw at Easter Road back in August.

    Form guide

Motherwell arrested a run of two consecutive defeats with a battling 0-0 draw at St Mirren on Wednesday night.

Graham Alexander’s men have now taken eight points from a possible 18 on their travels under the new manager.

Hibernian have won their last four matches in a row, including two successive 2-0 home wins.

Dundee United, St Mirren, Aberdeen and Hamilton Academical have been felled in that four-game winning run.

    St Mirren 0-0 Motherwell

Motherwell showed their battling qualities but couldn’t find the goal to win in a 0-0 draw with St Mirren.

‘Well made three changes from the team defeated by St Johnstone at the weekend. O’Donnell returned from suspension at right back, with Campbell fit again to replace Polworth in midfield.

Roberts made his first start in claret and amber, replacing Long in the starting side.

The visitors started in a positive fashion, frequently trying to pin their hosts back and get the ball in forward areas.

Maguire saw a great shot from 25 yards deflected just past the post as ‘Well increased the pressure. Neither goalkeeper, though, was seriously tested in the opening 45.

‘Well though should have had a penalty with five minutes left in the half. Watt was tripped as he broke inside the box, but his decision to stay on his feet led to referee Kevin Clancy not blowing his whistle.

Motherwell started the second half with great intent. Campbell saw an early shot from close range blocked, before firing over from just inside the box soon after.

Roberts was on the end of a brilliant, one-touch flowing move which saw Alnwick get down well at his feet to deny.

Cole was taken out in the box on the hour mark, before getting to his feet and firing a shot straight at the goalkeeper.

Motherwell upped their pressure. Cole again got free on the right inside the box, with Alnwick spreading himself big to block.

Cole again would go agonisingly close as the game wore on. Roberts’ corner from the left was flicked on by the forward acrobatically, but his effort clipped the inside of the left post and found the grateful hands of the goalkeeper.

The visitors would continue to press but couldn’t carve out their final chance, while also putting in a solid defensive showing to limit the hosts to virtually no clear chances.

Motherwell: Kelly, O’Donnell, Magloire, Lamie, Carroll, Maguire, Campbell, Crawford, Cole, Roberts, Watt.

Subs not used: Morrison, Devine, McGinley, Johnston, Cornelius, Polworth, Lawless, Hastie, Long.

It’s a trip to Paisley next for Motherwell.

Here are the topics going into Wednesday’s match.

Three points to get up the table

Wednesday’s fixture is a catch-up game for the two sides, a game in hand from a postponed match back in October.

For the Saints, they are looking to strengthen their grip on a top-six place and close the gap on Livingston for a potential UEFA Conference League place.

Motherwell are four points above the bottom side Hamilton Academical and are looking to extend that cushion, while also potentially going within four points of their midweek opponents.

    Away form of note

Motherwell have won two and drawn one of their last five away league matches.

A 1-1 draw at St Mirren in Graham Alexander’s first game in charge was followed by defeat at Aberdeen and Celtic.

But the Steelmen have also picked up important wins, beating Ross County and Kilmarnock.

    Unbeaten run

Motherwell are undefeated in their last five trips to Paisley.

A 1-1 draw in January came after a similar scoreline in February 2020, and three consecutive wins.

    Maurice Ross departs Motherwell

Maurice Ross has left Motherwell Football Club to pursue new opportunities.

The first team coach departs after two years at Fir Park, having originally joined as Head of 18s to 21s, before taking up a role on the senior staff.

“I feel the time is right for me to pursue other challenges in my career, given how my role has changed here in recent months,” Ross said.

“I wish the new management, the team and the club all the best, and thank everyone for the time I’ve spent with Motherwell.”

Ross, who also made seven appearances for the club during his playing career, arrived at Fir Park with coaching experience as a manager in Norway, where he won back-to-back promotions with FK Sola, and in the Faroe Islands.

“First of all, I would like to thank Maurice for his commitment and professionalism since I joined the club,” manager Graham Alexander said of the departure.

“I can understand why he’s made this decision. I have nothing but good wishes for him going forward. I am sure he will continue to have a successful coaching career.”
