    Suicide Prevention Lanarkshire app launched

    Suicide Prevention Lanarkshire app launched

A handy new smartphone app has been launched to provide practical support for people who are having suicidal thoughts or who may know someone who is.

The Suicide Prevention in Lanarkshire app is packed with useful information to help keep people safe and provide guidance on how to look out for others you may be concerned about.

Details about training and awareness sessions, facts and myths around suicide, how to start the conversation about suicide, and how to access crucial support helplines and much more.

The app has been created in partnership with both North and South Lanarkshire Council’s suicide prevention initiatives.

Download the Suicide Prevention Lanarkshire app from your mobile device app store by searching for SP Lanarkshire.

“This newly designed app will provide a valuable resource for people concerned about suicide,” Lynne McDonald, Suicide Prevention Lead in North Lanarkshire explained.

“People can use it if they are having thoughts of suicide, or if they are concerned about someone else who may be considering suicide.

“It offers a number of features providing practical information and support which could prove vital. ‘Let’s Talk’ is the message we want to get across as we try to encourage people to talk more openly about suicide so we can all work together to help prevent it.”

Paul Kelly, Depute Leader of North Lanarkshire Council added: “It is so important that we keep raising awareness about suicide prevention in our communities. The emotional impact on families, friends and communities bereaved by suicide is devastating and can have awful long-lasting effect on those left behind.

“This newly developed app will help with our efforts here in Lanarkshire to raise public awareness about suicide prevention.”

We are long-standing partners of Suicide Prevention North Lanarkshire.

“It is important we continue to talk about suicide and do everything we can to help people who are considering suicide,” Alan Burrows, chief executive of Motherwell FC, said.

“Suicide affects so many families in this area and has had a direct impact on our supporters’ families over recent years.

“We want everyone to know that support is out there, and to encourage people to talk openly.”

The 2020/21 season ends on Sunday, as Ross County visit Fir Park.

    Kick-off is at 12pm.

    What’s at stake

For Motherwell, victory will seal seventh spot in the Premiership and a placing as the top team in the bottom six.

Ross County are in pole position to guarantee their top-flight safety going into the match. A draw will mean they finish 10th, and clear of a play-off spot.

Should they lose, only a win for Kilmarnock against Hamilton will mean the Staggies drop to 11th.

    Tale of the tape

Motherwell are 2-1 up in wins from the three encounters between the clubs so far this season.

Graham Alexander’s men are on consecutive victories, winning 2-1 in Dingwall last time out and then 4-0 at Fir Park back in October.

    Form guide

Motherwell have now lost one in 90 minutes from 11 matches, with their only defeat coming against Kilmarnock, paired with a penalty shootout loss to Hibernian in the Scottish Cup.

County’s 2-1 win over Hamilton on Wednesday night ensured they won’t finish bottom of the Premiership.

They’ve now won back-to-back league matches, picking up seven points from a possible 15 in their last five games.

Win for ‘Well at Forfar in SWPL1

Win for ‘Well at Forfar in SWPL1

Motherwell gained a brilliant three points on the road in a 1-0 win over Forfar Farmington.

Jade Gallon’s first-half goal closed the gap between the two teams to two points, as the season races to its climax.

An-end-to-end game saw chances for either team in both halves.

Forfar started the quicker of the two teams, which saw them with several set pieces and corners into the Motherwell box to put pressure on the away team.

However, it was a set-piece for Motherwell the saw the only goal of the game.

A perfectly delivered ball from Chelsie Watson was met by on-loan midfielder Gallon, who expertly looped a header back across the goal past the helpless Forfar goalkeeper with 20 minutes played.

The remainder for the half saw Motherwell have the better of the chances, with shots from Lori Gardner, Abby Callaghan and Gill Inglis either blocked or just going by the post.

Watson then almost had a goal of her own before the interval, only for her free-kick to slam off the bar.

Both teams cancelled each other out for large spells of the second half.

Motherwell had the better of the play – and the majority of the ball – but without creating anything clear cut.

Towards the end, and with the game becoming frantic, Forfar began to create half chances.

Goalkeeper Lauren McGregor pulled off a couple of fine saves to ensure the game would not end differently, and see the women of steel pick up another valuable three points.

    Dundee United 2-2 Motherwell

    Dundee United 2-2 Motherwell

Motherwell staged another two-goal comeback to take a point in a 2-2 draw at Dundee United.

Tyler Magloire replaced Declan Gallagher in defence in the only change to the starting team, with Scott Fox returning on the bench after missing the vast majority of the season through injury.

Graham Alexander’s men headed to Tannadice looking to exorcise the demons from the last-gasp draw inflicted on them on Boxing Day, but would suffer an early blow.

Allan Campbell appeared to twist his ankle in a 50-50 challenge and, despite treatment, was forced off after six minutes in what was due to be his penultimate appearance for the club before a summer departure.

With ‘Well missing him, it would be the visitors who would take the lead soon after. Chalmers’ shot from distance took a hit off Shankland on the way to goal, wrongfooting goalkeeper Kelly and nestling in the net.

Motherwell would continue to push. Hastie curled an effort wide from inside the box, and Long’s running was carving him out chances, one which dropped particularly close past the far post.

Then, with 17 minutes gone, ‘Well would undo their positive work. A defensive lapse saw Magloire fell his man in the area, giving Shankland the chance to make it two from the spot.

The Scotland international however saw ‘keeper Kelly guess correctly but his dive was not required, with Shankland dragging the ball past the left post.

A facial blow to Campbell replacement Crawford left Motherwell down to 10 men for spells in the midway point of the half but the men in blue held firm against waves of United pressure.

That dam would burst shortly after the half-hour mark.

Quick play down the right from United led to youngster Meekison being in space outside the box on the right. Picking his spot, he curled well past Kelly into the bottom-left corner of the net.

Motherwell continued to push, with Long’s running causing particular trouble, but the two teams would go in at the break having suffered contrasting fortunes.

The second half would start more positively. Long’s tireless endeavour continued to take the visitors up the park, and he would get his rewards 10 minutes into the half.

Advancing into the area, he tied his man in knots on the left before rifling a shot from 10 yards in at the near post through the ‘keeper.

Both sides would continue to trade blows, with Hastie coming closest in the mid part of the match, seeing his shot from a tight angle blocked.

Then, in stoppage time, the breakthrough came. With most in the box, goalkeeper sent a free-kick from the halfway line into the area.

Lamie rose brilliantly to flick it on and Cole stole in to smash the ball home to equalise and earn a hard-fought point.
