Motherwell’s Fortunes

The Steelmen remain unbeaten in the William Hill Premiership following their dramatic 3-3 draw with St Mirren on Sunday afternoon. Tawanda Maswanhise got off the mark in the league following his Golden Boot victory last season, with Regan Charles-Cook netting his third in ten matches this season.

Jardell Kanga announced himself to the Motherwell faithful with a stunning volley in stoppage-time on his debut to rescue a point at the death. Eythor Bjørgolfsson got his first minutes of the season, with the Norwegian introduced in the second-half.

Motherwell have a win and two draws in their first three league matches this season, with the Steelmen unbeaten in their last five matches at home against United, winning all five.

Opposition Report

Since Jim Goodwin’s appointment as Dundee United Manager on the 1st March 2023, it’s been a bit of a rollercoaster journey. Taking the reins at a difficult time for the Tannadice outfit, United were relegated to the second tier at the end of the 2022/23 season.

A lot of managers would have left the post at this point, but Goodwin agreed to become permanent manager at the end of that campaign and the work started immediately to bring his side back to the top-tier. And that’s exactly what he achieved, securing promotion and the Championship league title at the first time of asking.

Back amongst Scotland’s best clubs, Dundee United then secured European football in 2024/25 season and were well clear of any relegations fears last season.

And it’s been another busy summer for Goodwin and his recruitment team. There’s been 12 new faces joining the ranks, including current joint top scorer Lachlan Rose who arrived from Newcastle Jets and made an instant impact, scoring against Rangers on matchday one in the Scottish Premiership.

There has been some significant outgoings however also. Vicko Sevelj moved to Azerbaijan a fee this week as his two-year stay in Scotland was brought to a close, with the likes of Craig Sibbald, Johnny Russell and Ryan Strain all moving on also. There remains significant interest in full-back Will Ferry also, as a number of clubs circle to secure his signature before the deadline.

Dundee United fans are hoping for their team to be knocking on the door of the top-six come the split in April, but tonight they arrive at Fir Park, a ground that United have struggled to pick up results of late.

In the last five outings in North Lanarkshire, Motherwell have won all five games which included a last-minute winner in the Premier Sports Cup quarter-final back in 2024.

But United will be brimming with confidence coming into this match. Although missing their manager on Saturday, the players produced a 4-0 win on the road at Kilmarnock to secure their first win of the season. Having qualified from the group-stage of the Premier Sports Cup, United were knocked out by holders Celtic 4-0 at Tannadice.

The start to the season may look mixed, but expectation is high in Dundee United camp as they travel here tonight looking for their first win at Fir Park since April 2023.

Motherwell secured their first points of the 2026/27 Scottish Power Women’s Premier League in scintillating fashion – dispatching three past hosts Montrose at Links Park on Sunday. 

Top goalscorer Carla Boyce continued to add to her tally, converting the opener shortly before the half-time break, with Sophie Rutherford doubling the advantage directly from the restart.

Lucy Ronald made it three on the hour mark, with former Motherwell striker Kaela McDonald-Nguah striking home a late consolation for the hosts from the penalty spot.

Head Coach Iain Robinson named a slightly altered side from the one that suffered defeat to Hearts last weekend. Rebecca Cameron started in goal, with Leah Sidey, Chelsie Watson, Ellie MacDonald and Shannon Leishman completing the back four.

Mary Stanić-Floody made her first Motherwell start in midfield, partnering Lucy Ronald, Eva Thomson and Sophie Rutherford, with Carla Boyce and Mason Clark leading the line.

Motherwell started firmly on the front foot and were the first to test the Montrose shot-stopper. Motherwell worked the ball confidently into the Montrose penalty area before teeing up Boyce at the centre of the box, but the striker couldn’t apply the finishing touches, as Lauren Perry parried clear.

Rutherford soon stung the palms of the Montrose keeper, drilling a right-footed strike from the edge of the box, but Perry again reacted sharply to parry over the crossbar.

Motherwell’s efforts were finally rewarded five minutes from the break. Ellie MacDonald whipped a dangerous delivery across the face of goal, and Boyce rose highest to power home a magnificent header.

Stunned and disorganised following the goal, Motherwell pounced on the hosts from the restart. Motherwell drive sharply through the thirds before finding Rutherford at the edge of the area, and the summer addition struck confidently into the bottom-right corner.

On the hour mark, Motherwell made it three. Chelsie Watson’s deep delivery found Ronald lurking at the back post, and the midfielder accurately prodded home her header from close range.

Montrose pulled one back in the latter stages of the game. Chelsie Watson was adjudged to have handled the ball, leaving the referee no alternative but to award a spot-kick. McDonald-Nguah stepped up and coolly slotted the ball past Rebecca Cameron to narrow the deficit.

Despite the late strike, Motherwell stood firm to secure their first points of the season.

Motherwell and St Mirren played out a thrilling 3-3 draw in Paisley on Sunday afternoon, as both sides put on a show for the 5,000 fans inside the stadium. 

The visitors raced into a 2-0 lead thanks to goals from Tawanda Maswanhise and Regan Charles-Cook, with the former also missing a spot kick. But St Mirren showed their fight and turned the game on its head with Paul Nsio, Declan John and Samuel Ramos all scoring in a nine-minute period to swing the game back into Saints’ favour before the interval.

Craig McLeish’s side looked set to pick up their third league win in a row before Jardell Kanga popped up in stoppage-time to dramatically volley home a leveller on his debut.

Following their exit in the UEFA Conference League on Thursday night, Alfred Johansson opted for three changes to his starting 11. Martin Moormann returned to the team after he missed the second leg against Freiburg through suspension, with Tom Sparrow also returning to the starting 11.

Charles-Cook returned to the team also in place of Seb Palmer-Houlden, with new signing Kanga slotted straight onto the bench after he completed his move on Friday.

And the changes seemed to have the desired effect, as Motherwell started the match with a bang. Inside two minutes, Alex Lowry threaded a perfectly judged ball into the channel for Maswanhise to spring onto. Goalkeeper Jacob Chapman came out of his goal to shut down the angle, but the Zimbabwean international cruised passed him before rolling into an empty net.

With the perfect start to proceedings, the hosts seemingly couldn’t cope with a fired-up Motherwell frontline, who were causing the backline all sorts of problems. But then, Alex Gogic created his own issues for his side.

A pass across the defensive line was somewhat overhit, and the Cypriot tried to bring the ball down using his shoulder and chest but misjudged the action and looked to have controlled the ball with his arm. Inside the area, strong, strong claims from the Motherwell players followed, but Kevin Clancy opted to play on, despite the decision looking nailed on. VAR halted play, and once Clancy rewatched the incident, he didn’t hesitate to point to the spot.

Maswanhise strolled up to the spot before kissing the ball and placing it down. Having netted one spot kick already this season against HJK Helsinki, he couldn’t beat the keeper on this occasion, and Charles-Cook was unable to get a shot away on the follow-up. VAR began to check the penalty, and despite Gogic arriving in the box well prior to Maswanhise connecting with the ball, the game continued and the chance went missing.

The Steelmen could have had the wind taken out of them following the disappointment, but the opposite appeared to be true, and they remained firmly on the front foot. Henry Fieldson was caught lagging on the ball, with Maswanhise robbing the defender of possession. He charged forward and tried to reverse a shot with his left foot into the bottom corner, but the ball went wide of the mark.

But four minutes on, Motherwell did have their deserved second. When the ball fell to Charles-Cook on the edge of the box, the Grenadian lined up a strike that whipped straight into the top corner, leaving Chapman with no chance and St Mirren with a mountain to climb.

But climb it they did, with the comeback starting after 39 minutes. Ramos found a neat pass into Agrafiotis, with Lukas Fadinger going down under the challenge, but the ball fell kindly into Nsio’s path, and the midfielder made no mistake, curling a fine finish past Alex Paulsen.

With momentum turning in St Mirren’s favour, they made it count five minutes later when they equalised. Maswanhise was tackled under John, with the St Mirren full-back starting and ending the attacking move. A series of nice passes between the St Mirren players led to John being fed the ball on the left-hand side before finishing past Paulsen.

An action-packed first-half wasn’t finished yet, as the hosts would complete the comeback in stoppage-time. Calvin Ramsay’s free-kick made its way to Ramos, who was unmarked at the back-post area, and he was able to beat Paulsen to spark celebrations in three of the stands in the stadium.

Johansson brought on Stephen O’Donnell at the half-time break, in place of Sparrow as Motherwell looked to get themselves back in the game. Emmanuel Longelo was a constant threat on the left-hand side, with Motherwell becoming used to his creative spark on the wing, and the full-back was unfortunate to see his strike hit the side netting after bursting forward.

Palmer-Houlden was able to latch onto a through ball, but the St Mirren defence was able to recover just in time before the former Dundee man could finish. At the other end, Paulsen produced a number of impressive stops to keep the deficit at just one.

The New Zealand international was able to keep former Motherwell man Eseosa Sule’s effort out, with Jayden Richardson also denied by the keeper. Motherwell continued to push for the leveller, and the introduction of Kanga and Eythor Bjørgolfsson added a different dynamic to Motherwell’s attack.

Lowry went so close to the equaliser with five minutes to go, but Chapman was able to get a fingertip onto the strike to put it over the bar for a corner.

The latter got onto the end of Longelo’s corner but couldn’t keep his header on target. But the big moment came when Jake Young raced clean through on Paulsen’s net, but the keeper was able to keep the forward’s effort out with his feet and kept Motherwell’s glimmer of hope alive.

And in fairytale fashion, Kanga’s big moment arrived on his first appearance. Lowry’s corner was punched clear by Chapman and fell to the Swede on the right-edge of the box; he somehow managed to get his foot over the ball at height to smash into the top corner past three defenders and the keeper. The perfect introduction and a deserved point for Motherwell, as they now look ahead to more Premiership action against Dundee United on Wednesday night.

An opportunity to change their fortunes awaits the women of steel this weekend, as matchday three welcomes the opportunity to conclude their pointless opening to the 2026/27 Scottish Power Women’s Premier League against Montrose at Links Park. 

Motherwell’s impressive performances in the Sky Sports League Cup Group Stage have failed to materialise in the SPWPL, as Hibernian racked up seven unanswered goals on the opening weekend, with Hearts cruised to a commanding five-nil victory. 

Iain Robinson’s side must now return to Montrose seeking redemption following their defeat to the Gable Endies in the Sky Sports League Cup Group Stage. 

The Tale of the Tape

Motherwell 

The women of steel’s frustrating start to the SPWPL campaign has continued to mount pressure on the squad this weekend, as Motherwell seek to put their first point on the board. 

Facing defending champions, Hearts, and recently dethroned champions, Hibernian on the opening two weekend’s of the season has prevented Motherwell from building early signs of momentum, with Iain Robinson’s side yet to find the target. Meanwhile, 12-goals have been conceded at the other end, leaving Motherwell at the foot of the table. 

The challenges won’t come any easier for the women of steel, as they travel North to face Montrose, who sealed a 1-3 victory at the Bumblebee Stadium last month. 

Montrose

The Gable Endies will likewise have the impetus to kickstart their domestic campaign following successive defeats to Rangers and Celtic. 

Despite their tough start to the league campaign, Montrose remained unbeaten the Sky Sports League Cup group stage, with four successive victories. 

Montrose scored 25-goals across the four-ties, conceding only three against Hamilton, St. Johnstone, falkirk, and Motherwell.

It wasn’t to be in the UEFA Conference League for Motherwell, and despite exiting the competition 7-2 on aggregate to SC Freiburg, Alfred Johansson and his players done the club proud over the two legs. 

A moment from Emmanuel Longelo that will live long in the memory of the 1,400 fans who made the journey to Germany was just part of the story of this European journey that has seen the club go from Faroe Islands, to Finland and finally, to Germany.

And now we turn our focus back to the William Hill Premiership, as we push closer to the first international break of the season.

Motherwell’s Fortunes

Motherwell play a Premiership match for the first time since the 0-0 draw with Falkirk at Fir Park five games ago. Emmanuel Longelo scored his tenth Motherwell goal against SC Freiburg on Thursday night, as the Steelmen lost out 4-1 on the night.

But there was more positive news on the injury front. Stephen O’Donnell was once again available, Tom Sparrow returned from his spell on the sidelines and Dylan Williams played his first minutes since Torshavn.

Apostolos Stamatelopoulos and Eythor Bjørgolfsson were also on the bench, as Alfred Johansson’s options continue to improve across the pitch.

Opposition Report

St Mirren have been very active in the summer window, recruiting ten new additions since the window opened. One of those new faces is former Motherwell Eseosa Sule, who has helped his new side achieve two wins from two to start the Premiership season.

Killian Phillips has scored all three goals for the Buddies so far in the Premiership, which has attracted plenty interest in Scotland and abroad as a number of clubs look to secure his signature.

Jardell Kanga has arrived from Ilves for an undisclosed fee on a three-year deal, with the club holding the option of a further year.

The 20-year-old makes the move from the Finnish top-flight club.

“Jardell is a player I have followed closely for a number of years,” Alfred Johansson stated.

“When Jardell was playing youth football, there were a number of occasions I tried to bring him into my team, but circumstances meant this didn’t happen. I have admired his ability for years, and I’m so pleased I’ll finally be able to work with him.

“He arrives in Scotland with a lot of attention for what he has achieved already in football, but I know in our environment, we can help him develop and grow further. As ever, we look forward to Jardell settling in with his new teammates and showing his quality.”

Kanga has been widely regarded as one of the hottest prospects to come out of Sweden, bursting onto the professional football stage with a bang. A product of the IF Brommapojkarna Academy in the Swedish capital, he became their youngest-ever player in 2021 when he featured in a first-team match, having shown an abundance of excitement, maturity and professionalism at the age of just 15.

But this debut was part of a wider success story for Kanga. At the age of just 15, he went on to play 23 games in the Swedish third division, scoring five goals in just under 1000 minutes played and starting 11 games. His performances helped his team achieve promotion to the second-tier of Swedish football, but Kanga caught wide-spread attention and subsequently joined Bayer Leverkusen.

Further media spotlight was put on Kanga in 2022, when he was named amongst the Guardian’s top 60 players to look out for born in 2005. Jardell’s name was placed alongside Desiré Doué, now of PSG, Mathys Tel of Tottenham Hotspur, Antonia Nusa of RB Leipzig and Arda Güler of Real Madrid.

Continuing his development with Bayer Leverkusen’s Under 17 and Under 19 sides, he joined De Graafschap on loan before returning to Sweden with Hammarby in 2024, signing a four-year contract with the Swedish outfit.

Across his almost two seasons with Ilves, Kanga has played 68 games for the Finns, scoring 18 goals and assisting 16 times. His maturity has been shown, having been given the captain’s armband on a number of occasions for matches.

Kanga continues to progress internationally also. He has played for the Swedish youth sides all the way up to the Under 21 level, where he made his debut last year.

“I’m glad this deal is complete and I can get started,” Jardell Kanga said.

“I know the manager, and this move makes a lot of sense for me. The style of play is perfect, the group of players are friendly and talented, and the club is ambitious. I watched the European games and have watched some of the other matches this season, so I know where I’ll want to be in this system.

“Our full focus is on the league now, and Sunday can’t come quick enough.”

He might not be due to arrive for another few months, but Santa is still coming to town in December and we want you to be prepared.
