Matchday seven of the 2025/26 SWPL campaign awaits the women of steel this weekend, as they are back in South Lanarkshire for the second consecutive game to face Aberdeen at K-Park. 

Motherwell will be focused on redemption after conceding a late equaliser to Partick Thistle last weekend, and visitors Aberdeen lay ahead, with both sides seeking their second victory of the 2025/26 SWPL campaign.

Motherwell sit level on points with the Dons, but remain one-place ahead, with a slightly stronger goal difference.

Motherwell return to East Kilbride for the second matchday in a row after being held to a point against Partick Thistle last weekend. Striker Carla Boyce coolly slotted home the opener from the penalty spot after Bailley Collins was hauled down following an aerial dual inside the Thistle box, but Mya Bates’ late equaliser rescued a point for the Jags.

The women of steel will be keen to separate themselves from the Dons in the SWPL table before a week-long hiatus in Premier League action when attention turns to the Sky Sports Cup the following weekend.

Paul Brownlie’s side head into the weekend, with almost a full squad, as defender Jenna Penman remains the only unavailable player following her shoulder injury sustained in the opening matchday of the season.

Aberdeen

The Dons remain second bottom of the SWPL table, ahead of only Hamilton Accies, who have yet to pick up their first points of the season. Their sole victory came in a narrow 2-1 victory over Montrose.

Jens Berthel Askou provided an update on the playing squad ahead of Saturday’s match against Aberdeen at Fir Park. 

“We’ll finalise the squad on Friday,” Jens Berthel Askou said.

“Not a lot of changes; we’re still working on getting players fit. Good progress. Paul McGinn is doing great; we’ll see if that’s too early.

“Some of the guys who have been out for a while, and who will still be out for a while, Filip [Stuparevic] and Zach [Robinson], are doing great. They’re starting to run more.

“Elijah [Just] is doing better, Tom [Sparrow] and so on. Everything is going in the right direction. But for now, I don’t expect a lot of changes to the squad on Saturday.”

Players and staff at Motherwell Football Club’s youth academy are working with North Lanarkshire Child Protection Committee to raise awareness about what we can all do to help keep North Lanarkshire’s children and young people safe.

We can all play our part by helping to make our communities safe, nurturing places for children to grow up in. Listening to what children say to us, being alert to concerns and taking their worries seriously helps children and young people feel valued and respected and encourages them to speak up if they don’t feel safe.

The long-established partnership sees the youth academy continue to back the child protection message by displaying the Child Protection Committee logo on their tops throughout the season.

The club will also display prominent child protection messages around Fir Park, as well as information on how to report concerns. Motherwell FC will also promote important child protection messages through their social media and digital channels.

“We are delighted to continue our partnership between our academy and the Child Protection Committee,” Commercial Director Suzanne Reid at Motherwell FC said.

“Our particular focus this year will be on keeping children safe online, especially in social media, where we know our children and young people can be at risk of bullying, abuse and exploitation.

“Our academy players and coaches will work to spread the message of internet safety across our local area.”

Protecting our children from harm is everyone’s responsibility,” Chair of the North Lanarkshire Child Protection Committee Judith Tait added

“We want our communities to take an active role in protecting children and promoting their rights to live safe and happy lives.

“We want to make sure that everyone understands how to help children stay safe online, what to look out for and is confident that they know what to do if they are worried about the safety or wellbeing of a child or young person.

“Working with the academy at Motherwell Football Club, we can extend the reach of our message amongst those who might not otherwise hear it.”

Our Premier Sports Cup semi-final match against St Mirren will take place on Saturday 1 November. 

Kick off is 5:30pm.

Ticket prices have also been confirmed.

The club are running supporters buses from Fir Park to Hampden. The price is £20 per person. Buses will leave Fir Park at 4pm, with the Cooper Stand open from 1pm for refreshments.

Motherwell take on Aberdeen for the second time in a week on Saturday 27 September at Fir Park.

The Cooper Suite opens for home and away fans at 3:30pm. Food and drink is available, with the suite remaining open for one hour after the match also.

The Beer Garden will open at 3:30pm, and will be available for home fans only.

The Motherwell FC DSA are collecting money at the match via bucket collection.

Motherwell’s Fortunes

Motherwell made it back-to-back Premier Sports Cup semi-final appearances on Saturday, with a hard-fought but impressive win over Aberdeen at Pittodrie.

Regan Charles-Cook netted his first Motherwell goal since joining late in the summer window and will be looking to follow up again this weekend.

The last time these two sides faced off at Fir Park was when goals from Tawanda Maswanhise and Ewan Wilson secured a deserved 2-0 win over the Dons in January.

Opposition Report

Aberdeen have made a slow start to the Premiership campaign as they hunt down their first victory of the league campaign. A Scottish Cup win was the perfect end to the 2024/25 season, and with a number of new reinforcements, Jimmy Thelin will be looking to get their first league win of the season.

That first league win may come prior to their visit to Fir Park, however. The Dons are in action on Tuesday night against Dundee United at Tannadice.

Motherwell B make the trip to Stranraer on Tuesday 23 September as they continue their KDM Evolution Trophy campaign.

Motherwell made the long journey north to Aberdeen in the quarter-final of the Premier Sports Cup. The Steelmen were one match away from making it to back-to-back semi-finals in the competition.

And the excitement was high in the build-up, with over 1100 Motherwell fans travelling to Pittodrie in the hope of another special day.

The first-half was jam-packed with big chances for Jens Berthel Askou’s side, with Regan Charles-Cook, Tawanda Maswanhise, Stephen O’Donnell and Ibrahim Said all having big chances.

But nobody could find the breakthrough, and as the game entered into the final 30 minutes, the pocket of Well fans were jubilant as they watched Charles-Cook’s effort curl off the post and into the net.

Despite Aberdeen throwing everything at getting a goal back, it was to be Motherwell’s day, sparking elation and joy after the full-time whistle.

A transpired to be an evening of mixed emotions for the women of steel, as Patrick Thistle struck in the final stages of the game to rescue a point at K-Park on Sunday. 

Head Coach Paul Brownlie made two changes from the side that were defeated in the Scottish capital last weekend. Amy Bulloch and Sophie Black both earned a place in midfield, with Shannon Leishman and Mason Clark settling for a place on the bench. 

Carla Boyce opened the scoring from the penalty spot, drilling home into the bottom-right corner from 12-yards before Mya Bates’ mis-directed cross drifted into the top-corner of the Motherwell goal.

Keen to earn their first victory over the Jags for over five years, Motherwell started firmly on the front foot, and were rewarded a penalty midway through the first-half after Bailley Collins received a stray arm across her face a yard into the Thistle penalty area. Despite the Thistle defence pleading their case, the referee stuck to her original decision. Boyce stepped up and coolly slotted her strike into the bottom-right corner.

Motherwell continued their dominance on the Thistle goal as the second-half progressed, with Collins finding space frequently across the right-flank, but the pinpoint delivery into the six-yard-box continued to evade the women of steel.

Thistle struggled to produce many clear-cut opportunities on goal, and their eventual equaliser reflected that. Thistle progressed across the left touchline, and Mya Bates lofted a hopeful cross into the Motherwell penalty area, but the midfielders looping delivery sailed over the head of Cameron before finding the side netting.

Motherwell tried to rally response in the final stages, but were forced to settle for a point in a frustrating, but encouraging afternoon in East Kilbride.
