Matchday nine of the 2025/26 SWPL campaign awaits the women of steel this weekend, as they return to South Lanarkshire to face defending SWPL champions Hibernian at K-Park. 

The women of steel will be firmly focused on mounting the desired response against Hibernian after enduring a heavy defeat to Hibernian in the second round of the Sky Sports Cup almost a fortnight ago.

Motherwell remain sixth in the SWPL table, cut nine-points adrift from the top-five, whilst remaining level on points with Aberdeen in seventh.

Last weekends disappointing 7-1 defeat to Celtic failed to dispel the building frustrations amongst the squad after leaving the Scottish capital with a 9-0 defeat the previous weekend.

The women of steel have had much to reflect on over the past week, as they prepare to return to competitive action this weekend, with the squad nearing full strength, as Lily Boyce, Orla Burn, and Julia Gorska return from international duty with the Scotland under-17 squad. 

Motherwell will be keen to separate themselves from the sides sitting towards the bottom of the league, and re-establish their foothold in the final place of the top-six. Paul Brownlie’s side could move three-points clear of Aberdeen, and 10-points clear of Hamilton at the bottom of the SWPL table if they can secure their first victory over Hibernian since a 2-3 victory away at Meadowbank in 2023.

Hibernian

The Hibees have continued their quest to restore their SWPL crown, defeating title-rivals Rangers at Meadowbank last weekend to continue their five-game unbeaten run. They head to K-Park, with victory in their sights to close down their five-point gap to Glasgow City at the top of the SWPL table.

The Aussie midfielder believes the squad are raring to get the season back underway following the small break for international football.

Jens Berthel Askou provided a positive injury update on Callum Slattery, Elijah Just, Callum Hendry and Tom Sparrow ahead this weekend’s match against Falkirk. 

Despite the atmosphere already building ahead of the upcoming semi-final match against St Mirren, the Motherwell manager is keen to emphasise that the team are only focused on the next game, and that mindset won’t change.

Aaron Thomson has been named in the Scotland Under 17 squad.

The young Scots have three matches as they aim to qualify for EURO Under 17 Championship. Scotland play all three games at the Excelsior Stadium.

They kick off the action against England on 28 October, before taking on Sweden on 31 October. Their final match is against Lithuania on 3 November.

Following the October international break, Jens Berthel Askou is preparing to welcome back up to three players from injury for the match against Falkirk. 

Speaking at the press conference on Thursday afternoon, the Motherwell manager provided an update on those returning.

“We’ve had Elijah [Just], Tom Sparrow and Callum Hendry back in full training since Monday,” Jens Berthel Askou said.

“They’re looking really good, and it’s fantastic for the group to have them back. They all look eager and hungry.

“Callum Slattery will be in full training next week. Good times.

“It certainly lifts the edge in training. They’re extremely eager to show they want to play, and we have more competition.”

Stephen Welsh also comes back into contention, having missed the previous match against his parent club, Celtic.

Tickets are going on sale to season tickets holder first. If you wish to buy, ONCE YOU HAVE THE HAMPDEN PARK TICKETS APP, you can purchase online by clicking here.

There are NO paper tickets. Everything is digital.

There are NO limits to how many you can buy.

Step 3 – Get Ready for Matchday

Once you have the Hampden Park tickets app and have purchased your ticket via the Motherwell FC online ticketing platform, your ticket will show up in the Hampden App.

The QR code will go live on the morning of the game.

We strongly recommend you open and load your ticket at home before leaving for the match as this will save inconvenience at the turnstiles.

Using the Hampden Tickets App 

• Download the App (phones only, not tablets).
• Register with your ticket email. Accept terms. Allow Bluetooth/contacts if you want to transfer tickets easily.
• Verify – a 6-digit code will be emailed to you every time you log in.
• Find your tickets – they’ll appear in “My Tickets” (the week of the game, or within minutes if you buy last-minute).
• See match details – seat, entry info, stadium maps are under each ticket.
• Transfer tickets – hit “Transfer,” enter the person’s email, and send. They’ll need the app too.

Hospitality areas will open at 12 noon, buses leave at 4pm prompt and hospitality guests can return to Fir Park following the match where a pay bar will be in operation.

Supporters Buses

We have limited spaces available on our supporters buses from Fir Park to Hampden. The price is £20 per person. Buses will leave Fir Park at 4pm, with the Cooper Stand and Cooper Bar open from 12 for refreshments.

Supporters can enjoy live entertainment from singers Jamie Keenan and Callum Brand in addition to free face painting. Food and drink will be available from the kiosks in the Cooper stand before the match.

We had two players representing their nations during the October international break, let’s find out how they got on.

Regan Charles-Cook

Regan Charles-Cook was not involved in Grenada’s first match against the British Virgin Islands, due to a delayed arrival to the camp. Grenada won the match 4-1 in his absence.

In the second match against Cuba, Charles-Cook was named in the starting 11. The winger contributed two assists in a 2-0 win for the Spice Boys.

Tawanda Maswanhise

Tawanda Maswanhise was named on the bench for Zimbabwe’s game against South Africa. He entered the action on the hour-mark but the hosts couldn’t find a way past the Group’s second placed team and the match ended goalless.

Maswanhise never featured in the Warriors second match, against Lestotho, due to a passport issue.

Our game against Hibernian, due to be played on Saturday 1 November, will now take place on Tuesday 25 November at 7.45pm.

The game has been moved due to our Premier Sports Cup semi-final with St Mirren.

This now means November looks like the following:

Motherwell’s league Cup woes persisted in South Lanarkshire, as title-chasers Celtic comprehensively overpowered the women of steel in an afternoon to forget at New Douglas Park. 

Celtic comfortably swept the women of steel aside to seal a commanding 7-1 victory in Ml3, with former Motherwell talisman Morgan Cross netting twice alongside teammate Saoirse Noonan who completed a brace. Emma Lawton, Kelly Clark and Maria McAneny added to the tally to compound Motherwell’s recent frustrations.

Head Coach Paul Brownlie made a few changes from the side from the side that were knocked out of the Sky Sports League Cup last weekend. Rebecca Cameron maintained her place in goal, while experienced defender Shannon Leishman returned to the starting line-up alongside Amy Bulloch and Lucy Ronald who partnered in the midfield. Academy graduate Hannah Cairns made her first league start whilst fellow youth prospects Teoni Steele, Lia Young and Lily McAvoy were named on the bench.

Celtic’s high-intensity press immediately put the Motherwell defence under pressure in the early stages. Cameron was called into action twice in the opening 15 minutes, making a series of key saves to maintain Motherwell’s foothold in the game. Motherwell tried to find their rhythm, but Celtic’s intensity persisted.

The opener came in the 26th minute, as Cross capitalised on the high defensive line, sneaking through into the Motherwell final third before rounding the goalkeeper, and slotting home from close-range. Cameron pulled off another strong save to maintain the scorelinee, but Celtic soon doubled their advantage through Saoirse Noonan. A whipped corner across the face of goal was pounced on by Lawton, whose glancing header ricocheted off the crossbar before falling to the feet of Noonan, who drilled home the second.

Just before half-time, Emma Lawton added a third in almost identical circumstances, ensuring an assured 3–0 lead at the break.

Motherwell came out after the restart looking for a response, and got a glimmer of hope just after the hour mark. A low ball into the box was inadvertently turned into her own net by Claire Walsh, citing Motherwell a potential lifeline.

Motherwell’s optimism proved to be short-lived, as Celtic kept their foot on the gas and added four more goals before the final whistle, rounding off a clinical performance.

Despite the scoreline, there were certainly positives to take for Motherwell, who will have to dust themselves down, and reflect on a disappointing afternoon in Hamilton.

Motherwell must focus on regrouping ahead of next weekend, as the challenges don’t come any easier, as they face defending champions Hibernian in front of the home crowd at K-Park.
