Motherwell have secured the signatures of Rangers pair Laura McCartney and Eilidh Martin on season-long loan deals.

The pair, a midfielder and defender respectively, will don the claret and amber for the upcoming SWPL1 campaign.

Laura McCartney

Goalscoring midfielder McCartney has featured and trained with the Rangers first team.

She will be looking for regular first-team action this season and a chance to impress.

“Laura is a great addition to the squad,” head coach Paul Brownlie said.

“She comes with real quality and will be with us for the season, which will help aid her development.

“She is a hugely exciting addition to the squad.”

Eilidh Martin

Also joining on a season-long loan from the Gers is young defender Martin.

The 17-year-old can play at the heart of the defence or at full-back and promises to be a huge prospect this season.

“A versatile defender, with real quality, Eilidh will again strengthen our defensive unit,” Brownlie added.

“Despite her age, she has played at a high level and is a very clever player on the pitch.”

We’ll face Rangers, Aberdeen, Boroughmuir Thistle and Queen’s Park in the group stage of the 2021/22 SWPL Cup.

Paul Brownlie’s first competitive matches in charge will start with a home tie with Rangers on 15 August in Group A.

’Well will then travel north to face newly-promoted Aberdeen on 22 August.

On 25 August, a home tie against SWPL2 side Boroughmuir Thistle will come before rounding off the group stages with a trip to face Queen’s Park on 29 August.

The two top teams in the group will qualify for the next round of the competition.

Confirmed dates, venues and kick-off times will be made available shortly.

The Motherwell FC home kit for the 2021/22 season is now available to pre-order.

This year’s strip will mark our homecoming to Fir Park, after spending the last campaign without fans in the stadium.

This kit is all about the detail.

We know how important our colours are. Now it’s emblazoned on the inside of the neck too, with our necktape stating “claret and amber colours true”.

A new rubberised silicon badge allows for a sharper design, colour and increased comfort. Plus there’s claret and amber flashes throughout our kit on the collar and cuffs.

We return to claret shorts, with an amber side panel with white trim. The socks also have our claret, amber and white detail, with a claret top and amber bottom.

Not-for-profit health cash plan provider Paycare again sponsor our kit, while we continue to raise awareness of the importance of the anti-suicide message on our sleeve through North Lanarkshire Suicide Prevention. Glen’s Vodka also feature once again on the back of the neck.

The predominantly black kit, with amber throughout, will be worn by our teams as a change outfit in the new campaign.

Once again, the kit is rich with detail.

The amber pinstripe detail down the front of the kit is part of a strict two-colour design, with amber piping throughout the shirt, shorts and socks.

Under the hood, the necktape adds an extra layer of detail, with the words “Since I was young, I followed on” emblazoned on the inside.

Manufactured again by Macron, the shirt also features our main sponsor Paycare and fellow partners Glen’s Vodka and G4 Claims, as well as our ongoing partnership with North Lanarkshire Suicide Prevention.

Our squad numbers for the 2021/22 season have been set.

Notable changes include the moves to number five for Bevis Mugabi and six for Barry Maguire, as well as Steven Lawless taking the number 11 jersey and Stephen O’Donnell switching to number two.

New signings Kaiyne Woolery, Justin Amaluzor and Connor Shields take seven, 17 and 29 respectively.

Motherwell 2021/22 squad numbers

Abby Skelton, Rachel Connor and Claire Adams have renewed terms for the upcoming SWPL1 season.

The trio, who play on the wing, at full-back and in midfield respectively, will be with Paul Brownlie’s side for the kick-off of the campaign in August.

“Our rebuilding process is well under way for this coming season,” Brownlie said.

“We want Motherwell in the best position come August.

“To get the commitment from the current squad shows just how much each of them have bought into the positive changes happening here at the club.

“I’m extremely happy Abby, Rachel and Claire have committed themselves to Motherwell for another season.”

Abby Skelton

Returning for her second season in claret and amber, Abby Skelton has renewed terms for another campaign.

The pacy winger will look to cement her place in the starting side this season.

“I’m really looking forward to the new season at Motherwell and working under experienced coaches,” she said.

“When I heard Paul being announced as head coach, I knew the standard of coaching would be high this season and it’s a real positive step for Motherwell going forward.”

Rachel Connor

Twenty-year-old Rachel Connor has also signed on for another season.

A reliable full-back in 2020/21, Connor will be looking to improve her game once again in the new campaign.

“I’m delighted to be renewing my stay at Motherwell,” she said.

“I’m looking forward to pushing on and developing as a team with Paul coming in.”

Claire Adams

One of the longest-serving players in the squad, midfielder Adams remains at the club for her third season at Motherwell.

“I’m delighted to have re-signed for Motherwell again this season,” she said.

“I know Paul really well. I am looking forward to working with him again, and excited for the challenges ahead.”

Motherwell B will face Stranraer in the first round of the SPFL Trust Trophy.

The young Steelmen will be away in the tie, which will be played on 10/11 August 2021.

The venue and kick-off time will be confirmed shortly.

Should they progress, ‘Well will host Partick Thistle on September 4/5.

Twelve players have graduated from our youth academy to sign professional terms with the club.

At the back, 17-year-old New Zealand-born goalkeeper Lawton Green is joined by left-back Ewan Wilson and central defenders Sam Campbell, Logan Dunachie and Ali Gould.

In midfield, Adam MacDonald, Kian Speirs and Daniel Hunter all make the step up after rising through from the early age groups.

Forwards Corey O’Donnell and Cody McLeod featured for the first team in the friendly at Dumbarton on Saturday, and turn professional this summer alongside fellow attackers Muhammad Adam and Richard Tambwe.

“We’re delighted for all the boys stepping up and signing professional terms,” Motherwell’s academy director Steven Hammell said.

“We’re excited to see what they have to offer. Every single one of them have plenty of motivation as how their careers can now progress at this club.

“It’s over to them now to continue their development. With the coaching on offer and the people around them who can help them succeed, we’re hopeful they will now show the attitude and application to take their chance.”

Liam Kelly made his return to Motherwell on Monday, signing on a permanent basis from QPR.

Here to stay

Having been on loan last campaign, Kelly has now signed a three-year deal at Fir Park.

Taking the number one jersey, the move on a permanent basis is a coup for the club and an important step in manager Graham Alexander’s recruitment plans.

Pivotal figure

From 21 appearances for the Steelmen in his first spell, Kelly kept seven clean sheets and was a vital match winner on many occasions, with a succession of important saves.

Held in high regard

Despite only making the move on loan from QPR in January, Kelly’s performances earned him the accolade of being voted the players’ player of the season at Motherwell in 2020/21.

His genuine surprise – and pride – at being named was captured on camera after the final game of the season, and was a well-earned prize after quickly becoming an influential figure on and off the pitch.

International hopes

After impressing in the Premiership with Livingston in 2018/19, the ‘keeper rightly earned a call into the Scotland squad for Euro qualifiers against Kazakhstan and San Marino.

Kelly had to make do with a place on the bench for both matches, but no doubt remains in the thoughts of the national team going into the next round of FIFA World Cup qualifying matches.

Keeping it in the family

The goalkeeper’s family are also involved in football. His brother Sean – a defender – is with Falkirk, having previously been with Ross County, AFC Wimbledon and St Mirren.

His younger brother is also in St Mirren’s academy as a goalkeeper.
