As we enter the final three games, manager Michael Wimmer has praised the connection that has been built between the fans and club.

After nine games in charge, Wimmer boasts a record of four wins and two defeats. In that time, only four sides have collected more points.

Last week against Dundee, the team were greeted by a group of supporters off the bus at Fir Park to celebrate securing Scottish top-flight football for the 41st consecutive season.

“It’s always a good moment if you come back and fans are happy,” Michael Wimmer said at Thursday’s press conference.

“We’re also proud to get out of the coach, and the fans are waiting. It shows that we’re going in the right direction. I’m very happy.

“It’s very important at smaller clubs to have a togetherness. The fans, team and management. If you work hard together and fight and speak but stay together, it’s good. If we finish the season as strong as possible, we will have energy we can bring to pre-season.

“It’s clear what we need. I now understand the expectations from the fans, and now I’m better prepared for next season.”

Paul McGinn will remain at Fir Park until the end of the 2025/26 season.

Having been named club captain at the start of the 2024/25 season, game time has been limited in the last 12 months. The defender sustained a serious injury during pre-season, ruling him out for crucial weeks before the competitive action started.

He returned to the action at the end of July and made nine appearances before suffering another injury setback. McGinn is now fully fit and looking forward to the 2025/26 campaign.

“This season has been disappointing from a personal perspective given the injury setbacks,” McGinn said.

“Missing a large portion of pre-season had a big impact on my season as a whole, but the club and all the staff have looked after me, and I’m feeling great at present.

“The plan now is to repay them for their trust and effort in getting me back fit by getting a good pre-season under my belt. The support we’ve had throughout the season from all the supporters has been incredible, and I want to personally thank them for their continued support.

“The squad are wanting to finish the season as strongly as possible ahead of the new campaign.”

McGinn is closing in on the 100-game mark for the club, which has allowed manager Michael Wimmer to look at the captain’s impact here over recent seasons.

“Paul and I have had lots of chats since I arrived,” Wimmer added.

“He is a great guy and a top professional. I may not have seen him play since I’ve been here, but I’ve watched lots of videos of him in action. There is no doubt in my mind that he will improve the team by being in it.

“Paul is a very important figure in the dressing room and has lots of experience. We will need that going forward.”

Aston Oxborough was pleased to given his first start since January at the weekend against Dundee. Oxborough has been pleased with his contribution pre-injury but is now fully focused going into the remaining games. 

The Motherwell number one has clarity having signed a new deal earlier in the season, which allows him to focus on the football.

Michael Wimmer was pleased to secure Motherwell’s Premiership status last weekend against Dundee, but believes motivation will not be low for the players going into the final three games of the season. 

The Motherwell boss has been pleased with the connection he has built with the supporters so far, and believes it will be hugely important that that remains intact going into next season.

Lennon Miller has been nominated for yet another award, this time for the SFWA Young Player of the Year award. 

Having already won the Motherwell Player of the Year, Young Player of the Year and Coaches’ Player of the Year, he also picked up the PFA Young Player of the Year award at the start of May.

Miller has now been nominated alongside Bobby Wales, David Watson and James Wilson for the Scottish Football Writers’ Association Young Player of the Year award.

James McFadden picked up this award in the 2001/02 season, with David Turnbull being next Motherwell starlet to win it in 2019. Max Johnston became the third player to win it 2023, with Lennon Miller now aiming to becoming the fourth Motherwell Academy Graduate to win it this year.

Fresh from a week without competitive midweek action, Motherwell will seek to build upon a disappointing series of strong performances that unfortunately secured no points. 

The women of steel were defeated in the Scottish Cup Semi-Final by nine-time champions Glasgow City before enduring successive defeats to league leaders Hibernian and Rangers, as a week of relentless competitive action taking its toll in the latter stages of the game at Broadwood Stadium.

Paul Brownlie’s side will seek to replicate their previous performance over Hearts in East Kilbride, with Motherwell dominating much of the 90-minutes – earning a goalless draw at K-Park.

Motherwell head to K-Park, ready to earn their first top-six points of the season, after a well-earned week of rest follows a demanding week of three successive matches on the road.

Paul Brownlie’s side started brightly against title-chasers Rangers, trailing by one-goal at the break, but the fatigue of the previous two matches clearly impacted in the second-half, as Rangers netted five-goals in the latter stages to compile an unreflective scoreline at full-time.

The women of steel will be without midfielder Brodie Greenwood, as the Scottish youth international remains unavailable to play against their parent club.

Hearts 

The Jambos will be focused on returning to a winning run of form spll after a frustrating defeat to their fierce Edinburgh rivals Hibernian at the Oriam last weekend.

Callum Slattery is your G4 Claims player of the month for April. 

The box-to-box midfielder has returned to action with a bang, scoring five goals since returning in January. April was another successful month for Slattery, as he scored the leveller against St Johnstone, making him the joint-top goalscorer at the time.

Against Hearts and Kilmarnock, he also continued to be a threat in the middle of the pitch, as he looked to provide the creative spark for the side.

Motherwell’s Fortunes

Motherwell ensured they would be playing top-flight thanks to a last-gasp 2-1 win over Dundee last Saturday. Tom Sparrow and Tawanda Maswanhise both reach six goals for the season, and both are currently the joint top goalscorers for the season.

That result meant it was back-to-back wins for Michael Wimmer, who will be without Johnny Koutroumbis this weekend, due to the Aussie seeing red in the second-half at Dens Park.

Motherwell are in pole position to finish seventh at present but will face stiff competition from Hearts in the final three matches. With only two points separating both teams, the winner of Saturday’s match will fancy their chances at finishing seventh.

These two sides met only a couple of weeks ago in the final round of fixtures before the split. With both sides looking to finish in the top-six, the match ended 0-0, and both sides were left disappointed at missing out on the top-six. Hearts won the match in January in a narrow 1-0 win, with the Steelmen winning the first match between the sides earlier in the season 3-1.

Opposition Report

Neil Critchley departed his role as manager at the end of April following a 1-0 defeat to Dundee. Liam Fox has taken interim charge and got a tune out of the squad in his first match, winning 3-1 against The Staggies.

That result all but assures Hearts will be nowhere near the relegation playoff spot come the end of the campaign and keeps them two points behind Motherwell with three games to go.

Lawrence Shankland has had a quieter season by his standards but notched two goals in the most recent win against Ross County in the Highlands. That took his tally up to seven for the season, but January signing Elton Kabangu is the Jambos’ current top scorer with eight for the season.

Motherwell were on the cusp of securing their Premiership status for the 2025/26 season when they travelled to Dundee, but when the hosts found the back of the net in the first-half, the task was made more difficult.

When Dundee stunned the Steelmen with a second on the stroke of half-time, the game looked like it could have gotten away. VAR intervened to correctly rule the goal for offside in the build-up, and the deficit would remain at one.

Tawanda Maswanhise would be introduced into the action during the interval, and his impact was almost immediate. With Motherwell in the ascendancy, Tom Sparrow levelled the game and put Dundee firmly on the back foot.

Johnny Koutroumbis was given his marching orders, however, with ten minutes remaining, which could have put the spark out for Michael Wimmer’s side. However, it didn’t slow them down. Dan Casey’s header came off the bar, and Ewan Wilson watched the keeper save his effort. It was beginning to look like it wouldn’t be their day and the point would be a good result.

But in the dying moments, Dom Thompson flighted a high cross ball into the area, and Maswanhise leaped highest and powered a header home, sparking wild celebrations. With Hearts winning, Motherwell had guaranteed their spot in the Premiership next season. Their 41st consecutive season is Scotland’s Premier Division.

It was a tough end to an exhausting week of football for the women of steel, who clearly tired against their full-time counterparts in the latter stages, as Rangers racked up a scoreline not reflective of the 90-minutes.  

Paul Brownlie named five changes from the side that were narrowly defeated by league leaders Hibernian at Meadowbank on Wednesday evening. Rebecca Cameron replaced Emily Mutch in the Motherwell goal, with Rachel Todd, Lucy Barclay, Lucy Ronald and Chelsie Watson all named in the starting XI. Watson captained the side, with Inglis sidelined with injury. Rangers loanees Sophie Black and Eilidh Austin remained unavailable to play against their parent club.

Motherwell started brightly and contested a closely-fought opening 45-minutes of football, as the women of steel repelled the majority of Rangers’ attacks, and limited the hosts to few enticing opportunities on the Motherwell goal. Following an intense week of Scottish Cup Semi-Final action, and a midweek visit to league leaders Hibernian – the minutes clearly took its toll in the second-half, as Rangers capitalised, racking up several late goals, distorting the deserved scoreline. Striker Katie Wilkinson hit Motherwell for five, with Mia McAulay converting the other solitary goal.

The women of steel headed into the break one-goal behind, after Wilkinson capitalised on an unfortunate deflection that fell kindly into her path, drilling home her strike from close-range. The fatigue clearly started to show its effect, as the second-half progressed, with a delivery across the face of goal evading countless claret and amber jerseys before being dispatched by McAulay at the back post.

Wilkinson narrowly beat Cameron with her right-footed penalty kick for the hosts third, as the Scottish shot stopper got a touch, but couldn’t claw Wilkinson’s strike clear of the target.

Wilkinson netted a fourth with less than 10-minutes remaining before netting twice in the final two-minutes to compile a scoreline that doesn’t completely reflect the entire 90-minutes.

Motherwell will return to action next weekend, when they welcome visitors Hearts to K-Park.
