Introducing the defensive reinforcements for our Tennent’s Sixes team.

The event returns for the first time since 1993 and will take place at Braehead Arena on Saturday 3 and 4 October 2026.

Motherwell are in Group A alongside Hibernian, Hearts and Falkirk. The winner of each group and the runner-up of each group will progress to the knockout stages.

Richard Tait

Richard Tait will be putting the football boots back on as he takes his place in our Tennent’s Sixes side.

The full-back arrived from Grimsby Town in 2016 and was immediately appreciated by the MFC supports for his consistent hard work on the pitch.

He was part of the team that reached two cup finals in the 2017/18 season and played 142 games across four seasons, even though COVID-19 ended his fourth season early and he became a leader in the side.

Tait moved on in 2020 to play for St Mirren but went with the best wishes of all the Fir Park faithful.

Jim Paterson

Fondly remembered as ‘Step Over’, Jim Paterson joined his local club in 2004 from Dundee United and became a dependable and versatile player for the Steelmen.

He played just shy of 120 games for the club during his three-and-a-half-year stay and is currently coaching the next generation at Fir Park, having been named Head of Academy Coaching last year.

Mark Reynolds

Local boy Mark Reynolds impressed in the youth ranks and was given his first-team opportunity in the 2005/06 season. From there, he never looked back.

Making his debut against Livingston in 2006, Reynolds went on to play 201 times for the Steelmen. The 2007/08 season saw Reynolds feature in every match, playing 36 and 37 of the 38 league matches in the two seasons that followed.

Securing a seven-figure fee for the club when he moved south to Sheffield Wednesday, Reynolds was a dependable and resilient defender. Part of the team that finished third and secured European football, Reynolds burst onto the scene and quickly became an integral part of the team.

Simon Ramsden

Simon Ramsden had to earn his chance to play for Motherwell and did just that by impressing on trial before signing a one-year deal in 2012. Thrown into the deep end from the off, he played in the Champions League against Panathinaikos.

He played 29 league matches in that maiden season before committing his future for a further two years at Fir Park. He played 81 games in total, scoring his only goal against Dundee United in 2014.

His strong affiliation with the Steelmen has continued until present day, with Ramsden regularly visiting Fir Park for matches and is a familiar face in the stands supporting the club.

Apostolos Stamatelopoulos has left the club by mutual consent to pursue opportunities elsewhere.

The Australian forward arrived in Scotland two years ago and went on to play 45 times for the club. He scored 12 goals during his stay.

During his time at the Steelmen, he returned to Australia on loan with FC Sydney.

“I want to take this opportunity to thank the fans,” the striker said.

“Everyone associated with the club welcomed me with open arms and made me feel at home. The fans, staff and players have all been amazing during my stay in Scotland. This is football, and it’s the right time for me to move on.

“I wish everyone the very best for the season ahead. Thank you.”

We thank Apostolos for his efforts and wish him well for the future.

Graeme Smith enjoyed a four-year spell at Motherwell, with Terry Butcher bringing the goalkeeper to Fir Park from Rangers in 2005.

Playing 144 games during that time, Smith earned international recognition as he got his first Scotland call-up, represented Motherwell in their first European game in 13 years and played in a domestic cup final. He moved to Brighton in 2009, bringing the curtain down on a memorable stay in North Lanarkshire.

It was Motherwell’s 11th game in 37 days, as the curtain was brought down on a hectic schedule since the start of the season for Alfred Johansson’s side, and they were back on the road, facing Rangers at Ibrox. 

The Steelmen were looking for their fourth win at Ibrox in four seasons, but when Rangers took an early lead, Derek McInnes’ side didn’t look back.

Ryan Naderi scored the only goal of the game, but despite conceding a lot of chances, Motherwell remained in the fight right until the end but couldn’t quite find the leveller.

It’s time to rest and recover before facing Aberdeen next Tuesday night at Fir Park.

Despite an exceptional hard-fought display, the women of steel unfortunately succumbed to a three-nil defeat at the hands of the league leaders, Rangers on Sunday. 

An Ellie MacDonald own-goal broke the deadlock for the visitors seconds before half-time, with Hannah Blake doubling the advantage minutes into the second-half. 

Katie Wilkinson confidently dispatched a 93rd-minute penalty to secure the three-points. 

Head Coach, Iain Robinson named a reshaped starting XI, with goalkeeper Rebecca Cameron unavailable through injury. Emergency-loanee, Jenna Currie lined up in goal, with Shannon Leishman, Chelsie Watson, Ellie MacDonald, and Leah Sidey completing the backline. 

Lucy Ronald, Eva Thomson, Mary Stanić-Floody, Mason Clark, and Lucy Sinclair completed the midfield five, as Morgan Anderson led the line. Rangers loanees, Saoirse Coyle-Morrow and Mia McArthur were both unavailable to face their parent club. 

Despite a resolute defensive display, the deadlock broke seconds before the half-time whistle. A low drilled strike from the edge of the box ricocheted unfortunately off the boot of MacDonald, and the ball looped over the head of Currie before nestling into the back of the net. 

The second followed five-minutes into the second-half, as Blake rattled a right-footed strike high into the roof of the net, doubling the visitors advantage. 

In the final action of the game, substitute Kodie Hay was adjudged to have fouled Bailley Collins in the Motherwell penalty area. Despite the adamant pleas of the Motherwell players that Hay fairly won the ball, the referee stuck to his original decision. 

Wilkinson stepped up, and calmly converted, placing her right-footed strike into the bottom-left corner. 

Alfred Johansson reacts to defeat at Ibrox.

Motherwell’s unbeaten run in the William Hill Premiership came to an end at Ibrox on Saturday, with a goal from Ryan Naderi the difference between the sides. 

Alfred Johansson made three changes to the side that swept Dundee United aside on Wednesday night. Regan Charles-Cook and Ibrahim Said were restored the frontline, with Jake Girdwood-Reich replacing Jamie Knight-Lebel in defence.

Motherwell have enjoyed success in Govan in the last three years, picking up three wins in that time having not won their since 1997.

And the belief was apparent in the early stages from the Steelmen that they could emulate something similar on this occasion too, as they quickly racked up possession and successful passes. Said broke forward in the early stages, before finding Charles-Cook in the penalty area who headed over the bar.

There was then a lengthy delay as VAR appeared to have some technical issue, with both sets of players and supporters growing more inpatient at the delay. Rangers were then dealt a blow after eight minutes as captain Lawrence Shankland was forced off, with Naderi brought on in his place.

And the substitute made an impact four minutes after coming on. Martin Moormann played a pass back to keeper Alex Paulsen, the New Zealand international was dispossessed by the forward before tapping into the empty net. 12 minutes gone, 1-0 Rangers.

That early setback didn’t seem to negatively impact Motherwell’s approach to proceedings, who immediately looked for a response. There was some patient play on the edge of the Rangers penalty area before Joe Hodge set Tawanda Maswanhise on his left foot for a strike, but the effort was gathered by Ivor Pandur.

Djeidi Gassama then showed his pace and skill to carry the ball forward. The winger cut inside and had a shot at goal but Moormann was on hand to block with his foot.

Paulsen was then called into action as Minsu Kim tried to head into the bottom corner, but the keeper got down well to keep the scoreline at 1-0.

Former Rangers player Alex Lowry almost had his perfect return to Ibrox around the 25th minute, when he combined with Charles-Cook before faking a shot with his left foot, cutting onto his right and shooting straight at Pandur.

Duncan Nicholson pointed to the penalty spot just shy of the half-hour mark when Tom Sparrow was judged to have brought down Gassama just inside the area after the two players came together competing for a cross. Minsu stepped up from 12-yards but fired wide of the target.

Dujon Sterling then put an inviting cross into the Motherwell box, Gassama connected well with his head but Paulsen produced another brilliant save, with Moormann clearing the ball before Gassama had the opportunity for a rebound.

Lukas Fadinger then worked his way into the penalty area as he burst into the box but couldn’t get a strike away before losing possession.

Paulsen was just as sharp in the second-half when, after nine minutes after the interval, Minsu was once again denied by the shot-stopper, with James Penrice striking the post on the follow-up.

Motherwell were able to venture forward on the hour-mark, with half-time substitute Jardell Kanga threading the ball through for Maswanhise, but the shot wasn’t enough to seriously trouble Pandur who was well behind the effort.

Rangers continued to push and kill the game off. Five minutes later, Niko Raskin had to wait for the ball to drop before catching it sweetly on the volley. The Belgian beat Paulsen but Moormann had moved back onto the goal line and was able to block before the ball crossed it.

Fadinger uncharacteristically misplaced a pass in the penalty area from a Motherwell goal-kick, and Daisuke Yokota pounced. But the Rangers summer signing was off-balance as he struck and the ball went high and wide, with the Steelmen breathing a sigh of relief.

It really should have been 2-0 when Kevin Kelsy got on the end of a Penrice cutback, but the striker struck the bar with his effort.

The home crowd began to get nervous as the game edged closer to full-time, but Motherwell were unable to create a clear chance in the closing stages with Derek McInnes’ side able to claim the three points.

Our Ticket office will open 10am-12pm on Saturday for the sale of Rangers tickets.

Any uncollected tickets will be picked up by our SLO when we close at 12 noon and taken to the away turnstiles at Ibrox.

The Stadium opens 90 minutes prior to kick-off.

Cars travelling westbound from the direction of Glasgow City Centre on the M8 should exit at either Junction 24 (Helen Street), Junction 25 (Clyde Tunnel and in the direction of Cardonald) or Junction 26 (Hillington).

Cars travelling eastbound on the M8 should exit at either Junction 26 (Hillington), Junction 24 (Helen Street) or exit at Kinning Park where they can travel on to the M77 to come off at Junction 1 (Dumbreck Road) or left onto Seaward Street then Paisley Road West.

Drivers are encouraged to check local maps to plan an alternative route to Ibrox Stadium should Junction 24 (Helen Street) be congested.

On a matchday, Edmiston Drive at the front of the Stadium is closed 90 minutes before kick-off.

The road remains closed throughout the match and does not reopen until approximately 45 minutes to 1 hour after the final whistle, depending on activities outside the Stadium.

Food, within reason, is allowed into the Stadium. Soft drinks in small plastic bottles or flasks, aluminium cans and alcohol are NOT allowed into the Stadium.

If you are required to carry containers into the Stadium for medical purposes please contact the Safety Department ahead of your visit.

Tap water is available from the concessions. Please queue in the normal way and on request you will be given a cup of water.

Saturday is to be mostly dry in Glasgow, with temperatures of 17 degrees at 3pm.

Following an injury sustained in the opening competitive fixture of the season, we can now provide the following fitness update of Jenna Penman. 

Penman was forced off in the first round of the Sky Sports League Cup following an aerial challenge, with the defender experiencing exceptional discomfort after landing directly on her shoulder. 

Following scans, we can confirm that Penman has suffered a Grade 5 AC Joint tear – a serious shoulder injury whereby the collarbone is completely displaced – requiring the 23-year-old to receive surgery. 

Unfortunately, Penman has already been through this process in the past, after suffering an identical injury (Grade 3) against Glasgow City in the opening weekend of the Scottish Power Women’s Premier League last season, with the defender requiring surgery on the opposite shoulder then. 

The Scotland Under-23 International has now received surgery, and will begin her rehabilitation process in due course. Penman will be ruled out of action for several months.
