Charles Dunne signs new Motherwell deal

Charles Dunne has extended his stay at Motherwell.

The defender’s contract will now run until the summer, as he continues his rehabilitation from injury.

Having joined the club in 2017, the popular defender has made 77 appearances in claret and amber.

Injury has sidelined the 27-year-old since August 2019, but he is now back in light training as he continues his recovery and it is hoped the new deal will help him complete his journey back to action at Fir Park.

Robbie Crawford has extended his stay with the club until the end of the season.

The midfielder, who has made 11 appearances in claret and amber, originally joined on loan from Livingston in September.

Robbie will now make the switch to Fir Park on a permanent basis.

“We’re happy Robbie is staying on with us,” said manager Graham Alexander.

“He has shown he has the attributes to be a valuable member of our squad. He adds quality to the group and will be important for us in the coming months.”

    Tale of the tape

Motherwell have drawn one and lost one from the two encounters between the sides in the 2020/21 campaign.

Since United’s return to the top flight, a 1-0 loss at Fir Park and a last-minute denial of three points in a 1-1 away draw on Boxing Day have been the results.

Both sides have won two of the last five encounters between the sides, with Motherwell winning back-to-back games before United’s relegation in 2016.

    Form guide

The Steelmen ended a run of 13 games without a win when they came from behind to beat Ross County 2-1 last Wednesday.

At home in the Premiership, six games have passed without victory since the 4-0 win over County on 24 October.

United’s 2-0 home loss to Hibernian on Saturday made it seven without a win for Micky Mellon’s side.

On the road on league business, they are without a win in 10 matches, drawing six and losing four.

The midfielder signs from St Mirren, moving to Fir Park on a permanent basis.

“It’s great to finally get Sam over the line,” said ‘Well boss Graham Alexander of his new recruit.

“We’re looking for players who suit how we want to play and improve the strength of our group.

“Sam has the ability, experience and motivation to help us and we look forward to working with him on a daily basis.”

Foley, 34, started his career with Cheltenham Town and went on to spend time with Bath City, Kidderminster Harriers, Redditch United and Newport County earlier on in his career.

Having played almost 500 career games so far, he has also been on the books of Yeovil Town, Shrewsbury Town, Port Vale and Northampton Town, lining up alongside Christopher Long and Harry Smith with the Cobblers.

    Ross County 1-2 Motherwell

    Ross County 1-2 Motherwell

Motherwell claimed a big three points with a comeback 2-1 victory at Ross County.

Oli Shaw’s first-half opener sent Motherwell in at the break on a downer. But a rallying second half saw goals from Devante Cole and Bevis Mugabi seal the win.

Graham Alexander made two changes to the team defeated at Aberdeen on Saturday. The suspended Liam Polworth dropped out for Barry Maguire, with Sherwin Seedorf moving to the bench with Christopher Long preferred.

Motherwell had a succession of early corners, and plenty of early possession, but failed to test Ross Laidlaw before the opener came for the hosts.

With 13 minutes gone, a hopeful ball forward saw Hylton nick in beyond Gallagher. Bearing down on goal, his shot was at Kelly but squirmed away into the path of Shaw, who had the easy chance to slot the ball home from close range.

Motherwell continued to have bouts of possession but the first half petered out with neither side getting a shot on goal.

That switched early in the second period as Motherwell levelled the scores.

O’Donnell’s ball down the right allowed Long to spin his man down the right side. Feeding Watt on the edge of the box, the striker saw his shot parried by goalkeeper Laidlaw.

Cole read the situation, arriving round the back to nick in before the sprawling ‘keeper and steer the ball into the empty net.

The game opened up. Crawford and Watt went close for the visitors, while substitute Gardyne went agonisingly close to restoring County’s advantage, seeing a drive just go past the post.

‘Well would take the lead with 18 minutes left. Carroll’s corner from the left held up perfectly in the air, with Mugabi rising highest to steer his header into the top right corner.

McGinley and Lamie were sent on as the Steelmen defended for their lives at the end, holding on for a valuable three points.

Motherwell: Kelly, O’Donnell, Gallagher, Mugabi, Carroll, Campbell, Maguire, Crawford, Cole (McGinley), Long (Smith), Watt (Lamie).

Subs: Morrison, Cornelius, MacIver, Seedorf, Hastie, Lawless, Johnston.

    Storylines: Ross County v Motherwell

Motherwell are immediately back on their travels on Wednesday, heading north to face Ross County.

Here’s the topics going into the Scottish Premiership match.

    Searching for a victory

Motherwell go searching for a first league victory since 31 October when they head to Dingwall.

The 2-0 win at Livingston on Hallowe’en has been followed by five draws and seven defeats in the league since.

    Clash at the bottom

Ross County sit 10th in the Premiership on 20 points, a point ahead of Motherwell and having played two games more.

With Hamilton Academical on 19 points at the bottom of the table, the onus is on both sides to try and find a win to try and lift themselves away from danger and closer to Kilmarnock, who sit seventh on 24 points.

    Clocking up the miles

Having made the long trip to face Aberdeen at the weekend past, the Steelmen are back on the road again for the longest away trip in the league to Dingwall.

Motherwell have had relative joy in recent trips to Dingwall, winning twice, drawing one and losing two of their last five.
