    Club Statement: Kilmarnock game

Motherwell FC’s SPFL Premiership match with Kilmarnock has been postponed due to storm damage at Fir Park Stadium.

Recent heavy winds have made several areas unsafe and after agreement with the SPFL and Saturday’s opponents, the game will be rearranged for later in the season.

Safety and Facilities Manager Alan Marshall said: “Some of the aluminium facings on the side of the East Stand have been blown off by the wind, making the adjacent panels unsecure.

“Should any others come detached whilst people are in the Stadium, it could pose a real threat to the safety of not only the players and officials on the park, but the spectators inside the ground.

“We have tried everything we can to rectify the issue but have been thwarted by either more high winds or snow. Sadly, it would be impossible to not only secure the panels that are visibly hanging loose, but also to check all others in the same area in time for kick-off on Saturday. If another fell and hit someone, the consequences would be unthinkable.

“Regretfully, I have had to insist on the match being postponed to allow us sufficient time to make safe that particular concern, and other areas of more minor storm damage to both the Davie Cooper and Maxim Office Park Stands too.”

‘Well boss Ian Baraclough said: “It’s frustrating but at the same time, the health and safety of everyone inside the ground has got to be the number one consideration.

“We’ll have the players in training tomorrow and work has already begun preparing for this Wednesday night’s match against Celtic.”

The game will now be played on Saturday 7th March 2015 (3pm KO)

    Beaton in charge against Killie

Referee for Saturday’s SPFL Premiership clash with Kilmarnock at Fir Park is John Beaton.

John will be handling his first Motherwell match of the campaign so far but will be a familiar face, being one of the up-and-coming elite referees and someone who handled four matches last term.

His first was the league game against Aberdeen, when they travelled to Fir Park back in August 2013; Derek McInnes side taking all three points in a 3-1 win.

The game wasn’t without controversy with Beaton, a late replacement for Kevin Clancy, awarding the Dons two spot kicks, although it was certainly a win the visitors deserved for their second half showing.

His next was also against the Dons, when ‘Well disappointingly crashed out the League Cup despite dominating for the majority of the match.

Next was almost exactly twelve months ago as ‘Well smashed four past St Johnstone without reply on New Years Day.

Most recently was a comprehensive 4-1 win over Hearts at Fir Park back in March as goals from Vigurs, Ainsworth, Sutton and McFadden secured the win.

The 32-year old also took charge of two Motherwell matches last term too. The first was a 1-1 draw with Dundee at Fir Park; Michael Higdon rescuing a point after Nicky Reilly had given the Dark Blues a surprise lead midway through the first half.

His other match that campaign was against Dundee United at Tannadice, the Steelmen running rampant in the City of Discovery, confirming second spot with a superb 3-1 win.

Not only did Michael Higdon open the scoring with a peach from distance, the big striker surpassed Willie Pettigrew’s post-war record for most top-league goals in a single season when he netted the third midway through the second half.

His overall record reads three wins, two defeats and a draw from six matches. ‘Well have scored thirteen and conceded eight. Twenty-two players have gone into the book, twelve of them wearing Claret and Amber, with just one red card (Joe Shaughnessy in that Dons League Cup tie last season).

John will be ably assisted by David McGeachie and Douglas Ross with Bobby Madden on Fourth Official duties. Referee observers are George Clyde and Tom Murphy, SPFL Delegate is Alan Dick.

    Under 20s game postponed

Today’s Under 20s match with Hearts at the Excelsior Stadium has been postponed due to the snow.

A flurry had left the pitch and surrounding areas covered and after an inspection today at 11.20am, it was deemed unlikely both areas could be cleared in time to make safe for both players and spectators.

No date has been set for the rearranged match.

    TV: Baraclough demands better

An angry Ian Baraclough has demanded his players take more responsibility in the aftermath of their 4-1 loss at Dens Park.

Dundee were helped by early goals from Alex Harris and Greg Stewart before John Sutton pulled one back for the visitors, only for Gary Irvine to restore the home team’s two-goal advantage.

Motherwell had Henrik Ojamaa sent-off for an lash out at Kevin Thomson just before half-time and they lost a further goal in 71 minutes when Marc O’Brien turned the ball into his own net.

It was a miserable afternoon for the Fir Parkers, particularly with the manner in which goals were conceded, and Baraclough believes players have not only got to demand more of themselves, but each other.

[pullquote]You’ve got to be responsible for not only your own game, but for other people’s as well and you have stay as a group together and demand the best from each other.[/pullquote]

He said: “We talk from the start of the week and building up to match day about having a good start, getting a foothold in the game, making it difficult for your opponents, being on the front foot and after eight minutes you’re two-nil down.

“It is not acceptable that mistakes keep happening.

“It is no coincidence that we are where we are and it’s not just in my time, it’s been happening for a good part of the season as well.

“I’ve just said to the players there you’ve got to be responsible for not only your own game, but for other people’s as well and you have stay as a group together and demand the best from each other.

“It’s an easy thing to say you’d like to change a load (of players), but the fact is we haven’t got big pots of money to go and overhaul and the players that are in the dressing room at the moment are the ones that have got to dig themselves out.”

    Dundee 4 – 1 Motherwell

    [tab:Match report]

    Gavin McCafferty at Dens Park

10-man Motherwell crashed to a desperately disappointing 4-1 defeat at Dens Park this afternoon.

The Tayside club were helped by early goals from Alex Harris and Greg Stewart before John Sutton pulled one back for the visitors, only for Gary Irvine to restore the home team’s two-goal advantage.

Ian Baraclough’s Motherwell had Henrik Ojamaa sent-off for an elbow on Kevin Thomson just before half-time and they lost a further goal in 71 minutes when Marc O’Brien turned the ball into his own net.

The Steelmen made two changes to the side that were beaten by Aberdeen last Sunday. Luke Watt and Fraser Kerr dropped out, replaced by the returning Stuart Carswell and Dom Thomas, making his full debut.

Dundee boss Paul Harteley made one change to the home line up with new signing Kosta Gadzhalov replacing the injured James McPake in defence.

With ‘Well confidence fragile, the manager’s message before the game would have been to keep it tight in the early exchanges. It would be despair on the bench then when Dundee went ahead after just three minutes when on-loan Hibernian man Harris saw his shot deflect off Stephen McManus and past Dan Twardzik.

Inside eight minutes it was 2-0 as ‘Well’s defensive woes continued. The backline was too square, after after David Clarkson flicked the ball on to Stewart, the striker headed in his own rebound after shooting against the bar.

The Dark Blues looked by far the more comfortable but it was the Steelmen who hit back with a 19th-minute goal which made it 2-1.

A run down the right by Josh Law ended with a cross to the near post, which Sutton calmly knocked past the diving Scott Bain in the Dundee goal.

Dundee continued to push and newboy Gadzhalov almost got amongst the goals after meeting a Thomson corner with a downwards header, but ‘Well just about managed to sweep It clear.
The visitors then had Twardzik to thank for a stunning double save, firstly from David Clarkson and then Harris.

Incredibly though, from the resulting corner, the former Dee’s keeper gifted Irvine a third goal. Stewart’s corner looked easy enough for the Czech stopper, but he dropped it and Irvine could not believe his luck, being in the right place to lash the ball high into the net from point-blank range.

Things got even worse in 44 minutes when Estonian Henrik Ojamaa was shown a straight red card by referee Stephen Finnie for lashing out at Thomson. Television replays showed that contact was fairly minimal, but in the modern game, it would be difficult, and churlish, to argue with the decision.

Things stayed much the same after the break with the home team making clever use of the extra man, and Clarkson almost extended their lead in the 51st minute, only to see his dipping shot from outside the penalty area go inches wide of the target.

Shortly after, Paul McGowan laid the ball into the path of Stewart, whose curling shot was not far wide of Twardzik’s right-hand post.

Stewart then released Harris down the left in another swift attack but substitute Luka Tankulic could not connect with his cross.

Dundee rounded things off with a fortuitous fourth goal when Tankulic’s shot prompted a collision between O’Brien and Twardzik, and before they could do anything it was 4-1 to the hosts.

It would sum up the absolutely miserable afternoon on Tayside. The Claret and Amber men will need to improve 100% and quickly.

    Motherwell  manager Ian Baraclough:

“We talk from the start of the week and building up to match day about having a good start, getting a foothold in the game, making it difficult for your opponents, being on the front foot – and after eight minutes you’re 2-0 down.

“But it’s not acceptable that mistakes keep happening. It’s no coincidence that we are where we are and it’s not just in my time since I’ve come here. It’s been happening for a good part of the season as well.

    Dundee manager Paul Hartley:

“I’m really pleased for the players. There were some good goals from the boys.

“We’ve got a 14-point gap over the two teams at the bottom and we want to make that gap as big as possible.

“It’s a good lead for us and then we just have to look at the other teams above us like St Johnstone who we’re four points behind.

“We got off to a really positive start. We said that to the players beforehand, that we had to take the game to Motherwell.

“I thought we done that and young Alex Harris played a big part in our result today. We scored some good goals and, to be honest, I was disappointed that we didn’t score more goals.

“We had enough of the ball especially in the second-half to do so but we’ve got to be happy with the result at the end of the day.”
