    Abby Callaghan departs

Forward Abby Callaghan has left Motherwell, with her contract being cancelled by mutual consent.

The 20-year-old joined the women of steel in the summer of 2019 from Stirling University and went on to enjoy two full seasons in the claret and amber.

The club would like to thank Abby for her efforts and wish her well for the future.

Tony Watt is your August player of the month

Tony Watt is your Paycare Motherwell FC player of the month for August.

The striker netted three goals in the month, as Motherwell picked up 10 points form a possible 15 in the cinch Premiership.

His first came away to St Johnstone in a 1-1 draw, before his equaliser set the team on their way to a comeback 2-1 win at Livingston.

His goal against Dundee at the end of the month was enough to secure a 1-0 win, and a first home league victory of the season.

Steven Hammell inducted to Hall of Fame

Steven Hammell inducted to Hall of Fame

Steven Hammell is to become the latest inductee to the Motherwell FC Hall of Fame.

One of our delayed 2020 inductees, the club legend takes his place alongside John Hunter, Davie Cooper and Andy Paton.

Having played 583 games in claret and amber, Hammell is Motherwell’s post-war record appearance holder.

Hammell started his professional career at Fir Park in January 1998. He made his debut in 2000, starting in a Scottish Premier League match against Aberdeen at the age of 18.

Playing 242 times across seven seasons between 1999 and 2006, he established himself as a club stalwart and was part of the side which reached the 2005 League Cup final against Rangers.

In 2006, he departed for a short spell in England with Southend United, spending 18 months south of the border and making 55 appearances before returning to Motherwell in January 2008.

A testimonial would follow against Everton in 2012, with a star-studded Toffees side being held 1-1 at Fir Park.

A further 341 appearances would be made in claret and amber by Hammell, as Motherwell went through a prolific period of finishing both second and third in the league, reaching the qualifying stages of both the UEFA Champions league and UEFA Europa League.

Hammell would go on to make 23 appearances in European football for Motherwell, a feat that no other player has matched.

He was also a member of the starting team which reached the 2011 Scottish Cup final, and was in the squad for the 2017 League Cup final, but a trophy would prove elusive before he brought the curtain down on his career at Fir Park in a league match against Ross County in January 2018.

He won full international recognition with Scotland back in 2004, when the late Tommy Burns capped him in a friendly match against Sweden at Easter Road, and was a member of several Scotland squads.

Steven retired after a distinguished 20-year playing career in January 2018, taking up the important role as academy director at the club, rearing the next batch of graduates to follow in his footsteps.

Our Hall of Fame will welcome its new inductees in a special event in November.

Taking place at the Bothwell Bridge Hotel on Saturday 13 November, the event will induct the classes of 2020 and 2021.

The event is priced at £60 for adults and £30 for children aged under 12.

We will induct both the 2020 and 2021 intake at the event.

Buy your tickets online here now.

Current Hall of Famers include George Stevenson, Willie Pettigrew, Phil O’Donnell, Ally Maxwell and James McFadden.

Making changes to our club badge

Making changes to our club badge

We’ve made some changes to our club badge.

The changes are largely subtle but important to ensuring our club badge is professional and consistent.

They also bring it back closer to the original design, which had suffered from reinterpretations over the years.

    Geometry

We first started by noticing subtle errors contained within the design of the badge.

Some were small anomalies, such as the letter R in Motherwell being too small in comparison to the other letters in the MOTHERWELL FC part of the badge.

Our badge is based on two ribbons at the top and bottom. On closer inspection, these needed redrawn as the thicknesses at the ends were inconsistent and too thick.

Around the outside of the badge, the claret outline was also of uneven thickness. Additionally, the lettering on both ribbons was not on the correct arc, and we readjusted this.

Perhaps most importantly, our badge was not a perfect circular shape. We also fixed this.

    Steelworks

The biggest and most obvious update to the badge is the steelworks.

Through many years of our badge being redrawn, the detail on the steelworks has been lost.

The steelworks shape on the new version has now been digitalised from the original badge.

Due to Covid restrictions at Ibrox, no away fans will be allowed into the ground.

Our live beamback to our Cooper Bar is now sold out.

    Watch live

Alternatively, fans in the UK can buy a live stream direct from Rangers for £9.99.

International viewers can watch through our subscription service at live.motherwellfc.co.uk. Packages start at as little as £12.50 per month to watch all 38 cinch Premiership fixtures.

    Tale of the tape

It’s well-told tale that Motherwell’s last league win at Ibrox came back in May 1997, with Owen Coyle netting a double.

Rangers have won the last five in the league at Ibrox against ‘Well, with the visitors’ last positive result on Premiership business coming in a 1-1 draw in April 2017.

Last time out, Devante Cole’s opener was cancelled out by Cedric Itten’s equaliser in a draw at Fir Park in January.

    Form guide

Rangers sit top of the league with 12 points, with four wins from five matches so far.

Victories over Livingston, Ross County, Celtic and St Johnstone have put them in the driving seat, with the one loss coming away at Dundee United.

Motherwell started the season with a narrow defeat to Hibernian and a draw at St Johnstone, before picking up a succession of wins over Livingston, Dundee and Aberdeen.

Graham Alexander’s men sit fourth, two points behind the leaders, with five games played.

    Partick Thistle next in SWPL1

    Partick Thistle next in SWPL1

Motherwell face newly-promoted Partick Thistle on Sunday at Petershill Football Centre.

The Glasgow side finished in third place in the SWPL2 last season and missed out on promotion.

However, due to Forfar Farmington’s withdrawal from the SWPL1 at the start of the season, Thistle were moved up into the top flight.

    Kick off is 1pm.

    Fixture change

Celtic were due to be our opponents on Sunday 19 September in SWPL1.

Due to international call ups within the Celtic camp, the fixture has been postponed and will be played at a later date, and the fixture with Thistle from 26 September has been brought forward.

A further update will be provided in due course on our rearranged fixture against Celtic.

    Tale of the Tape

Motherwell are unbeaten in their previous two meetings with Thistle.

The sides last met in 2020 in the SWPL Cup, where the women of steel ran out comfortable 6-1 winners.

Prior to that, their last encounter was in 2019 in the SWF Scottish Cup, where the game was taken to extra time and The ’Well progressed after winning 2-0.

    Form Guide

Both Partick Thistle and Motherwell are looking for their first points of the SWPL1 campaign.

Thistle played their opening league match on Sunday against promoted side Aberdeen, where they fell to a 2-0 defeat.

The Jags finished second in their SWPL Cup group and qualified for the next round, where they will face champions Glasgow City.

Motherwell will be looking to get off the mark in the new campaign after a tricky start against Glasgow City and Hibernian, where they lost 6-0 and 4-0 respectively.

    No away fans at Ibrox

    No away fans at Ibrox

Motherwell fans will not be able to buy tickets for our weekend trip to face Rangers.

Our opponents have advised us that, due to ongoing restrictions at Ibrox, no away allocation will be sent for Sunday’s match.

Having initially been declined an allocation, subsequent dialogue led to Rangers providing us with a detailed explanation that, due to the displacement of some supporters due to a Covid “red zone”, an away section is not possible.

While regrettable that no Motherwell fans can attend, we accept that Covid restrictions have led to an unavoidable situation.

Instead, we will be showing the game live at Fir Park. Our live beamback to our Cooper Bar is now sold out.
