Brian Caldwell’s first interview as Chief Executive

Brian Caldwell was announced as the club’s new Chief Executive earlier this month, and he has now completed a very busy and hectic first week.

In this interview Caldwell provides a more detailed insight into his career to date and what the process was like as he became the new CEO.

He provides his ideas for the short-term and long-term at Motherwell Football Club and what he hopes to achieve in his time here.

Earlier this week, it was announced that talks with a US investor were moving to the next stage with the Board and Caldwell discusses the timeline of events that are soon to follow as well as his views on working in partnership with the Well Society.

A man who is keen to get the message across about his enthusiasm for fan engagement, Caldwell also keeps supporters up to date with regards to our match against Dundee this weekend.

Stephen O’Donnell named March Player of the month

Stephen O’Donnell named March Player of the month

Stephen O’Donnell is your G4 claims player of the month for March.

Arriving in August 2020, this is the first time the Scotland internationalist has won the award.

A crucial part of the backline in our historic win at Ibrox at the start of the month, he produced a fine display as well as a strong work rate.

He set up Theo Bair for his goal against St Mirren, with a composed and cushioned header back across goal from Jack Vale’s cross.

Available for every match this season, O’Donnell’s professional approach and attitude has seen him deployed in numerous areas of the pitch. Empty the tank in every match this month, alongside an assist, has seen him named your March player of the month.

    Update on Dens Park

    Update on Dens Park

Dundee have held a precautionary pitch inspection at Dens Park this afternoon and at present time, the pitch has passed that inspection.

Rain covers are now going on the pitch to try and limit water onto the playing surface. It is likely the covers will stay down on the pitch until Saturday morning.

Depending on the weather, we expect a further pitch inspection to be arranged on Saturday morning.

Updates will be communicated to supporters as soon as we receive them from Dundee.

Georgie Gent looks ahead to Dundee

Georgie Gent says he has matured as a player but also as a man during his time at the club. On loan from Blackburn, this was his first taste of first-team football and he says it has been a massive benefit to his career.

Gent claims during the tough moments and the good, his teammates have helped him through everything.

    Stuart Kettlewell previews Dundee

Stuart Kettlewell is encouraged by the recent news of investment talks reaching the next stage, but insists that it has not altered any plans as yet for his playing budget. Kettlewell has also undertaken his first discussions with new Chief Executive Brian Caldwell, saying he has achieved a lot in his career and is looking forward to working together.

Looking ahead to Dundee, Kettlewell is not surprised that Tony Docherty has got his team playing well but knows games against the Dee this season have been closely fought and is expecting, once again, that to be the case on Saturday.

    Agreement with US-based investor

The Executive Board of the Club would like to confirm that investment discussions with a US-based family have reached the point where both parties wish to move forward to the next stage and have therefore entered into an agreement on a non binding Heads of Terms.

Both parties will now work on formalising these into a legal framework which can be put to a shareholders vote.

The investor has expressed his desire to work in partnership with the Well Society.

The process of formalising the Heads of Terms is likely to take around six weeks and we will keep you updated on progress.

    Injury Update

Callum Slattery, Harry Paton, Barry Maguire and Jon Obika will all be absent for this match.

    Motherwell’s Fortunes

Motherwell still have a very slim chance of making top six, but will require maximum points and some favour elsewhere.

Theo Bair’s equaliser earned the Steelmen a point last time out against St Mirren, which leaves them six points off of Dundee.

That result means it’s two wins, a draw and a defeat in the last four matches for Stuart Kettlewell’s men, leaving them on 33 points for the season.

Matches against Dundee have been tight this season, on the opening day, Motherwell drew at Dens Park after Bair’s opener. It was the late, late show for the Steelmen in the reverse fixture. Finding themselves 3-2 down and with ten men. But Conor Wilkinson’s late strike earned a late point for the ‘Well.

    Opposition Report

In their first season back in the top flight, Dundee are firmly in the hunt for top-six. They won their last two matches against St Johnstone and Aberdeen, making it two wins, a draw and two defeats in their last five.

They’re on 39 points, with three games to play before the split.

Lyall Cameron has been a consistent performer for Tony Docherty’s side this season. In his most recent match, he scored his fifth goal of the season.

Leaving it difficult for top-six // Motherwell 1-1 St Mirren

Motherwell had an outside hope for top-six, but they knew they would most likely need to beat St Mirren and the two games that followed.

The Paisley side have proved to be a tough nut to crack for the Steelmen this season, with the ‘Well not registered a goal against them.

A positive start to the game seen Theo Bair and Georgie Gent have glimpses of an opener, but it would the visitors who got in front first thanks to Marcus Fraser header.

It looked like a similar predicament Motherwell found themselves in, but despite going behind, they rallied. Bair eventually levelled the game, bundling the ball over the line to make it 12 goals for the season.

The result leaves Motherwell six points off the top-six, with only two games left before the split.

  • Women

    Motherwell 3-0 Aberdeen

    Motherwell 3-0 Aberdeen

A comfortable afternoon in East Kilbride saw the women of steel continue their impressive run of form, as Motherwell coasted past closest league rivals Aberdeen to narrow the gap to the top of the split at a sun swept K-Park.

Morgan Cross netted her third consecutive goal after latching onto Louisa Boyes’ pinpoint through ball before calmly dispatching a low strike beyond the reach of the Dons stopper. Laura Berry doubled the hosts advantage midway through the first-half after a clever interchange of play fell kindly to the striker within the opposition penalty area, and the youngster coolly slotted an unstoppable effort into the back of the net.

The Rangers loanee secured her brace and the three points shortly after the hour mark, prodding home the rebound from Brooke Nunn’s initial strike. The hosts secure their third consecutive victory after defeating Spartans and Hamilton, racking up 11-goals and conceding only once.

Head Coach Paul Brownlie made two changes from the side that earned their second Lanarkshire derby victory against Hamilton over a fortnight ago, with Murron Cunningham returning to the core of the Motherwell backline, as Laura berry also returned to the starting XI following a spell with Scotland U17s.

Looking to reverse the script that saw Aberdeen overcome the women of steel twice this season, Motherwell started firmly on the front foot, finding space in-behind the visiting backline and testing the Dons goal within the opening phases of play.

Motherwell’s early persistence was soon rewarded, with breakthrough coming after only five minutes. Louisa Boyes skilfully worked her way through the Aberdeen half before threading a perfectly-weighted through ball to the feet of Cross, who shifted the ball onto her stringer right-foot before slotting a precise effort under the approaching Dons stopper.

Katie Rice almost doubled the hosts advantage moments later after expertly escaping her marker before clipping an audacious effort from over 30-yards out, but the midfielders dangerous attempt curled agonisingly wide of the top-right corner.

As the first-half progressed, Motherwell strengthened their foothold in the game. A clever interchange of play on the left fell kindly to Brooke Nunn on the edge of the Aberdeen penalty area and the wingers low delivery sliced across the visiting box, with Berry capitalising at the back post with an accurate finish.

As the second-half resumed, Motherwell picked up from where they left off, with Berry netting her second of the game. Nunn continued to threaten the Dons backline with her unpredictable turn of pace and the experienced midfielders drilled strike was brilliantly parried clear by the Aberdeen keeper, but Berry reacted first to prod home the rebound.

Motherwell move three points behind the Dons in the league table, with both sides set to meet only once more this season in the Granite city. The women of steel will return to action in a fortnights time to face Dundee united at Fir Park.
