Motherwell’s Fortunes

Motherwell registered their first league win of the season on Saturday night against Aberdeen. That result extended Motherwell’s unbeaten run to 14 matches, their best run since 1952.

Jens Berthel Askou remains unbeaten in competitive matches as Motherwell manager. Apostolos Stamatelopoulos found the back of the net for the first time in the league last time out, as the Australian targets further goals.

The Steelmen last visited Parkhead on Boxing Day last year, with Brendan Rodgers’ side running out comfortable 4-0 victors. But Motherwell have had positive results in the East End of Glasgow in recent years, Jon Obika’s late goal earned his side a point in a 1-1 draw back in November 2023, with the Steelmen also drawing 1-1 earlier that year in April.

Opposition Report

Despite unrest amongst supporters, Celtic have been largely picking up positive results on the pitch. They remain unbeaten in domestic competitions this season, but the elimination from the Champions League has left a dampener on proceedings.

Celtic have drew their last two matches, Hibernian in the league and Crvena zvezda in the Europa League. Benjamin Nygren arrived over the summer and has three goals to his name already this season.

The Champions are in action on Thursday night in the Europa League, taking on Braga in Glasgow.

Elijah Just has been named in the New Zealand squad for their October matches. 

Just, a regular in the national side, will travel with his teammates to Europe for two friendly matches.

The Kiwis line up against Poland on Thursday 9 October and will play Norway on Tuesday 14 October. These matches will stand New Zealand in good stead having qualified for the 2026 World Cup earlier in the year, and can utilise these fixtures to prepare ahead of the finals next summer.

After getting one over Aberdeen last weekend in the Granite City, and advancing to the Premier Sports Cup semi-final, Jens Berthel Askou and his Motherwell side were facing the same opposition again this weekend but on home turf.

Aberdeen, who had been searching for their first win and goal of the league season, travelled down to North Lanarkshire and started brightly in the game.

In wet conditions, neither side could convert their chances for the vast majority of the game. But despite the lack of goals, the home crowd remained loud and proud, acting as the 12th man.

Fighting until the very end, stoppage time would bring about ample drama, resulting in Motherwell getting over the line to secure their first league win of the season.

Motherwell comfortably coasted to their second victory of the season, matching the men’s first-team result by overcoming Aberdeen for the second time this weekend. 

Head Coach Paul Brownlie made two changes from the side that were held to a point by Partick Thistle last weekend. Defender Shannon Leishman returned to the starting XI alongside Orla Burn, with Gill Inglis and Kodie Hay settling for a place on the bench. 

Motherwell’s high-press caused the visitors problems from the outset, with Carla Boyce repeatedly closing down Aberdeen’s attempt to build from the back.

After several close encounters in the backline, the opening goal soon followed. Carla Boyce sharply closed down the Aberdeen defence, earning possession midway through the Dons penalty box before accurately converting from close-range.

The second followed soon after, as Katie Rice’s floated delivery sailed invitingly into the Aberdeen six-yard-box, and Tegan Browning expertly escaped her marker before bulleting home a header from a few yards out.

Defender Katie Rice had to be forced off, as the players regrouped in the second-half, with the defender receiving a strong head knock shortly before the break.

Motherwell continued their dominance in the second-half, repelling much of Aberdeen’s counter-attacking play. Substitute Mason Clark came close to teeing up the third, after creating space on the right-flank before drilling a low delivery across the face of goal, but the women of steel couldn’t convert.

Motherwell will head to the Scottish capital next weekend full of confidence, as they face defending SWPL champions Hibernian in the next round of the Sky Sports Cup.

The manager gives his views on a late win over Aberdeen.

Motherwell faced Aberdeen for the second time in a week on Saturday night at Fir Park, with Jens Berthel Askou picking up his first league victory as Motherwell boss. 

Two injury-time goals from Australian pair Johnny Koutroumbis and Apostolos Stamatelopoulos gave Motherwell a deserved first league win of the season and extended their unbeaten run to 12 games.

For the first time since his arrival in the summer, the Motherwell manager named an unchanged 11. All nine substitutes remained the same as the previous weekend to match.

That meant a home start for Stephen Welsh and last week’s goal hero, Regan Charles-Cook.

Backed by their loyal and noisy following, Aberdeen could have been ahead within the first minute when Calum Ward was forced to palm Kevin Nisbet’s powerful header from eight yards over the bar.

Although ‘Well quickly resumed their short passing game, both teams had difficulty dealing with longer balls on the wet and slick surface.

Midway through the half, a steady build-up released Tawanda Maswanhise, but his ball across the six-yard box was taken at the second attempt by Dimitar Mitov as Charles-Cook lay waiting behind the ‘keeper.

Following a water break in the rain after 35 minutes, Ward had to act smartly to push Jesper Karlson’s shot away from goal.

With ‘Well content to probe for an opening and never really threatening Mitov’s goal in the first half, former ‘Well defender Nicky Devlin was denied the opener at the other end when his header was nodded off the line by Elliot Watt.

There was a bit more pressure on the Dons’ goal at the start of the second half, and after 62 minutes Mitov produced a brilliant save to deny the Steelmen the opening goal. A quick break on the right allowed Ibrahim Said to whip the ball into the penalty box. Although it fell behind Apostolos Stamatelopoulos, the striker took a touch before hooking the ball towards goal only to see the ‘keeper racing from his line to block his goal-bound effort.

That sparked some much-needed life into the game as both sides chased three points.

With 73 minutes played, Well’s first change saw Johnny Koutroumbis replace Stephen O’Donnell after another impressive shift from the former Scotland.

Five minutes later another chance came the way of Stamatelopoulos. A fortunate rebound sent the ball towards the six-yard box, but the Australian’s well-measured header drifted beyond the post.

Motherwell looked the more likely to score as the game moved into the final five minutes, and Esapa Osong replaced Charles-Cook.

Despite having the better of the second half, though, the Fir Park men seemed to be heading for yet another draw until two minutes into added-on time.

Koutroumbis cut into the box on the left, and although his low shot lacked power, it squirmed out of the hands of the grounded Mitov and over the line to give ‘Well the lead.

Intent on playing out the last few minutes of the game, Jens Berthel Askou sent on Andy Halliday and Kofi Balmer.

However, in a dramatic ending, ‘Well doubled their lead in the 96th minute. Osong’s determination carried him into the Dons’ box before he was fouled, although it took a VAR check to confirm it was a penalty. That allowed Stamatelopoulos to hammer home his first league goal of the season from 12 yards as the players rushed to celebrate with the striker, and the ‘Well fans enjoyed a late, late show.

Stephen Welsh has enjoyed his start at Motherwell, and believes the team produced a strong performance against Aberdeen last weekend. The Celtic loanee believes Aberdeen’s position in the league table isn’t quite a true reflection of the team they are, and is confident that this weekend’s match will be nothing short of a tough challenge. 

Welsh also discusses his recent spell in Belgium and having a head start on the style of play here at Motherwell from what he learned coming through at Celtic.

Motherwell boss Jens Berthel Askou was delighted that his side booked their spot in the semi-final of the Premier Sports Cup against Aberdeen last weekend, but has put that achievement firmly to the back of his mind ahead of their second match against the Dons in the space of a week this weekend. 

Despite playing the same opponent back-to-back, the manager believes the match could play out in a completely different fashion, with both sides looking for improvement compared to last weekend’s match.

Matchday seven of the 2025/26 SWPL campaign awaits the women of steel this weekend, as they are back in South Lanarkshire for the second consecutive game to face Aberdeen at K-Park. 

Motherwell will be focused on redemption after conceding a late equaliser to Partick Thistle last weekend, and visitors Aberdeen lay ahead, with both sides seeking their second victory of the 2025/26 SWPL campaign.

Motherwell sit level on points with the Dons, but remain one-place ahead, with a slightly stronger goal difference.

Motherwell return to East Kilbride for the second matchday in a row after being held to a point against Partick Thistle last weekend. Striker Carla Boyce coolly slotted home the opener from the penalty spot after Bailley Collins was hauled down following an aerial dual inside the Thistle box, but Mya Bates’ late equaliser rescued a point for the Jags.

The women of steel will be keen to separate themselves from the Dons in the SWPL table before a week-long hiatus in Premier League action when attention turns to the Sky Sports Cup the following weekend.

Paul Brownlie’s side head into the weekend, with almost a full squad, as defender Jenna Penman remains the only unavailable player following her shoulder injury sustained in the opening matchday of the season.

Aberdeen

The Dons remain second bottom of the SWPL table, ahead of only Hamilton Accies, who have yet to pick up their first points of the season. Their sole victory came in a narrow 2-1 victory over Montrose.

Jens Berthel Askou provided an update on the playing squad ahead of Saturday’s match against Aberdeen at Fir Park. 

“We’ll finalise the squad on Friday,” Jens Berthel Askou said.

“Not a lot of changes; we’re still working on getting players fit. Good progress. Paul McGinn is doing great; we’ll see if that’s too early.

“Some of the guys who have been out for a while, and who will still be out for a while, Filip [Stuparevic] and Zach [Robinson], are doing great. They’re starting to run more.

“Elijah [Just] is doing better, Tom [Sparrow] and so on. Everything is going in the right direction. But for now, I don’t expect a lot of changes to the squad on Saturday.”
