    Eddie Nolan signs for Motherwell

    Eddie Nolan has joined Motherwell.

The Republic of Ireland international defender moves from Crewe Alexandra on loan until the end of the 2020/21 season.

“Eddie is a vastly experienced defender and we’re glad to have him,” said manager Graham Alexander of his deadline day acquisition.

“I’ve faced him many times with my previous teams and know what he will bring.

“He can slot in anywhere across the back four, giving us good competition across all the defensive line.”

The 32-year-old started his career in the English Premier League with Blackburn Rovers, spending time on loan at Stockport County, Hartlepool United and Preston North End.

A permanent move to Deepdale followed, with further loan spells at Sheffield Wednesday and Scunthorpe United, with the latter leading to another permanent move.

Nolan has more recently spent time with York City, Blackpool and Crewe, contributing to his 354 professional appearances to date.

“He will give us options in the front line, being able to play anywhere across the front three.

“He’s quick, wants to run in behind and adds to the firepower we need this season.”

Roberts, 27, joined Hearts from Ipswich Town in the summer, having also spent time on loan at Gillingham and Lincoln City while on the books at Portman Road.

Starting his professional career at Aldershot Town, he has also spent time with Inverness Caledonian Thistle and Crawley Town.

    Tale of the tape

Motherwell have drawn one and lost one from the two encounters between the sides in the 2020/21 campaign.

Since United’s return to the top flight, a 1-0 loss at Fir Park and a last-minute denial of three points in a 1-1 away draw on Boxing Day have been the results.

Both sides have won two of the last five encounters between the sides, with Motherwell winning back-to-back games before United’s relegation in 2016.

    Form guide

The Steelmen ended a run of 13 games without a win when they came from behind to beat Ross County 2-1 last Wednesday.

At home in the Premiership, six games have passed without victory since the 4-0 win over County on 24 October.

United’s 2-0 home loss to Hibernian on Saturday made it seven without a win for Micky Mellon’s side.

On the road on league business, they are without a win in 10 matches, drawing six and losing four.
