    October International Review

    October International Review

We had two players representing their nations during the October international break, let’s find out how they got on.

    Regan Charles-Cook

Regan Charles-Cook was not involved in Grenada’s first match against the British Virgin Islands, due to a delayed arrival to the camp. Grenada won the match 4-1 in his absence.

In the second match against Cuba, Charles-Cook was named in the starting 11. The winger contributed two assists in a 2-0 win for the Spice Boys.

    Tawanda Maswanhise

Tawanda Maswanhise was named on the bench for Zimbabwe’s game against South Africa. He entered the action on the hour-mark but the hosts couldn’t find a way past the Group’s second placed team and the match ended goalless.

Maswanhise never featured in the Warriors second match, against Lestotho, due to a passport issue.

    Celtic 7-1 Motherwell

    Celtic 7-1 Motherwell

Motherwell’s league Cup woes persisted in South Lanarkshire, as title-chasers Celtic comprehensively overpowered the women of steel in an afternoon to forget at New Douglas Park.

Celtic comfortably swept the women of steel aside to seal a commanding 7-1 victory in Ml3, with former Motherwell talisman Morgan Cross netting twice alongside teammate Saoirse Noonan who completed a brace. Emma Lawton, Kelly Clark and Maria McAneny added to the tally to compound Motherwell’s recent frustrations.

Head Coach Paul Brownlie made a few changes from the side from the side that were knocked out of the Sky Sports League Cup last weekend. Rebecca Cameron maintained her place in goal, while experienced defender Shannon Leishman returned to the starting line-up alongside Amy Bulloch and Lucy Ronald who partnered in the midfield. Academy graduate Hannah Cairns made her first league start whilst fellow youth prospects Teoni Steele, Lia Young and Lily McAvoy were named on the bench.

Celtic’s high-intensity press immediately put the Motherwell defence under pressure in the early stages. Cameron was called into action twice in the opening 15 minutes, making a series of key saves to maintain Motherwell’s foothold in the game. Motherwell tried to find their rhythm, but Celtic’s intensity persisted.

The opener came in the 26th minute, as Cross capitalised on the high defensive line, sneaking through into the Motherwell final third before rounding the goalkeeper, and slotting home from close-range. Cameron pulled off another strong save to maintain the scorelinee, but Celtic soon doubled their advantage through Saoirse Noonan. A whipped corner across the face of goal was pounced on by Lawton, whose glancing header ricocheted off the crossbar before falling to the feet of Noonan, who drilled home the second.

Just before half-time, Emma Lawton added a third in almost identical circumstances, ensuring an assured 3–0 lead at the break.

Motherwell came out after the restart looking for a response, and got a glimmer of hope just after the hour mark. A low ball into the box was inadvertently turned into her own net by Claire Walsh, citing Motherwell a potential lifeline.

Motherwell’s optimism proved to be short-lived, as Celtic kept their foot on the gas and added four more goals before the final whistle, rounding off a clinical performance.

Despite the scoreline, there were certainly positives to take for Motherwell, who will have to dust themselves down, and reflect on a disappointing afternoon in Hamilton.

Motherwell must focus on regrouping ahead of next weekend, as the challenges don’t come any easier, as they face defending champions Hibernian in front of the home crowd at K-Park.

    Motherwell’s Fortunes

Motherwell came up just short against Champions Celtic last time, conceding a goal in stoppage-time which consigned the Steelmen to their first league defeat of the season, and Jens Berthel Askou’s first competitive defeat at the club.

But Apostolos Stamatelopoulos found the back of the net twice last time out, making it three goals in two games for the frontman.

Elijah Just, Callum Slattery, Callum Hendry and Tom Sparrow are all nearing their return to action, with captain Paul McGinn coming back into the team a fortnight ago against Celtic.

The last competitive meeting between these two sides was back in 2010 at Fir Park, when a single Ryan Flynn goal secured all three points for the visitors. The Steelmen’s last victory over Falkirk was in October 2009 when Lukas Jutkiewicz found the back of the net in a 1-0 win.

    Opposition Report

Falkirk earned a point against Rangers in their last game before the October international break.

Dylan Tait is the current top goalscorer for the side on five goals, and their are some familiar faces amongst the Falkirk ranks with former Motherwell men Alfie Agyeman and Ross McIver currently there.

John McGlynn’s side have three draws and one win in their opening seven league matches this season.

    Next up: Celtic (A)

    Next up: Celtic (A)

Matchday eight of the 2025/26 SWPL campaign awaits the women of steel this weekend, as they travel across Lanarkshire to face Celtic at New Douglas Park.

The women of steel will have their eyes set on redemption after enduring a heavy defeat to Hibernian in the second round of the Sky Sports Cup.

Motherwell sit sixth in the SWPL table, three-points ahead of Aberdeen in the relegation playoff-spot.

    The Tale of the Tape

    Motherwell

Last weekends 9-0 defeat in the Scottish capital left the women of steel with much to reflect on, as they return to competitive action this weekend.

Motherwell will be keen to separate themselves from the sides sitting towards the bottom of the league. Paul Brownlie’s side could move 10-points clear of Hamilton at the foot of the Premier League table if they secure their first-ever victory over the Glasgow-side.

Full focus will be on kickstarting Motherwell’s away form, as the women of steel have yet to pick up a point on the road after defeats to Glasgow City, Rangers and Hearts.

    Celtic

The Celts remain unbeaten in their last four competitive outings, sealing their place in the third round of the Sky Sports Cup last weekend after defeating Spartans by three-goals to one. Elena Sadiku’s side sit third in the SWPL table, three points behind closest rivals Rangers and Glasgow City, who remain locked on 19-points at the top of the table.

    March of the Day

    March of the Day

Former Scotland football heroes have joined an ex-player with MND on the 150-mile March of The Day to raise funds to help tackle the disease.

A FORMER footballer living with motor neuron disease will join some of Scottish football’s best-known former players in a 150-mile charity walk this weekend to raise funds for research into the devastating neurological condition.

Ex-Scotland internationals John McGinlay and Andy Walker will join a team of former professionals and supporters for the Scottish March of the Day, a three-day challenge that will see participants walk from Motherwell’s Fir Park to Murrayfield Stadium in Edinburgh, visiting 22 football grounds along the way.

The event – which runs from 10 to 12 October – is inspired by footballers Marcus Stewart and Stephen Darby, both diagnosed with MND, and held in memory of rugby legend Doddie Weir OBE, who died with the disease in 2022. The team hopes to raise £50,000 to be shared between the Darby Rimmer MND Foundation and My Name’5 Doddie Foundation.

Among those taking part is Martin Johnston, the former Cove Rangers, Peterhead, Brechin City and Elgin City player who was diagnosed with MND seven years ago. The 32-strong group of walkers and support crew will complete the route in rotation, supported by a network of clubs, fans and local organisations along the way.

Starting at Fir Park in Motherwell, the walk will include stops at Hampden Park, Ibrox, Celtic Park, St Mirren, Falkirk, Hibernian and Heart of Midlothian before finishing at Murrayfield’s Oor Doddie statue. A pipe band and civic send-off are planned for the opening leg.

The event is backed by PFA Scotland and Portal Security Ltd, with logistical support from Redwood Events, the charity events team behind previous March of the Day walks in England. The SPFL Trust has coordinated links with clubs across the route, while the Scottish Football Supporters Association and more than 40 companies have lent support or sponsorship.

Former Liverpool and Bradford City defender Stephen Darby, who co-founded the Darby Rimmer MND Foundation after his own diagnosis in 2018, said the event had already received overwhelming backing.

He said: “March of the Day events have brought together people, fans and football clubs in an incredible way. Each one raises awareness of MND as well as vital funds for grants and research. The support we’ve had from across Scotland has been unbelievable.

“When those of us living with MND see people walking, fundraising and standing with us, it gives us strength to keep fighting. Together, we can make a real impact – and hopefully one day find a cure.”

Paul Thompson, Director of Fundraising and Communications at the My Name’5 Doddie Foundation, said the walk would be ‘more than just a long trek’.

He said: “It’s a powerful way to shine a spotlight on MND and the urgent need for new treatments. It’s tough, it’s ambitious, and it’s powered by passion. Every step helps fund the research that will bring us closer to treatments, and our ultimate aim, a world free of MND.”

The list of participants includes former professionals Nathan Clarke and Filipe Morais, both former teammates of Darby at Bradford City, as well as Stuart Barlow, the ex-Everton striker whose mother died from MND.

Several of Johnston’s former teammates – Kevin Tindal, Mark Perry, Jamie Lennox, Barry Thompson, and Andy Gibson – are also joining the challenge in support of their friend.

More than a dozen football clubs and community trusts, including Motherwell FC Community Trust, Cove Rangers, Aberdeen FC Community Trust, Montrose Community Trust, Spartans FC, and Ross County FC, are sponsoring or welcoming the walkers as they pass through.

The foundations involved have raised millions for MND research and support. Since its creation in 2017, My Name’5 Doddie Foundation has committed almost £20m to research, while the Darby Rimmer MND Foundation provides grants, awareness and emotional support for those living with the condition.

Redwood Events, founded by Mike Wilson and Steve Wood, has raised more than £1.6 million for charities through sporting challenges over the past 17 years.

The Scottish March of the Day will conclude at Murrayfield on October 12, with players, supporters and families expected to gather at the finish line to honour those who have inspired the campaign.

Motherwell FC Community Trust were delighted to donate £250 to the cause.

Donations can be made via the team’s fundraising page: donate.giveasyoulive.com/fundraising/smotd-core-team.
